Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Collection Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 5,749 ratings

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of deductive reasoning (somewhat mistakenly - see inductive reasoning) and astute observation to solve difficult cases. He is arguably the most famous fictional detective ever created, and is one of the best known and most universally recognizable literary characters in any genre.

Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that featured Holmes. All but four stories were narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson, two having been narrated by Holmes himself, and two others written in the third person. The first two stories, short novels, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialized novels appeared almost right up to Conan Doyle's death in 1930. The stories cover a period from around 1878 up to 1903, with a final case in 1914.

This collection contains all the 60 official and the 6 unofficial Sherlock Holmes stories - in total 66 works (the biggest and greatest Sherlock Holmes collection in the eBook world).

Review

A master of deductive reasoning who can solve the most difficult crimes by spotting obscure clues overlooked by others, dilettante sleuth Sherlock Holmes was the hero of sixty stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle between 1887 and 1927. With the help of his loyal friend, Doctor Watson, Holmes brought countless crooks, thieves, swindlers, and murderers to justice. He even rose from the dead after Doyle tried to dispatch him in his twenty-fourth adventure, and readers protested. Here, in one volume, are all four full-length novels and fifty-six short stories about the colourful adventures of Sherlock Holmes--every word Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ever wrote about Baker Street's most famous resident. Also included is an introduction by lifetime Sherlockians Barbara and Christopher Roden. The Complete Sherlock Holmes is one of Barnes & Noble's Leatherbound Classics. Each volume features authoritative texts by the world's greatest authors in an exquisitely designed bonded-leather binding, with distinctive gilt edging and a silk-ribbon bookmark. Decorative, durable, and collectible, these books offer hours of pleasure to readers young and old and are an indispensable cornerstone for every home library. --From the Back Cover

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and died in 1930. Within those years was crowded a variety of activity and creative work that made him an international figure and inspired the French to give him the epithet 'the good giant'. He was the nephew of 'Dickie Doyle' the artist, and was educated at Stonyhurst, and later studied medicine at Edinburgh University, where the methods of diagnosis of one of the professors provided the idea for the methods of deduction used by Sherlock Holmes.

He set up as a doctor at Southsea and it was while waiting for patients that he began to write. His growing success as an author enabled him to give up his practice and turn his attention to other subjects. He was a passionate advocate of many causes, ranging from divorce law reform and the Channel Tunnel to the issuing of inflatable life-jackets to sailors. He also campaigned to prove the innocence of individuals, and his work on the Edjalji case was instrumental in the introduction of the Court of Criminal Appeal. He was a volunteer physician in the Boer War and later in life became a convert to spiritualism.

His greatest achievement was, of course, his creation of Sherlock Holmes, who soon attained international status and constantly distracted him from his other work; at one time Conan Doyle killed him but was obliged by public protest to restore him to life. And in his creation of Dr Watson, Holmes's companion in adventure and chronicler, Conan Doyle produced not only a perfect foil for Holmes but also one of the most famous narrators in fiction. Penguin publish all the books about the great detective, A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear, His Last Bow, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, The Uncollected Sherlock Holmes and The Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes.

These leatherbound covers are so nice. Everyone says don't judge a book by its cover - but I would buy a book just because it has a lovely cover. I bought this as a gift and have therefore not yet seen the inside.

This book is simply vast, all the Sherlock Holmes stories (one reviewer has found one omited). It has a handsome leather cover, and the paper is high quality, silky to the touch, all 1077 pages of it, and a xvi page introduction giving some of the history of the publication and its reception over the years. All for less than £20.00!
Except for The Hound of the Baskervilles I had not read a Holmes mystery since I accidentally dropped my paperback copy of a Penguin collection of short stories out of a train at a station somewhere in one of the Welsh valleys in 1959 , so it has been virtually a new read. And, wisely or not, I am basing my review on the first 225 pages.
There is always a feeling of loss when a mystery has been solved, but the solving and the atmosphere of the stories still grip the imagination. The stories are not great literature, but the style is at least literate, and unlike much great literature they can be readily understood. The writing is actually vivid and atmospheric, and much better written than the Agatha Christie stories, where the characters are wooden and the style not memorable. I warm towards the characters, they are certainly credible , although some of the plots are not. They are an enjoyable read, and should be read for fun!
Some of the incidental details reveal some interesting social history. Cocaine was legal, and heavily used by Holmes, much to Watson's concern, although the visit to an opium den in Limehouse did not mean he inhaled. He smoked an enormous quantity of shag. I also noted that both Holmes and Watson quite legally carried pistols when they considered them necessary. When travelling by train to Ross (presumably Ross on Wye) there was no Severn Tunnel, they travelled through Gloucester, and there were no restaurant cars, the trains stopped at Swindon for passengers to take lunch. It was remarkable that the mistress of a substantial household , expecting the two men to stay overnight, we read "a large and comfortable double-bedded room had been placed at our disposal." This was not thought to be remarkable, nor were any adverse conclusions drawn about the arrangements.
The main characters are, as one would expect, chivalrous, but their opinion of women would not be regarded as acceptable today, for example , on page 220, Holmes responds to a woman's argument in a way we would regard as patronising: " I have seen too much not to know that the impression of a woman may be more valuable than the conclusion of an analytical reasoner." What I have found remarkable, having seen so many Holmes films on television that when I read Holmes I automatically see Jeremy Brett, is that none of the films mention Watson's wife. She first appears in the second of the longer stories, and is subsequently referred to as "my wife". She is , of course, wholly in sympathy with Watson's support of Holmes's work.
I look forward to reading the next 47 stories, and would happily recommend this collection.

I decided to treat myself for my birthday by purchasing this complete Holmes box set. The item arrived today and I am really pleased with it. I envisiged cd's in platic sleeves, lots of them! I couldn't have been further from the truth.
This is a well presented box set, in sturdy packaging. On the back of the box is a list of all the plays, divided into 16 parts. For example; 'The Cardboard Box' is in Part 12, His Last Bow Vol.1. Open the box (a flip over lid) and each cd case is numbered 1 to 16 along the spine with the volume it belongs to, so locating an individual episode is easy.
Each case, made from robust card, contains 4 cd's and are the size of a single case. They all have the art work on the front and fold out once to reveal a brief description of each play, opening again to present the cd's. The only quibble I can think of is that there is no cast listing for each indidual play.
    The contents are as follows...

    The 4 Novels...
    -A Study in Scarlet
    -The Sign of the Four
    -The Hound of the Baskervilles
    -The Valley of Fear

-The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (12 cases)
-The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (12 cases)
-The Return of Sherlock Holmes (12 cases)
    -His Last Bow (8 cases)
-The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes (12 cases)

The price makes this a special purchase but any Sherlock Holmes fan would treasure such a wonderful adaption of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's work. Merrison and Wiliams are perfect as Holmes and Watson. Add an appearance by other great actors (Brian Blessed springs to mind), Bert Coules' dramatisation skills and this box set is pure gold! I will take year after year of pleasure listening and revisting these brilliant plays. A SOUND investment :)

I have listened to a lot of Sherlock Holmes audiobooks and even BBC radio dramas. I have also played a number of Sherlock Holmes videogames. The book is my first time reading the stories myself and I must say I enjoy them better this way!

There's no point reviewing Sherlock Holmes as series, but this edition at least is very nice and comes at a good price. The font is quite small of course, though not too much for me. The book's cover and print are very nice in my opinion, and the gold edges on the pages are lovely! I am about two hundred pages in so far and I still sometimes pause to marvel at how nice the book is, lol! Compared to my most expensive book the paper is thinner, but you could not fit this all in one book if it was any bigger.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to own Sherlock Holmes in a single volume!
