About the author

Victor Marie Hugo (/ˈhjuːɡoʊ/; French: [viktɔʁ maʁi yɡo]; 26 February 1802 – 22 May 1885) was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. He is considered one of the greatest and best-known French writers. In France, Hugo's literary fame comes first from his poetry and then from his novels and his dramatic achievements. Among many volumes of poetry, Les Contemplations and La Légende des siècles stand particularly high in critical esteem. Outside France, his best-known works are the novels Les Misérables, 1862, and Notre-Dame de Paris, 1831 (known in English as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame). He also produced more than 4,000 drawings, which have since been admired for their beauty, and earned widespread respect as a campaigner for social causes such as the abolition of capital punishment.
Though a committed royalist when he was young, Hugo's views changed as the decades passed, and he became a passionate supporter of republicanism; his work touches upon most of the political and social issues and the artistic trends of his time. He is buried in the Panthéon. His legacy has been honoured in many ways, including his portrait being placed on French franc banknotes.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 February 2019I've been a devotee of Les Mis the musical for many years and I also appreciated the 2012 film. This January's BBC drama was so good in giving a much fuller background to the characters and story. Encouraged by this I bought a kindle version of the novel. It contains even more detail - for example, The Bishop's story is described in great detail and made him come to life more fully. I'm beginning to develop more understanding and empathy for Javert. Some of the details can be tedious and I chose to skim. It's not going to be a quick read - I'm 14% through in 10 days but it is a very good read. There are passages that are painful to read but I find the whole story uplifting.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 March 2025Beautifully presented copy of a classic.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 January 2015I read this last year and it took me a while to get through. As many have mentioned, a VERY lengthy book with some (possibly) unnecessary discriptions but I actuallly loved this book (if it was not for the length which almost destroyed me, I would have given 5 stars!) It really is worth the read, and I do feel that the length of the story makes you empathise with the journey of Jean Valjean and his struggles. Its a moving story which takes you through the lives of many that interwine and grow together.
I am really glad I stuck with it as it really is a beatiful, timeless story that brings out genuine emotion. Although I can be taken over but characters and feel real emotion, this is (so far) the only book to have made me shed real tears - not from the joy of completing but the conclusion of Jean Valjean's story and the love in this book. I did not even realise I was crying until I was asked if I was ok, that is how engrossed I was with the words.
Dedication and persistance are needed but it is a wonderful journey that I only regret not doing sooner.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 December 2024Bought this for other half who loves Les Miserable.
Not read it myself but the book is well made and arrived no issues, no crinkles or dents in the cover and the gold leafing is without flaw.
Displayed on my bookshelves alongside my books as it looks great
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 December 2024The book looks great. Nice hardback leather bound cover with gold edged pages. It's a Christmas present so I think it will be appreciated more than a normal paperback version.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 June 2013I probably would not have considered buying this if I had not seen and enjoyed the recent film. I chose one of the older translations, as i wanted to retain the 19th century feel of novel. Once I started reading, it was really difficult to put down. Alright some of the language can be archaic, such "hither" "thither" and "whither" instead of here, there and where. But an advantage with reading it on the Kindle is it enables you to access a definition of the word by pressing on it, which worked on most, but not all words.
The novel gives much greater depth and insight to the minor characters, such as Gavroche and the bishop, than the musical has time to portray.
The chapters where the story is diverted to describe historical aspects, such as the battle of Waterloo and the barricades served to demonstrate that France was a country in disarray, still recovering from revolution and warfare. Taking place between 1815 and 1833 it became apparent when reading, that Hugo, writing in 1862 was describing fairly recent history. Rather like modern writers writing about the Cold War.
I can now see why Les Mis is described as a masterpiece.
A comment I would make, is that the particular translation should be made more apparent in the description. I did some background research on the different translations and they appear to be very different. But the Amazon site does not make it simple to identify which translation was used in the different editions.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 November 2013...to steal a quote about Wagner. Other reviewers have pointed out how very long-winded this book is and how irrelevant a lot of its diversions, so I won't labour the point. A thorough understanding of 19th century French history is required for most of the political content, though once Hugo gets going with the action at the barricades during the 1832 insurgency, it is gripping stuff. As other reviewers here, I recommend the reader feels free to skip long sections that appear pointless, as they probably are. However, despite this injunction I must say I was really fascinated by the brief history of the Paris sewers, so some of the diversions are worthwhile! On the other hand, don't bother with the minute-by-minute account of the battle of waterloo or the history of French convents.
Like Dickens, Hugo relies too much on coincidence and sometimes the plot creaks a bit. He does a marvellous job with the characters though, not so much Marius and Cosette who seem to be stereotypes, but the poor inhabitants of Paris, the criminals, street urchins and revolutionaries.
Every now and then there is a flash of wonderful insight into human nature, and his burning sense of social injustice leaps from the page, just as with Dickens. His dialogue does not, however, get close to the quality of Dickens and the characters are not brought to life very well through their speech. This is not helped by some of the choices made by the translator (Isabel Hapgood, a 19th century translator). She obviously felt that it was important at times to show the reader that characters were using 'tu' rather than 'you', but her device - the archaic thee and thou, along with their associated hideous verb constructions ('thou wouldst') - irritated the hell out of me. Most of the romantic twitterings of Marius and Cosette just come off as annoying.
I have never seen the musical Les Miserables (and have no wish to), so I can't say whether this book would suit someone coming from that direction. If you happily read big 19th century novels, this one is probably worth a look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Victor Hugo
This is a timeless work with something to say to every generation especially those living in today's world. For me, it provided background to the storyline in the stage show making that a best seller. You are a star Victor Hugo, maybe the brightest in Javert's signature 'Stars' in the musical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Edição Canterbury Classics - capa de couro

5.0 out of 5 stars ”
