Fallen Out: A Jesse McDermitt Novel (Caribbean Adventure Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
Jesse knows his way around boats and has an old friend in the Florida Keys, living day to day in paradise. Being an experienced diver and angler, Jesse immediately heads south toward the end of the road in Key West, a long dormant dream in his thoughts. With the help of friends, new and old, and a bulging bank account, Jesse finds just the right boat to not only live on, but soon uses to start a “very part-time” charter business. Things go smoothly until a barefoot Carolina girl, a Cat-5 hurricane, and a human trafficker all conspire against him at the same time.
Danger lurks in the sparkling waters off the sleepy little town of Marathon, in the heart of the Florida Keys, as well as in the dark, murky waters of the Everglades. But danger doesn't expect to run into someone like Jesse McDermitt—a man who will not only respond swiftly in facing it, but with overwhelming force.

Wayne Stinnett is a USA Today Bestselling author of more than thirty novels and one non-fiction book on writing. He’s also a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, as is his main character, Jesse McDermitt. Between those careers, Stinnett has worked as a deckhand, commercial fisherman, dive master, taxi driver, construction manager, and truck driver, among many other things. He lives with his wife and youngest daughter in the South Carolina Lowcountry, just a few miles from Parris Island, where he went to boot camp. They also have three grown children, four grandchildren, a crazy Carolina dog, and a large cage full of parakeets. He grew up in Melbourne, Florida, and has also lived in the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, and Cozumel, Mexico.
Stinnett still gets down to Florida regularly, but more often than not, it's via his imagination and writing. All his books are set primarily in the Keys and around the Caribbean. His stories revolve around a retired Marine by the name of Jesse McDermitt, a charter boat Captain who lives on an island in the Middle Keys, where he explores, dives, and fishes the back country of Florida Bay, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Florida Straits. That is until trouble comes looking for him.
You can also follow Stinnett's and Jesse's explorations and adventures on Facebook at "Wayne Stinnett, Author."

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 December 2024I can't recommend this enough. I read it in one sitting - there was no other option. I've seen the Jesse McDermitt novels in my Also Boughts for the past four years and finally found time to check the series out. Now I realise what I've been missing.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 March 2015As a prequel this works well and for anyone new to the series is a good introduction to Jesse’s character. Jesse’s transition from the Marine Corps into the civilian world is authentically told and sets up the rest of his adventures. The drawback of the character development is there is a little less action than I expected, but still enough to keep the pace alive. What I like is that Stinnett doesn’t waste time over-describing surroundings or situations and leaves some of the detail to the reader’s imagination, making it a more personal experience. Fans of the action-adventure genre will definitely approve!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 December 2022I wasn't sure this would be a 'girl's book' but because I love boats and the sea I thought I'd give it a go. Just loved it. Especially enjoyed the accuracy of the geography which made me feel as though i was travelling with Jesse. Great characters, absolutely excellent storyline. I had never read any Wayne Stinnett novels before but am now fired up to read the whole Jesse McDermitt series and then more. Highly recommended read to anyone who enjoys adventure, travel and a good crime story.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 November 2022I bought this since it was put forward as a sort of prequel to the Jesse McDermitt series. It might therefore be of great interest to people who have already started reading the series, but as an introduction to the series it really falls flat.
I notice other reviews pointing out that it's a great travel guide to the Florida Keys, but also how to set up a business with necessary licences, how to buy a boat, how to survive a hurricane and a lot of other useful information if you want to live in the Florida Keys. If you don't, then there's not a lot here for you.
I'm sure that it's probably great for readers who have already read some of the series, providing background information on the protagonist, but as an introduction to the series don't bother. This book did nothing to stimulate my interest in reading any of the books in the series.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 October 2023Good story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Plot
Really enjoyed this well-written short novel set in the Florida Keys. The plot was interesting and fast-paced. Will probably look at other books by the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story. The kind that grabs you and won't let go.
I totally got wrapped up in this story and now will have to get involved with more of the series. The hero is one great guy who's credentials fit the bill. I must say too, that the author has provided great descriptive information in all areas of this book without going overboard; but while still displaying excellent knowledge of all the necessary background. It's encouraging to read an author who's really done their homework. While our recently retired marine hero is somewhat larger than life, that is exactly the ticket needed to make a great series tick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story.
Well crafted with a good plot line. McDermitt probably a little larger than life and while I have known a couple of soldiers like that, McDermitt is more of a montage of a lot of good guys rolled into one. However, the character balances well and is plausible. I like the setting for the book and the associated characters compliment each other well. The thing that I liked about the story was that it unfolded in a natural progression with a sense of reality. I look forward to reading more by this author. If you want a knock down, shoot it out character that is unbelievable then this story is not for you. If you want an honest believable story with a military background then enjoy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthy successor to John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee series - Terrific Read!
I was attracted to the first book and series the moment I saw an ad for it on Instagram. I've never bought a book that I saw an ad for before on Instagram but I'm so glad I did.
The first thing that attracted me was the tropical setting on the cover. The description drew me. Ex-Marine. Boat Captain. Living the good life in the Keys. All this was good enough. The comparisons to the late, great John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee series seemed self-evident. But when I downloaded the sample chapters and breezed through them, I was left wanting more. Bought the book and read it in a day.
It didn't disappoint! I saw from the author's forewords (two of them) that this was written as a prequel to the existing series to help fill in the gaps that readers were always asking about. Well, it works as a great entry point into the series. I liked Gunny McDermitt from the get-go, as well as the colorful cast of characters in that remote neck of the Keys. I also loved the laidback pace of the book, which is filled with necessary and entertaining details about various things, all very relevant to the book and clearly authentic. This character and the "world" he inhabits have a very lived-in feel.
But the story itself is even better. Just the right mix of Florida lifestyle, romance (or should I say, sex, since most Jesse's encounters are fleeting flings, except for one which leaves a sting), the idyllic boat captain life, and the unsavory characters he encounters and how he deals with them when the time comes. When I turned the last page on my Kindle, I didn't hesitate to head over here to leave this review. My next step was to buy the next book. I have a feeling I'm going to be repeating those last two steps several times, so it's great to see that there are already over two dozen books out by Wayne Stinnet in this series alone, as well as bunch of others. Such a great read and such a rare one. Highly recommended.
