Product description
From the Inside Flap
From the Back Cover
The first writer to create timeless, universal fairy tales from his own imagination, Hans Christian Andersen conjured up a world of icy queens, match girls and tin soldiers, rewarded virtue and unfulfilled desire. Rich with popular tales such as 'The Emperor's New Clothes' and 'The Ugly Duckling', this revelatory new collection contains many later, darker and rarely collected stories, such as 'Auntie Toothache' and 'The Shadow', in which a man's shadow slyly takes over his life.
This sparkling new translation captures the eccentric charm of Andersen's original, colloquial Danish style as never before. The introduction vividly describes his changing style and there are notes on every tale.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 February 2025A beautiful translation which reawakens the stories. You really get feel for Andersen's sense of humour with this translation. It's a fun read full of class politics and an interesting morality. Where being bad doesn't always get you punished, so long as you started as the underdog.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 February 2013Before owning this book, I was aware of Nielsen as an illustrator from my Calla edition of "East of the Sun and West of the Moon".
This particular edition, published by Hodder & Stoughton is really quite exquisite. It is a large book, the front cover of which has a very detailed decoration in gold. Sixteen stories make up this work, with twelve colour illistrations. Personly ally, I feel the illustrations in "East of the Sun" are of a better quality than here, but still they are very pleasing. Whereas Rackham has perhaps more of an elemental quality to his illustrations, Nielsen's are more rooted in our human world.
Still, this would make a lovely addition to any library or it would be a lovely way to introduce youngsters to Andersen's lovely tales.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 December 2013I bought this for my sister as a Christmas present as she doesn't know any nursery rhymes or Hans Christian Andersen tales ( the strange girl!) I haven't given it to her yet but I'm sure she'll like it. It was very well packaged and was delivered quickly.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 October 2018Really boring. Zero creativity in the stories and super predictable

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 April 2014Some of the most beautiful illustrations I have ever seen in a children's book. Truly magical! A must have for any bookshelf.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 January 2014Always loved these stories since being a child. For me they provided a sound basis for believing in morals and happy endings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful! And much better than Grimm's.
Delightful on every level -- the 1960 translation has a lovely conversational style mostly aimed at the young, often with a good-humored parallel track so there are things that only the adults understand; the stories are respectful of Christianity; the length of the tales is just right and nicely varied; the moral lessons have plenty of twists; the scattered illustrations are a splendid complement; it's quite suitable for use by homeschoolers; and this hardcover edition has a very pleasing print, weight of paper, feel of the cover, and overall size. I'm hoping to read these stories one day to our toddling grandchild when he's older, but for now the book is a treat for me. By way of comparison, I strongly prefer this book to the somewhat dense "Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales" (Margaret Hunt translator), which I separately purchased and thought was fine until I started reading this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first EL Children’s Classic — LOVE IT!
The book came in nearly brand new condition. In fact, I can’t see anything wrong with it. I’m extremely happy that I bought this as the beginning of a whole collection of EL Children’s Classics that I can read with my kids, and hopefully they can read them with their kids one day.
