- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 May 2024Bought for 39 steps plus two others for 99p
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 November 2022Given the early nature of the book I expected some rather out of date English prose, but this edition went “over the top” ! Very much a “Boys Own” adventure.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 April 2018Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseWhilst some of Buchan's attitudes to other ethnic people can be very suspect, they are borne of their time and I think should be taken that way. The books are entertaining and I have really enjoyed re-reading them. Quite apart from anything else they are a snapshot of a lost and forgotten world with all the customs, mores and taboos that were the norm.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 March 2021John Buchan novels make excellent reading
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 April 2017After the "39 Steps" it droned on a little.
The "39 Steps" film bears very little resemblance to the original story in this book.
Worth reading just to see the differences.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 January 201739 Steps so much better then film. The whole set so atmospheric, tense and full of drama - real edge of the seat stuff. Move over James Bond!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 June 2021Richard Hanney just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Non stop adventure.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseExcellent stories written by an ex Governor General of Canada during the period up to and including the first World War. The book itself is made in the USA which is delightful to see. Nice old stories of a time gone by.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to Read the Original 39 Steps Thriller!!
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe book includes the original story that the great 1939(ish?) film “The 39 Steps” was based on. Great fun to read the original as the screenplay takes great liberties with the details while using the underlying theme!

5.0 out of 5 stars Seminal works
You'll want to own The Richard Hannay Collection offered here, at a bargain price, if for no other reason than it contains Greenmantle and the oh-so-famous The Thirty-Nine Steps. Come back to the wonderful days of yesteryear with a writer who lived then and wrote fresh, suspenseful books. John Buchan's Scottish spy was the author's ticket to immortality through a Hitchcock film of his book. The Richard Hannay Collection – The 39 Steps, Greenmantle and Mr Standfast are the three best Richard Hannay adventures. These books helped create 20th century espionage and intelligence fiction, and the collection includes Mr. Standfast, in which Hannay goes undercover as a pacifist to flush German spies and takes us from memories of the Western Front to Scotland. This edition provides an image gallery, itself a treasure. Seminal works like these should be on everyone's Kindle.
