- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 August 2017Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseA new collection of short stories by Adam Nevill, Hasty for the Dark’, will soon be published and 'Before You Wake' is a taste of things to come.
The Three stories; The Angels of London. Always in Our Hearts and Hippocampus took me around an hour and a half to read so this is a nice treat if you've got a couple of hours spare.
As with all Adam Nevill fiction this work is on the far side of surreal darkness and the brooding, eerie atmosphere begins right from the start. The ideas behind all three stories are unsettling and macabre but there's also a thread of beauty and tragedy written between the lines. Quite a heady mix. Adam Nevill is one of few authors who brings back to life my childhood terrors by creating believable situations which he distorts into extraordinary horror. One of my favourite authors if only for those reasons!.
Also included with the stories are; Author's Forward, Publication History, More Horror from Adam L. G. Nevill (links to obtain a free download) and Author Biography.
Thoroughly recommended and I'm looking forward to 'Hasty for the Dark'.

The stories themselves were good but, to me, it felt a little bit 'look at all the synonyms I know'. A shame, but not the end of the world. I'll try this author again when I'm feeling more clever.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 August 2023Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI love ADAM NEVILL as an author. There isn't a short story or novel of his I havent not enjoyed.
These 3 short stories are great if you want a short break from your usual or just a hit of fantastic horror and gore.
Nevill does suspense extremely well and with this short stories leaves the details around the storylines quite ambiguous; as a reader your own perverse imagination is allowed to take over which personally I find exciting.
Whilst doing this, Nevill does not scrimp on depth in intensity, surroundings and characters.
A must read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 April 2020Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI enjoyed the first two of these, but not ‘Hippocampus’. That’s no criticism on the part of the skill of the author, for the last of them was well written, but simply wasn’t to my taste; others will doubtless find it to theirs.
In ‘The Angels of London’, Nevill deftly conveys the squalidness and hopelessness that many encounter when seeking their fortunes in the capital, only to find a their illusions shattered by the reality of dead-end temp work that leaves them struggling to cover the bills. However, what starts as a plausibly seedy excursion into the life of one of the city’s many lost souls, soon warps into an ever-stranger unravelling of his sense of reality, culminating in a most gruesome and horrible twist.
‘Always in Our Hearts’ centres upon a Brummie taxi driver. He is, it must be said, not a happy man, for it opens with his attempt to expunge himself of the memory of a nocturnal encounter with a child cyclist. Wheels turn within wheels, and he finds himself called upon to deliver a peculiar selection of passengers to a succession of addresses. Black smoke. Always black smoke. A gruesome denouement awaits.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 November 2017Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI was looking forward to reading this, having heard excellent things about the author and working on the premise that his book, The Ritual, had been made into a film recently so it must be good. While I can't (yet) speak for the The Ritual as I've only read the prologue (though I was impressed by that), I'd suggest short stories are not his forte.
The only emotion I felt reading these tales are overwhelming boredom. Ok, he can paint a scene vividly but if it doesn't actually drive the story forward, what is the point? That said, when it comes to describing what is meant to be the horrifying moments in the tales, I was left with a sense of indifference. In fact, at one point, the author even states that the character is scared rather than showing us through his actions and it just feels hollow.
Characterisation isn't particularly strong and I didn't find myself caring on way or the other what happened to the central characters in each tale.
All in all there are three tales of decreasing quality. If these are meant to serve as motivation to buy the entire volume of collected stories then it has motivated me to do the opposite. Still, saved me some money I guess.
I'll be sure to read some of his longer works because some people just can't write short stories (I include Stephen King in that whose short stories are just plain dull, whereas his novels are, by and large, brilliant). But this one was a big fat miss for me and I'm not sure if I'm being charitable giving it two stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unsettling stuff
Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI had read none of the author's work before and what a discovery this is. He has a natural knack for bringing you into the room, and it's never a nice place to be. Solid horror and I will definitely read more of his books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very well crafted short horror!
Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase3 very well crafted horror stories that not only linger but make you consider - what if that was me.
The Angels of London - what if you were to find cheap accommodation that wasn't so cheap in the end? But then Frank never knew there was a catch.
Always In Our Heart - an accident - just an accident. Yet what happens if you don't take some responsibility? Ray soon finds out.
Hippocampus - is anyone alive on a ship at sea?
This author also includes some snippets from other books - some definitely caught my attention!
