4.2 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

This innovative novel has depth, suspense and romance with dark undertones and humour. It crosses several genres. Its developing contemporary story of love and unfolding secrets will intrigue and appeal to a wide readership. Plots intertwine and lives inevitably cross as a tale of subterfuge is gradually revealed. Bradley Warren a time-worn, used car salesman, keeps a low profile concealing his deepest secrets, the least of which is the cadaver in his freezer. He needs to move on, to cover his tracks and has planned for everything - well almost everything, he hadn't counted on meeting Janice. Janice, divorced and vulnerable, back on her feet, needs to be loved and is desperate to find someone to believe in. She falls for Brad, he appears to be perfect, the man she deserves? Mark Collins, ex-vicar now a declared atheist and the new British Prime Minister, has deliberately thrust himself onto the centre stage of international politics, he must keep his secret from the world, the stakes are too high. His outspoken opinions prompt worldwide protests from all faiths whilst his anti-monarchist policies are pushing the renamed British Navy, British Air Force and Army towards rebellion. Is it merely political and religious zeal or does he have another agenda?

Review

"A Time to Deceive by Ronan Farrell combines political drama, romance, history, and science-fiction. Readers who are fans of these genres will love the book " "An irresistible story that was jam-packed with exciting twists and turns........ not only a page turner but also a unique read" "The author is honest, sometimes surprising and sensitive details are revealed which add to the characters' distinctiveness" - 4 out of 4 stars Onlinebookclub.org

The book was extremely well written. Initially the storyline was quite grizzly, but at the same time challenging, interesting and constantly prompting the question - where is this going? One character dominated for quite a while but others were gradually introduced and added further dimensions. Throughout the content reflected the author's extensive knowledge in how he constantly weaved in political, religious, social, scientific viewpoints all combined with a creative and free licence to push the boundaries of thought. A very unexpected finale to the book and one that matched the intrigue right to the end. Amazon reader - Glenys Pashley A plot that twists and turns to keep you engaged, with an unusual outcome that is hinted at along the way if the reader keeps their eyes peeled. Congratulations on this excellent novel: something for everyone! Amazon reader - Eileen Joyce

This book took me by surprise at several points, had I known what it was about it isn't a book I would have chosen. I would have deemed it 'not my kind of thing!' Yet I am glad I have read it, it challenged my own thinking at times and demonstrated a great depth of knowledge in many areas. It was also written in a style which was quite unique. Amazon reader - Ivy Cutler

Ronan Farrell was born in Preston in 1960. He started his career as a Printing Press engineer before joining the Fire and Rescue Service. Now partially retired, he spent the last eight years of his career as an advanced Fire Investigator, working closely with Police and Forensic scientists. Transferring factual report writing skills for Crown and Coroners Court to his first full novel, 'A Time to Deceive', has been an enjoyable experience and natural progression.

Since retiring Ronan has worked on an ad-hoc basis for a funeral director. This was coincidentally wonderful research for what became his opening chapter. It would be lovely to imply that he was dedicated enough to take the work specifically to research the novel, but that would be another deceit!

Ronan has recently published the sequel, 'Don't Look To The Stars'.

3 women, 2 loves and a plot 500 years in the making.

A developing catastrophe follows Brad as he fights for what he believes in, on the cusp of calamity, can he survive whilst attempting to hold on to true love?

Ronan is married to Sue, they have 3 adult sons and three grandchildren. His current interests include; photography, sailing, walking his dogs (a Labrador and an English springer spaniel), foreign travel and spending time with his family.

He is currently researching his third novel.

A fascinating story that took a little while to get into but soon had me fully on board. I enjoyed the way the plot unfolded and slipped almost stealth like into science fiction. The ending was quite surprising and left me hoping for a sequel.

Not my usual genre, but really enjoyed this book. The characters were very believable. Loved the way everything pulled together at the end and nor what I expected. Very well written and with recent news events it became more realistic for me. A great first novel and I am looking forward to Ronan's next book.

Loved the humour although there was also evidence of pathos. Accurate and informative historical research. Great first book.

Yes I enjoyed it the writer had a lot of knowledge about the story. Got to a point where I wanted to know how it ended. It was a surprising finish well worth the read

I wasn’t sure what to make of the story and main character at first, but after chapter one I really began to enjoy the narrative. The hints that there was ‘something more’ going on, that as a reader I was yet to discover, made me keep turning the pages to find out more! The relationship between the two main characters was believable and by completion of the first three chapters I had a really good picture of who they were and what they looked like (and smelled like!). I always find books that give a clear picture of the characters in your mind’s eye the best ones to follow and become involved with. Overall, a well thought out, intriguing storyline with a uniquely troubled pair of main characters to follow on their dark & humorous journey.

Well written and suspenseful, this book has multiple twists that work together. The characters are imperfect making them real to the reader. The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and I can't wait to read the next in series. Enjoy!

The story covers several 'genres' and the final part quite unexpected. This is both an enjoyable read as well as stretching the mind. The characterisation is good and the story builds slowly. Not entirely convinced with the ending though.

I will admit being tempted to discard it out of boredom initially. I am glad I didn’t. Once the author got into the Sci Fi part and history, it became very interesting. The ending was a little abrupt and unsatisfying in reconciling with all the storyline.
