About the author

Julia E. Clements lives in the north of Italy with her husband, two sons, and gorgeous rescue cat, Pan.
She started writing children's books when her first son was about six years old. She used to love reading books by Enid Blyton and C.S. Lewis, and when she couldn't find anything similar, she decided to write some herself!
She loves Italy - the food, the country and the people - and can now speak the language fluently, which is why you find some Italian words in her books.
She hopes to write books that children will love to read and re-read over the years while accompanying them through their childhood and adolescence, leaving them with fond memories, just as the books she read have left their mark on her.
Other books by Julia E. Clements include Dreamland, which is also available as an audiobook, and Adventure in Malasorte Castle. You can also download the digital version of Last of the Guardians for free from all online retailers.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 September 2017My girls and I read this beautiful story together. They are eleven and eight and the story held their attention throughout. This fact may not sound like a particularly exciting fact but it’s rare for me to find a story that they both enjoy. Following Danny and his friends on their journey, we couldn’t wait to find out what the next chapter and adventure would bring. The author has woven a story that includes, Dragons, Unicorns, Giants and more! What I especially love is that boys and girls can equally enjoy the tale and find something they will enjoy. This was a wonderful read and will no doubt be a story that children will treasure. I adore the cover too and can’t wait to get this in paperback!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 November 2017Children love to escape to a different world that is filled with adventure. Worlds like Narnia and Neverland have enthralled our little readers for generations. Here we are introduced to Julia E.Clements Dreamland; a wondrous place that takes the shape of a young boy, Danny’s, imagination. But apart from magical creatures and adventure the book also contains a very powerful message. Danny has lost his father and struggles to come to terms with that. He finds it impossible to talk to his mother as he doesn’t want to reopen any wounds. As often happens, our anxieties, grief and anger manifest itself in our dreams as something scary and dark. Danny will have to trust the ones dearest to him to conquer his demons. A lovely adventure story with a positive message which young boys and girls will love.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 November 2017This book is a great children's read! It has so many lovely, magical characters and you do really get behind the main protagonist, Danny, and his Dreamland friends and allies. The style is fluid and engaging, pitched at children without ever straying into tones that might be condescending. I also really liked the great way the story touched on some sombre themes that might provoke discussion, in a considered, and considerate, way.
For me, personally, the story jumped around a tiny bit - while in keeping with the nature of dreams, it felt a bit too much like an event occurred purely as a plot device, while other times things didn't entire mesh together for me. That said, I'm about 30 years too old to be the target audience!
I think this would be a fantastic read for children aged six/seven and up, who are comfortable with reading but need to be stretched a little with vocabulary and "more grown up" books.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 September 2017A delightful story about a boy called Danny who received a special gift on his tenth birthday, enabling him to travel to a fantasy land in his dreams. I loved the way this story took me back to my childhood days, where giants, dragons, and witches starred in the books I used to read. This is a neat story which adults will enjoy as much as their children.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 March 2020THIS BOOK WAS SENT TO MY GRANDAUGHTER AS A PRESENT. SHE IS A BOOK WORM AND WAS DELIGHTED WITH IT. SHE LIVES IN LEEDS AND I LIVE IN DUBLIN.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 September 2017My 12 year old daughter loved this story. Calling her down for dinner wasn't easy when she had her head in this book, kept her engrossed and was sad when she reached the end! Very much hoping for another from this author.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 September 2017Without spoiling the story we have the main character Danny plus a few unusual helpers. Danny has some issues in his personal life that are addressed on his journeys and adventures in a land that he enters while he is asleep. The author has written the story well. I would think it's suitable for age 9-10 upwards due to some of the wording. An enjoyable read addressing important issues. With a little more laughs and sketches along the way maybe? it would certainly appeal to a younger audience too. As an adult reader I found it a good read. Maybe Danny will come back and enjoy the great adventures with a lighter heart? I hope so and look forward to it! Wonderful illustrations. Little similarities to Tolkien and C. S. Lewis in the style of writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A charming read for young and old
What a great read! As an adult, I felt like I was revisiting all the cherished books of my childhood, melded together and given a modern twist.
At times Disney-esque, and with characters reminiscent of Enid Blyton’s tales, this is a well-written story that will capture the imagination of any young one and leave them clamouring for the next instalment. I can’t wait myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable read for kids
I bought Dreamland for my daughter, who is 12 and slowly beginning to read English language books. This was her first full novel of that length. She really enjoyed it. She loves magical beings and is always captivated by the concept of other children encountering them and fighting evil. She liked Danny, the main character, who enters a different world when he goes to sleep, and enjoyed his journey. The language in this book was so well crafted and accessible to kids that she was well able to read this at her own speed without losing herself in translation issues. A good buy and a very recommendable middle grade read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting well written story with an important message
Dreamland is such an amazing children's book. Danny receive a ticket from his mom to travel to dreamland. He uses it almost every night and experience fantastic adventures together with his wonderful new dream friends. As a reader you first enter a magical space as an Alice in Wonderland fantasy, where Danny meets Lucy and Tom, unicorns, the dragon and giant, witch Stregona, Argit the cricket... Then the book turns into a Harry Potter, with such exciting stories that it is impossible to stop reading.
The story is great entertaining and very well written. What I found such a big 'plus' is how the author unfolded an important message in the book for children and adults. Sometimes we need to stand still and look at our guilt feelings, forgive ourselves as Danny did with the help of his friends.
I think it is clear I loved this book and I think children (and adults) will enjoy it too. I can not give less than 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful read for kids - and everyone else.
Filled with magic, unicorns, fairies and other fantastic stories, ‘Dreamland’ is a delightful children’s chapter book. Each chapter is a new adventure in which Danny learns to work with his strengths and face his fears.
The author has very effectively portrayed Danny as a regular kid, with a great imagination and sense of humour as well as his fears and flaws, so kids will easily relate to him and his responses to the things that happen in his stories.
This would be a great book for families to read together, or for individual reading for kids in MY and older. As an adult reader, I still found it engaging and entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic and touching tale
This is a fast paced children's tale filled from a deep fountain of imagination. The idea of receiving a ticket to visit an enchanted land in your own dreams is absolutely charming. While one fun adventure chases another in the beginning, the story picks up in intensity when something evil slips into the magic world.
The author has succeeded in unravelling a tale that encourages children to face their own demons with a powerful message of hope and trust. When reaching the end, I couldn't help thinking "Aw, it's already over!"
