Emma Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 10,915 ratings

Jane Austen's 'Emma' is a classic novel that explores the life of the protagonist, Emma Woodhouse, a young woman who fancies herself as a matchmaker in her small English village. Published in 1815, the novel is known for its witty dialogue, intricate character development, and satirical look at the class system of the time. Austen's writing style is marked by its irony and social commentary, making 'Emma' a timeless piece of literature that continues to be studied and enjoyed today. The novel is a prime example of the comedy of manners genre, with Austen's keen observations on human behavior shining through in every page. The story follows Emma's attempts at matchmaking, her own romantic missteps, and ultimately her growth and self-realization as a character. It is a charming and insightful read that offers a window into the society of early 19th century England. Jane Austen, known for her sharp wit and keen insight into the human condition, drew inspiration for 'Emma' from her own experiences and observations of the world around her. Austen's own social circle and the rural life she was familiar with greatly influenced the characters and setting of the novel. Her ability to depict the complexities of human relationships and societal norms with humor and depth have solidified her as one of the most respected authors in English literature. 'Emma' is a must-read for anyone interested in classic literature, romance, or social commentary. With its engaging plot, well-developed characters, and timeless themes, this novel continues to captivate readers of all ages.

Marvellous book, poor condition

Marvellous book, poor condition
I’m not sure that it is reasonable to rate a book as very good condition when it is in places is covered in annotation in ink. Much text has been underlined in addition to notes in the margins, some of the underlining is actually through the text. The physical condition of the book is very good, but if there was mention of the annotation, I must’ve missed it. This is not a review of the book itself of course,

Always a great read. Beautifully bound book

This is Jane Austen's fourth novel and one of my favourites. I love the main character, she's self-centred (although not really meaning it) but adorable. Filled with her own self-importance at times but a wonderful daughter and Aunt. I felt like screaming at her and slapping her in most chapters but when the ending is lovely and made me realise just how much I cared about her. A world away from Fanny Price (see my Mansfield Park review here).

Emma is twenty-one, the daughter of an important family in a small town, important to her neighbours but not much farther than that. After playing a small part in the marriage of her governess to a local merchant (or business man, I can't remember), she decides she can play match maker with her friend, Harriet. She fails, gives Harriet rubbish advice and generally makes a hash of it. The rest of the story is about a secret engagement, the plight of her poorer neighbours and some life lessons thrown in. All in all, a thoroughly lovely, escapist kind of book.

The characters are wonderful, I particulary like Miss Bates (played by Sophie Thompson in the Gweneth Paltrow adaptation, which is my favourite). I thought Mr Knightley was a rather school teacherish man and I have a feeling that their relationship may not have been quite equal (I imagine him telling her off like a father rather a lot). But that's what is completely wonderful about this novel, I can imagine how the characters would react outside of the story, I feel like I know them inside out. Well done Jane.

Is the plot as good as Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility? No, I think it's a whisker away from them (I'm a sucker for total romance), but still a great read (although very long).

It's been pointed out to me that I was rather harsh on Fanny Price in my review of Mansfield Park (Oxford World's Classics), and maybe I was. Can I make amends by extolling the virtues of Emma (both the novel and the character)? It's hard to know where to begin, so many and varied are the qualities of this lovely book! This is now my fourth Jane Austen-novel in a row, and to me personally it's probably the one I liked best (though Pride and Prejudice (Oxford World's Classics) is delightful reading too of course, and so is Sense and Sensibility (Oxford World's Classics)).

From page one I was captivated not just by Emma but by all characters, it's amazing how Austen succeeds in making fictional characters come to life: the enchanting but fallible heroine, her father Mr. Woodhouse (at times hilarious), Mr. Knightley, Mrs. Bates, and so on and so forth. They all become very rapidly people you can very well imagine meeting in real life or, stronger still, are convinced to have met in reincarnation. I think that the reason why I like Emma so much is that she is portrayed as very much 'human': apt to make mistakes (all too many one could argue, as another reviewer said I too at times felt like giving Emma a good talking-to) but able to learn from them.

I think this is deservedly a classic, given the fact that it so captivatingly, with just a very limited number of characters and without any grand historical or dramatic events taking place to liven up the plot, draws a timeless portrait of very 'real' people struggling with being in love (or not). My only regret is not having read these novels earlier in life. Have I know become a Janeite? A citizen of the Republic of Pemberley? My wife decidely thinks so ;-)

This is not a review about the book, but about the quality of the product. It’s like newspaper quality (smells like it too) with a cover that looks like it was printed at home on paper you can commonly find at a stationery store. Might have to throw it out after finishing it because it’s so flimsy. Not for keeps.
