About the author

F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in St Paul, Minnesota, and went to Princeton University which he left in 1917 to join the army. Fitzgerald was said to have epitomised the Jazz Age, an age inhabited by a generation he defined as 'grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken'.
In 1920 he married Zelda Sayre. Their destructive relationship and her subsequent mental breakdowns became a major influence on his writing. Among his publications were five novels, This Side of Paradise, The Great Gatsby, The Beautiful and Damned, Tender is the Night and The Love of the Last Tycoon (his last and unfinished work): six volumes of short stories and The Crack-Up, a selection of autobiographical pieces.
Fitzgerald died suddenly in 1940. After his death The New York Times said of him that 'He was better than he knew, for in fact and in the literary sense he invented a "generation" ... he might have interpreted them and even guided them, as in their middle years they saw a different and nobler freedom threatened with destruction.'

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 June 2007This review is intentionally very short, as other reviews consider the novel in more detail. It is worth noting that this novel demonstrates Fitzgerald's skill as a writer to the full, and is a pleasure to read.
The purpose of this review is to clarify a point raised in another review, which asks about why this Popular Classics edition appears to present a corrupt, or at least unauthorised text. The reason for this is that it follows the structure of the novel as set out in the 1951 revision, edited by Malcolm Cowley, based on notes and corrections made by Fitzgerald himself. This revision of the original 1934 text rearranges the novel into chronological order, and divides the text into a different number of sections. This is why the Spark Notes referred to by another reviewer are confusing: they describe the 1934 text. It should be noted that, according to the Penguin Modern Classics edition at least, current critical thinking prefers the 1934 edition, as Cowley's interventions in the later edition make it unclear the extent to which Fitzgerald's intentions were followed.
Of course, no exam board would ever bother to be clear as to which text is to be studied: that would be far too easy for us all, wouldn't it?

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 August 2012Really mixed feelings about this one! Was a re-read from approx 20+ years ago, and my memory (hazy) is that I thought WOW at the time. This time, I just didn't actually get it really. Was quite pleased just to get to the end.
Had also recently re-read Gatsby and loved it second time around, so, I suppose my expectations were high for this FSF re-read, and they were dashed. Hate not finishing a book so forced myself through it.
Bit gutted, in all honesty!
PS - Totally agree with another reviewer, the missing odd parts of words etc in the Kindle edition really didn't help!! Grrr.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 November 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI love love love Fitzgerald, he is one of my favourite authors. So when I got my hands on Tender is the night, I couldn't put it down.
The thing with his books is that I always feel like I am part of the story, as if I am an observer watching the characters. Needless to say, I always get upset when I notice I am almost at the end of the book. I won't give away the story here, but it is set between Europe and the US, over the span of a few years.
Regarding the actual book, I was pleased with the aesthetics of it; it's hard back, the pages are fairly heavy and the black and silver cover makes it very elegant.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2013A classic I ought to have read years ago but somehow missed. I ordered it directly after re-reading The Great Gatsby and like that work it is essentially about monied people, mainly Americans, in the heady 1920s - the Jazz Age. Characters come and go on the French Riviera, in Rome and in Switzerland. The main character is the young American psychiatrist David Diver, although we do not immediately learn of his profession.
His wife, it emerges, was one of his patients, in a clinic because she was a victim of incest. Diver has a brief relationship with a young film star and eventually he and his wealthy wife part and he's last heard of in Upper New York State working as a GP. No great tragedies but a little sad
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 January 2013Having previously never read any Fitzgerald, I was recently bowled over by the magnificent Great Gatsby which comes pretty close to Ford Maddox Ford's The Good Soldier for my top spot in early C20th American novels. So I moved on to Tender Is The Night, and was disappointed. There is little of the stylistic flair that had me almost hugging myself with glee in Gatsby, and sections of it border almost on the prosaically dull. But the great complaint is simply the crassness with which it handles its major theme: mental illness.
Of course, it was written at a time when psychoanalysis *was* crass, possessed by Freud's unsubstantiatable fantasies about sexual development and trauma, but that does not stop me wincing at it now. Additionally, whether the causal theories of mental illness of the time were true or not, the depiction of the main mentally ill character (no spoilers from me!), whilst largely sympathetic, is still patronizing and compartmentalizing. Amazon is not the place for a lit-crit style review, but enough to say that the emergence of psychoanalysis had a huge impact on fiction, and I can't help feeling that this novel is just a badly thought through bandwaggon jumper. "Ima write me a book with a nutter in it," says F. Scott, between the whiskies watches his wife's mental collapse, and trawls out a caricature of them both. OK, that's harsh. But I didn't like it, and felt it was crass, lacking credibility, and (surprisingly) really quite dull.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scribner always
Another masterpiece by Fitzgerald. I give you one reason to read it, this quote "I don't ask you to love me always like this, but I ask you to remember. Somewhere inside me there'll always be the person I am to-night." - as for the book itself, I suggest you to buy the Scribner edition always, as it was Fitzgerald's editor and it is the most genuine you can trust. This particular one is a beat cheap in terms of paper quality, I mean it's too thin, but I knew that as I bought the cheap version. As for the rest, all good. Ok size of the letters .
