Killing Simon Webb Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 43 ratings

When his marriage unravels, Simon Webb leaves his high-flying City job and moves to Berlin to run a fund managing the wealth of mega-Rich Russians. A revival of his childhood fascination with the old Berlin of Cold War espionage entangles him in a story in which Vladimir Putin seems to have been involved and which appears to have potentially serious ramifications in the present time.
In Berlin Simon meets an elusive woman with a body to die for, a complex past and a mysterious present. Among her circle of “friends” are computer hackers, individuals with far-right agendas and one loner who shares Simon’s interest in Cold War spies.
On the surface, Simon’s new life in Germany is care free and good. But gradually he is caught up in another world: a world of deep fakes, Russian assassins, far-right extremism, and terrorists using artificial intelligence to pilot a drone attack in an urban street. A rogue video game surfaces from the dark web and emerges into the real world.
Before long Simon is on the run, fleeing for his life.

I am reliably told that I was born in Nigeria in 1952. I don’t, of course, have any memory of that and, over the years, I have come to suspect that such memories as I do have of a warm African childhood are drawn from second-hand stories rather than from the five senses of personal experience. They are no less vivid for that.

By the time I started school, I was living in a moderately large house in a leafy street in a well-ordered Surrey suburb. From there, five or six grey mornings a week, my father and thousands like him set off by train for their offices in London. It was never entirely clear to me what he did there. My mother tended a rose garden that became famous among our neighbours and, on the side, collected carved wooden masks from West Africa. There I remained, apart from two blissful teenage years in Geneva, until I went up to Oxford.

Oxford, ably aided and abetted by a long-legged German girlfriend and two summers in Greece, opened my eyes to a world of women and radical left-wing politics. After university I taught English in Paris for two years, travelled in South America for another year and then returned to London without any intention of settling down. Yet, despite my best intentions, there I stayed. There I married, had children, divorced, married again and had more children. There, for more than thirty years, I worked as an investment banker, as a management consultant and as a “civil servant”. It wasn’t nearly as boring as it might sound. Some of the work was actually totally absorbing. Some of it is still subject to the Official Secrets Act.

I retired from the City in 2010. I sold up in London (and Devon) and moved to Switzerland to live in an old wooden house with a glorious view over lake and mountain and to embrace postponed passions, among them hill walking, skiing and writing.

Simon Webb starts out as a successful financier. But after he moves to Berlin his life takes an unexpected turn and he finds himself the target of a computer game that's slipped from the dark web into real life. This is a page turner from AJ Blake. Like his first novel it brings to life some of the big issues of our times in a clever plot that twists its way from the cold war to the pandemic. In Simon Webb he's created an anti-hero for our times. A great read for those who like reading crime novels, more especially roman noir, or who, like me, just enjoy a very good story.

An entertaining and wide-ranging read, taking in Le Carre-esque spying, investment, hacking, gaming, the rise of the far Right in Europe and religious faith and much in between. The settings are well realised, particularly the parts set in Berlin, where the ghosts of the Cold War are always present.

A thoroughly modern, sexy, well researched espionage thriller.

Having read Dust on the Nettles, I had high expectations for this novel, and it didn't disappoint. I found it to be a page turner: spies, murder, tech and cyber crime, the Dark Web, terrorism, the sex trade, politics (disturbing politics actually, part of what makes the book topical and thought provoking). But there's a heart in the book too – there were times when it moved me.

Overall, the book is intelligently conceived and written. Recommended for readers interested in crime, espionage, politics and the cyber world.

A thoroughly good read. Takes a while to get in to it, as there is simply so much to absorb, but every bit of information pulls you deeper into the slightly terrifying realm where reality and fantasy blend into one. The quality of the writing is superb - the author is at their best when writing from the head and the heart, and is a master of blending fiction and fact.

Not my usual type of book. This story for me hooked from the start. Really good characters with a flowing story that is very well written.

Contemporary setting, plot, politics with a smattering of European history. Enjoyable and well paced.
Webb has money, women and German wine but not answers to questions when bodies turn up.

Just had to finish this intricate story to find out the conclusion. Spies, dark web, etc.etc. in these present times - who knows what to think??!!

A very well written book with an interesting and complex plot. My coffee at Starbucks will never taste the same again.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well written blend of softness and violence

Blake writes well. The story line is a bit complex, so I suggest you keep a written list of the characters and their roles in the plot. It’s satisfying in many ways, though not as neatly resolved as some mystery buffs might like. Nevertheless, a quite worthwhile read!

It was a long complicated story. Written well enough to keep me reading. I definitely loved the character of Masha. I am a Berliner, that's why I bought the book in the first placee. Not my usual reading material.
