About the author

G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936) was a prolific English journalist and author best known for his mystery series featuring the priest-detective Father Brown and for the metaphysical thriller The Man Who Was Thursday. Baptized into the Church of England, Chesterton underwent a crisis of faith as a young man and became fascinated with the occult. He eventually converted to Roman Catholicism and published some of Christianity's most influential apologetics, including Heretics and Orthodoxy.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 April 2015The Father Brown Mysteries are all very readable in about 20 minutes each which make them ideal for filling in those times when you don't have enough time to concentrate on something with more gravitas. The stories were written mostly before WW1 but still retain relevance as it is logic which drives solving of the mysteries rather than the high tech science which dominates so much of crime writing today.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 September 2016Ordered this collection for my kindle. Great set of Murder Mystery stories. Loving every moment of them. I would certainly recommend them to anyone who loves Murder Mysteries.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 February 2019Father Brown is often complex and elusive , some time the stories seam to end ubruptly , yet start with great depth of setting. They still manage to be interesting and delightful.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 December 2016it is a REAL JOY TO BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE WRITINGS OF BOTH FATHER BROWN AND JOHN BUCHAN
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 August 2014I was looking forward to this being a fan of Christie, Conan Doyle, Charteris, etc., but these are dreadfully dull.
Worse they are predictable, clumsily written and just not very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Supersleuth"
G K Chestertton's "The Father Brown Mysteries" are a marvel, that a man given to serious debate over many things - and a top writer to boot - could compose these amazing light 'detective' stories. Italy's filmmakers have now produced a more modern series called "Don Matteo" (in Italian with English subtitles) also obtainable from Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Would Love To Be Father Brown's Friend
I find myself absolutely loving these stories despite their flaws. I love the character of Father Brown even though he is not perfect. He (or maybe Chesterton) is a bit xenophobic, and is intensely freaked out by any religions that aren't Christianity. Any predominantly Christian country that is not England, he regards with a sort of amused respect, and their residents are portrayed as a mixed bag of simple folk, geniuses, total weirdos, good honest people, loyal friends, and any myriad of good or bad qualities. However, non-Christian people are not treated with the same respect. In one story that I found particularly disturbing, the villains in the case were a vast secret society of Voodoo practitioners, and the members of the religion were all Caribbean people of African descent. I spent two summers living in a place where Voodoo was widely practiced, and many of its practitioners were of African descent, and I found them to be some of the warmest, kindest, most loving people I had ever known. With the experience I've had, this story about Voodoo villains saddened me deeply. In that story, he also rolled repetitions of the "N" word like bowling balls. To a lesser extent, Eastern mystics and Hindus are also regarded with suspicion in these stories. It made me reconsider even reading the book, knowing that I was supporting racist attitudes. In the end, I forgave Chesterton for his ignorant and insensitive portrayal of people and religions he clearly didn't understand. I kept working through the stories, most of which I find delightful. The murderers in the stories are mostly Englishmen, since Father Brown lives primarily in England, and the English people receive almost the same amused treatment that all other nations do in the stories. I love the author's observations about human nature, and the way he develops his characters in a short time with this short story format. As other reviewers had mentioned, not all the stories are of equal quality, but many of them are highly entertaining and a good diversion. In fact, I would say that most of them are good mysteries and they feature a really delightful main character whom I would love to befriend. For the record, I don't feel personally offended by any of Chesterton's amused observations of Americans, women, or non-catholic Christians, so I think there are probably others who also would take it in stride. (Also: I am very, very sensitive.) In the end, I would recommend this book to people who are interested in 1930's mysteries, and who are willing to take the good bits along with the antiquated attitudes of an old-fashioned English gentleman (Chesterton) who is frightened of anyone who is unlike himself.
