Sherlock Holmes : Complete Collection Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 21,089 ratings

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of deductive reasoning (somewhat mistakenly - see inductive reasoning) and astute observation to solve difficult cases. He is arguably the most famous fictional detective ever created, and is one of the best known and most universally recognizable literary characters in any genre.

Product description

From the Back Cover

When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle introduced the world to Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in 1887's A Study in Scarlet, a true icon of literature was born. Since then, their humble address at 221B Baker Street has become almost as famous as the great detective himself, with the incredible popularity of Sherlock Holmes's adventures never wavering over the last 130 years. Bound in a rich, collector's cover, this deluxe and expansive edition, produced in association with The Sherlock Holmes Museum at 221B Baker Street, is the definitive collection for fans of the great detective. It contains all of Conan Doyle's stories - four novels and a colossal 56 short stories - complete and unabridged, encompassing the entirety of the legendary author's Sherlock Holmes work.

About the Author

A prolific and versatile writer, Arthur Conan Doyle has authored detective stories and many historic and scientific romances. However, the world best remembers him as the creator of the legendary detective, Sherlock Holmes and his assistant, Dr. Watson.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and died in 1930. Within those years was crowded a variety of activity and creative work that made him an international figure and inspired the French to give him the epithet 'the good giant'. He was the nephew of 'Dickie Doyle' the artist, and was educated at Stonyhurst, and later studied medicine at Edinburgh University, where the methods of diagnosis of one of the professors provided the idea for the methods of deduction used by Sherlock Holmes.

He set up as a doctor at Southsea and it was while waiting for patients that he began to write. His growing success as an author enabled him to give up his practice and turn his attention to other subjects. He was a passionate advocate of many causes, ranging from divorce law reform and the Channel Tunnel to the issuing of inflatable life-jackets to sailors. He also campaigned to prove the innocence of individuals, and his work on the Edjalji case was instrumental in the introduction of the Court of Criminal Appeal. He was a volunteer physician in the Boer War and later in life became a convert to spiritualism.

His greatest achievement was, of course, his creation of Sherlock Holmes, who soon attained international status and constantly distracted him from his other work; at one time Conan Doyle killed him but was obliged by public protest to restore him to life. And in his creation of Dr Watson, Holmes's companion in adventure and chronicler, Conan Doyle produced not only a perfect foil for Holmes but also one of the most famous narrators in fiction. Penguin publish all the books about the great detective, A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear, His Last Bow, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, The Uncollected Sherlock Holmes and The Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes.

Stunning Book and Brilliant Stories
Received my book today and I absolutely love it! My photo of my cat with the book perfectly sums up my opinion of it as well as giving a rough idea of the size of the book. Firstly, the leather is sturdy and soft embossed with gold and silver which really is beautiful. I also love the inside cover which features a print inspired by important objects from the stories such as a revolver and pocket watch. The gold edging to the paper is lovely too. Will definitely be a show piece on my bookshelf! Now, onto the stories themselves. I was slightly concerned when reading the reviews but I can confirm that there are not any Americanisms in the hardback copy. The test is small but neat and easily read. Have already read A Study in Scarlet and I cannot bring myself to put it down. You truly do get what you pay for and I totally recommend the leather copy of this book! Ordered my copy late evening around 8pm and it arrived 9am the next day! Very efficient service!

I had never read any Sherlock Holmes before, and only knew The Hound of the B., but recently read all the stories after downloading them to my Kindle. Thought I would buy this DVD (at an almost giveaway price at the time) to watch the stories I had just read. Am almost finished now and have really enjoyed the experience. Jeremy Brett is (surely) the ideal Holmes - he obviously enjoyed bringing out the quirkiness of the character and almost 'camps it up' on occasion, with wonderful, subtle comic effect. A set I will doubtless watch again with equal pleasure in the future. One irritation for me though (not enough to lose a star on my rating though, I suppose) is the really dreadful 'in your face' anti-piracy track you are forced to watch every time you load any of the DVDs. I mute it and do something else for a few minutes.. bad miscalculation IMHO - what really is the point of it, who's it going to deter? Anyway, once past that, pure joy...

In the first story in this collection we find Watson meeting Holmes, and sharing 221b Baker Street - to split rental costs. Here Watson describes Holmes as into drugs, narrow-minded, misogynistic, but brilliant at logical deductions.

Conan Doyle's writing is often strongly evocative of time and place - for example, in the first story describing the arid western American desert and its Mormon society. So, mysteries apart, this book is a good read with weightier content than you might expect. Sometimes the stories are very tense and moving, for example in The Scowrers.

There is a sprinkling of typos - and some Americanisms which worry some people, but they did not worry me. Occasionally Conan Doyle shows a negative view of race - for example with references to 'savages'. Times have changed, so I overlook this. But I also found myself fascinated by snippets, for example: "...But the Times is a paper which is seldom found in any hands but those of the highly educated". Well times certainly have changed! So enjoy this delightful read.

Really good book with all of Stories of Sherlock Holmes. Or at least they would all be here if part of mine wasn't missing. It comes towards in the final section "The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes". There are only two stories in my copy and there should be 12 (I think). The only two I have in this copy are The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone and The Problem of Thor Bridge, By my reckoning the following 10 stories missing The Adventure of the Illustrious Client; The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier; The Adventure of the Three Gables; The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire; The Adventure of the Three Garridebs; The Adventure of the Creeping Man; The Adventure of the Lion’s Mane; The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger; The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place and The Adventure of the Retired Colourman. This means that unfortunately, I can only give 3 stars and I might be a little generous at that.

※以下は「The Complete Sherlock Holmes (Illustrated) (Top Five Classics Book 17) (English Edition) 」に対するレビューです。
