The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay: An uplifting original and touching romantic comedy: A sunny, funny, story of romance and mystery, guaranteed to warm the cockles of your heart Kindle Edition
Rosa Larkin is down on her luck in London, so when she inherits a near-derelict corner shop in a quaint Devon village, her first thought is to sell it for cash and sort out her life. But nothing is straightforward about this legacy. While the identity of her benefactor remains a mystery, he - or she - has left one important legal proviso: that the shop cannot be sold, only passed on to somebody who really deserves it.
Rosa makes up her mind to give it a go: to put everything she has into getting the shop up and running again in the small seaside community of Cockleberry Bay. But can she do it all on her own? And if not, who will help her succeed - and who among the following will work secretly to see her fail?
There is a handsome rugby player, a sexy plumber, a charlatan reporter and a selection of meddling locals. Add in a hit and run incident and the disappearance of a valuable engraved necklace – and what you get is a journey of self-discovery and unpredictable events.
With surprising and heartfelt results, Rosa, accompanied at all times by her little sausage dog Hot, will slowly unravel the shadowy secrets of the inheritance, and also bring her own, long-hidden heritage into the light.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 January 2023I loved this book, even though it's not my usual genre. I chose it for a Reading Challenge, and I'm glad I did! Rosa is a wonderful character and I loved reading her story of the Corner Shop.
It's such a warm story, with some unexpected twists and turns, some fun and unexpected characters like Titch, and let's not forget Joe...
Great read, lovely and sweet, keeping me reading too late just to find out what happens next!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 February 2021For Rosa, dreams really can come true. To be left a shop in an idyllic village, especially when you are down on your luck. It couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.
What I enjoyed most about this book is that it isn’t all hearts and flowers. Rosa and the other characters are highly realistic and even though fiction, that there are some not so nice people wherever you go. We also have a very modern day take on relationships. I thought it was all a refreshing change. I like that we meet Rosa, a woman in her mid twenties, who isn’t adverse to having relations with people she has just met. We are in the twentieth century folks!
There is a little bit of everything in this story, crime, mystery, romance, friendships. It all makes for a highly enjoyable read. Even though I have just recently lost my own dog, I loved the parts to do with Hot, the sausage dog, and whilst I thought I might find it upsetting, I embraced the wonderful relationship between Hot and Rosa. There is just a wonderful bond and the author got it spot on.
The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay was a wonderful read to escape into. It’s hard not to get caught up in a story set in such an idyllic place, although the downside to small villages is how nosy everyone is and news travels fast! What’s even better is discovering that this is the first book in a series set there and that I don’t have to say goodbye to the characters just yet. A light hearted, feel good read that will leave you with a lovely warm feeling.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 February 2019I bought this book because I'd just read a slew of thrillers and wanted some light relief plus I used to have a village shop - which is what initially caught my attention. I ended up really enjoying it, even though it wasn't quite what I was expecting. The characters are real - I cringed and laughed, at times. Having Hot the dog, as a central character, was also a winner. I've got a bit fed up of the premise of 'Ooh, lucky me, I've just inherited somewhere lovely in the South West' (but that's probably only jealousy!) In this case though, it turned out to be all part of the puzzle/story. I guessed the main bit, well before the end and, as it was a romantic novel there were other obvious swings and roundabouts, but that didn't deter from my enjoyment. I gave this book five stars because I wanted a light but engaging read and it exceeded my expectations. It is always a good sign if you would like to see a second outing with the main characters.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 June 2024Loved this book, captures your imagination from the beginning, well written and not full of unnecessary crap to fill out a book like a lot of books theses days.
I'm looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 March 2019The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay is, essentially, a good story concept; and the opening to the story does capture the reader's attention straight away. The idea of being left a shop and a sum of money to get a business started by an unknown benefactor is beguiling and has so much potential. And throughout the telling of this tale, the writer manages to introduce some genuinely magic touches.
However, generally its development is slightly disappointing, with a great deal of crude, seemingly unnecessary, and less than artistic sexual content which I found detracted from the story. The writer will, no doubt, argue it all goes to the psyche of the heroine of the book, but it is crude and clumsy and detracts from what should be an enjoyable tale. Somehow the more lyrical parts of the story do no sit comfortably with the sexual content. If the writer were to assert this is to make the story 'edgy', I would say the tale of a shop in 'Cockleberry Bay', with the old love story that clings to the history of the shop is not an edgy subject in the first place and cannot be engineered to be so by throwing in a selection of salacious detail along the way.
The other disappointment is the complete lack of editing, which results in a total - and annoying - hotchpotch of pages being justified on the left and, then, the right, and page breaks half way down, and whole pages dedicated to one word, and alternative words that the author couldn't decide on at the time both being left in together, and run-ons of dialogue from one character to another appearing on the same line etc etc. As picky as this might sound, proper editing is essential for the reader's enjoyment of the work and, quite frankly, to publish a manuscript in this state is unforgivably sloppy and unprofessional.
I rated this book 3 stars for the concept and the fact that, overall, it was a reasonably enjoyable tale to read; but proper editorial input would have possibly resulted in a 5-star book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 March 2022This is book one of a four book series.
This book has been on my to be read list for quite some time, I’m glad I waited a bit to read it though now I can read the whole series back to back without having to wait for the next book to come out.
So this has been a lovely funny and entertaining story, wonderful characters and a delightful setting by the beach, oh and a cute little adorable dog by the name of Hot. This book really does have a bit of everything, even that of a little mystery, the conclusion of which I did guess correctly before the big reveal at the very end but despite that it certainly did ruin the story for me in any way. I do love Josh, have quite the soft spot for him and love the friendship between him and Rosa.
Right without further ado, I am heading straight into book two of the series.

”Love is friendship set on fire...”
This book was an absolute pleasure to read... One of the absolute best parts of being a book blogger/reviewer is the exposure you get to so many amazing authors you wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to... this book is a perfect example of that.... I’ve never read anything by Nicola may, But I can guarantee I will take every opportunity offered to read more books from her.... I like my romance with a touch of humor, a lot of fabulous characters, and a beautiful setting.... this book had all that and the added bonus of some mystery....
Rosa has had a tough life, so when she is offered the opportunity to move to Cockleberry Bay and reopen a corner shop... she thinks this might be a perfect opportunity to get her life straight.... The catch... she can’t sell the shop she needs to give it to somebody who is worthy (when it is time) and also she has no idea who has gifted this to her.... Rosa really had a complete transformation throughout this book, it was so lovely to see... she started out with such thick walls around her, you wondered if there was any way she would be happy in a town where everybody knew everything about you.... and she grew into such a charming person with so many wonderful and Corky friends.... she also has the most adorable dog Hot🐾
There is also romance in this book... but you aren’t quite sure who the love interest is until towards the end.... I had my clear favorite, so I don’t really want to describe them because I probably will give it away.... just know there is not a love triangle, and you really want Rosa to make a certain choice (well at least I did).... as I mentioned above there is also some mystery in this book... who gave the corner shop to Rosa? Who was involved in the hit and run accident? And what happened to that necklace?
Strongly recommend to fans of Romance with some humor, wonderful quirky characters, and a touch of mystery...
*** thank you so much to Nicola May and Rachel at Rachel‘s Random Resources for a copy of this wonderful book ***
