About the authors
Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 at Steventon near Basingstoke, the seventh child of the rector of the parish. She lived with her family at Steventon until they moved to Bath when her father retired in 1801. After his death in 1805, she moved around with her mother; in 1809, they settled in Chawton, near Alton, Hampshire. Here she remained, except for a few visits to London, until in May 1817 she moved to Winchester to be near her doctor. There she died on July 18, 1817. As a girl Jane Austen wrote stories, including burlesques of popular romances. Her works were only published after much revision, four novels being published in her lifetime. These are Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma(1816). Two other novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published posthumously in 1818 with a biographical notice by her brother, Henry Austen, the first formal announcement of her authorship. Persuasion was written in a race against failing health in 1815-16. She also left two earlier compositions, a short epistolary novel, Lady Susan, and an unfinished novel, The Watsons. At the time of her death, she was working on a new novel, Sanditon, a fragmentary draft of which survives.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 December 2010I'm a huge Jane Austen fan, but have trouble with my eyes so too much reading, is out of the question. As a result I love Audio Books and these are a gem. With audio books the voice is so important and these readings are perfect. Lovely mellow tones fit beautifully with Austens subtle writing and wit and its just the perfect combination.
Relaxing and so enjoyable, I heartily recommend this product to anyone who loves Jane Austen, and anyone who wants to re-live their childhood by listening to someone reading out loud.
This product would definitely be my choice for taking with me to a deserted Island....

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 May 2013About 50 years ago I studied Jane Austen's Persuasion for English Literature O Level but could not get really very interested in it but I felt that as these books are classics I should really try again and this time I found them absolutely fascinating reading. I am intrigued by the way of life in what is now a bygone era. The etiquette surrounding not only everyday life but the way romances were conducted is so alien to today's society that it makes for the kind of reading where once you have started a book you have great difficulty putting it down until you reach the end. I realize the writing is a bit old fashioned but you find yourself totally absorbed in the web of intrigue.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 September 2013Having only just started on the first story, "Sense and Sensibility," I realised very quickly that whoever input this story - or the proofreader - is either American or just didn't bother to change the default dictionary, since I was irritated early on by the American spellings of "honor," "good-humored" and "neighbor" rather than the English "honour," "good-humoured" and "neighbour." I also winced at irritating errors such as the word "be" where it should obviously have been "he," and so on: a spellchecker wouldn't recognise a problem there, but a proof-reader actually reading the material should have done.
However, I persevered, until finally I came to one sentence which included "in their favor" (American, again), followed in the next sentence by "...she was persuaded that a much smaller provision than 70001. would support her in affluence." Did anyone - I mean a real literate human being - actually proof-read this?
Jane Austen was a world-famous English author whose stories epitomised the social etiquette of the period, and having the smooth flow of her quintessentially English prose intermittently distorted by Americanised spellings and dreadful proofreading so completely destroys the pleasure of reading her books that I can't bear to read any more, and I have deleted the whole collection from my Kindle. I'm going back to the paper versions!
