Are We Driving up the Right Riverbed?: Against all odds, an English couple restore a Spanish ruin in Andalucia Kindle Edition
The true story of a British couple on holiday in Spain, who discover a ruined farmhouse for sale in Andalucia. The romantic notion of owning their own little place in the sun - for not very much money - and being able to live a Spanish lifestyle, is too good to resist.
Unfortunately, as so often happens in Spain, the deal is not quite what it seems when they discover that the man selling the property does not actually own it. This is only the start of a long journey. Renovating the finca becomes a much bigger task than anticipated. Along the way there are many comic episodes and they encounter a host of extraordinary characters, including six different builders and a hostile neighbour. Comedy and confusion ensue.
Nothing daunted, a few years later they decide to have a house built to their own design. Once again, there are unforeseen problems. A rogue lawyer absconds with their money, and a series of totally bizarre events conspire to make a simple project into a complex puzzle; it takes many years before the reasons for all these frustrations finally fall into place.
Vital reading for anyone wishing to restore a ruin, renovate a finca, or battle with Spanish bureaucracy in a bid to enjoy a little place in the sun.

About the author

David Collison’s career began in 1955 as an ASM at the Arts Theatre Club in London where the young Artistic Director, Peter Hall, discovered that David had a particular aptitude for spot-cueing sound effects on 78 rpm discs. This led to an interest in recording sound effects and eventually becoming thee first person to be called a Sound Designer in the theatre. In 1962, he was the first person to receive a poster credit for sound.
During the 1970s and 1980s, he was sound designer on more than sixty musicals in London’s West End, including Fiddler on the Roof, Blitz, Pickwick, Company, Cabaret, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Mame, A Little Night Music, Grease, Applause, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, etc.
He was also Sound Designer for the Royal Shakespeare Company under Sir Peter Hall and for the National Theatre Company under Sir Laurence Olivier. As a consultant, he designed permanent sound systems for many theatres and concert halls in the UK and around the world, including the the National Theatre of Great Britain.
In 2007, he was honoured by the USITT (United States Institute of Theatre Technology) with the Harold Burris-Meyer Distinguished Career in Sound Design Award.
Books Published:
STAGE SOUND (1976) with a foreword by Sir Peter Hall. Second edition in 1982.
“Collison’s book would be an important addition to theatre and college libraries even if it were not a good one - which it is.” CHOICE (USA)
THE SOUND OF THEATRE (2008) describes the use and development of sound in the theatre from the Ancients Greeks up to the modern digital age.
“The whole book is such an informative and generous record of its subject.”
HAL PRINCE (Broadway producer and director)
ARE WE DRIVING UP THE RIGHT RIVERBED? published in 2017, is an account of the many years he and his wife spent renovating a ruined cottage in Spain and then attempting to build a house they had designed in Andalucia. It is a story of elation, despair and comedy in equal measures.
“I was intrigued after such vivid descriptions of the potential property in Spain how David and Alison’s journey would continue. Glad to say I was not disappointed”

A brilliant “what on earth will happen next?” thrilling read, full of entertainment, and a twisty story beautifully told. How to survive in foreign parts, a very British tale.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 March 2018A wonderful and very amusing read, detailing the author's continual trials and tribulations whilst attempting to build their perfect holiday cottage in Spain. If you've ever had to deal with local government bureaucracy in a foreign country you'll have every sympathy with David and Alison. I couldn't put this book down!
Knowing David and Alison, I had heard part of the story, but it was great to fill in the gaps and hear all the details. Very well written and enjoyable.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 February 2021I loved reading this book and take my hat of to Alison and David for persevering through Spain’s corrupt and confusing planning and building regulations. Read this book if you are considering property in Spain, and go into it with your eyes well and truly open.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 September 2018This is an amazing true story of a British couples determination to achieve a Spanish holiday home
in the campo of South Spain.
The problems they are presented with by the Spanish authorities is unbelievable. The stoic character of them both is commendable, especially with the complication of the language issue.
I thoroughly enjoyed their struggles over the years which puts my dealings with the legal system in Spain as smallfry.
I have read many books about people who have bought overseas and this is the worst case of bureaucracy I have encountered.
I challenge you to read this book and disagree.
The author's descriptions are to detail and make good reading.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 May 2018If you are even remotely considering buying and restoring a property in Spain as a hideaway in the sun, this is a 'must read'. The fortitude and determination this couple showed over many, many years to achieve their dream is a beautifully written read. Often humorous, you share their ups and downs, their frustration, anger and happy moments. It paints a wonderful picture of the region (Malaga, Alumenacar), the characters and personalities who live there and the lives they lead. A highly recommended, heart-warming story and it's a joy to share their travails over the many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars O M G !!
This story takes the cake! Wow! This couple has fortitude and then some. How they can be as patient and understanding as they were through all of this I can only guess. Perhaps the delicious local cuisine and spectacular views smoothed the rough edges and crazy Spanish bureaucracy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spanish country properties - an epic saga
An extraordinary tale of the trials and tribulations of restoring country cottages in Spain, spanning several decades of dogged determination and ingenuity. Primarily a commentary on the burocratic convolutions and practical complexities of holiday homes in a rapidly evolving country, it reflects the author's obvious love for the place and its people. It is populated with remarkable characters and events, all treated with warmth and humour. Eminently readable and should be compulsory reading for anyone considering a similar venture.
