The Winter's Tale (Dream Classics) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 831 ratings

The Winter's Tale is a play by William Shakespeare, first published in the First Folio in 1623. Although it was listed as a comedy when it first appeared, some modern editors have relabeled the play a romance. Some critics, among them W. W. Lawrence (Lawrence, 9-13), consider it to be one of Shakespeare's "problem plays", because the first three acts are filled with intense psychological drama, while the last two acts are comedic and supply a happy ending.

I read this play along with listening to an unabridged recording of the play by the Marlow Dramatic Society. It was a great way to experience the play and take in the material.

The edition also included plenty of background on the play including how it was a departure from Shakespeare’s other works- combining tragedy and comedy (tragicomedy), including its famous stage direction: ‘Exit, pursued by a bear’

I certainly found it an interesting way to explore the play and might well do it for other of his works.

It is a clearly laid-out, well-punctuated edition with an extensive introduction and three useful appendices, including the full text of the original story on which the play is based and some admirably precise musical material related to the songs within the play. Explanation of obscure locutions in the text is generally concise, although not always comprehensive. The frame of reference is wide and pertinent.

My only disappointment with this edition, but it is a significant one given that the text of the play itself is easily obtainable at no expense, lies in the tone, rather than the content of the editor's introduction and notes. It seems to me that he is more concerned with proving previous commentators wrong than he is with enlarging on useful work that has gone before. The slight whiff of justification mars an otherwise excellent piece of work. Sometimes you have to accept that Shakespeare was an ambiguous writer and seeking to define a single meaning at the expense of other readings can reduce the scope of interpretation unnecessarily.

Find Shakespeare quite a challenge but after reading it several times I really was engrossed and enjoyed it.
Needed to read it because I was going to a production of The Winters Tale at the Lyceum in Edinburgh. Brilliant production and now I am awakened to Shakespeare after 50 years Read Romeo and Juliet for O level and Othello for A level

A lover of Shakespeare will surely enjoy this read, has all you'd expect from Shakespeare, disguises, hate, love and death. An epic tale spanning a long length of time. If you're new to Shakespeare, maybe this is a little bit too much for a first go, but if storytelling to concentrate and preserve then give It a go! A luscious and indulgent read.

This has to be the best series of Shakespeare's plays. Erudite, well laid out and comprehensive - this is far better than what my uni wanted me to buy. I will continue to buy this series going forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very thought-provoking tragic tale
Reviewed in the United States on 15 April 2021
“The Winter’s Tale” by William Shakespeare is a fascinating, tragic, psychological but little known play that Shakespeare wrote about five years before his death. It is about a pagan king with a loving lovely pregnant wife, and a son. He develops an unfounded jealousy and is convinced despite no one agreeing with him that his wife, the queen, was unfaithful to him with his friend and the child in her body is not his. Despite being assured by the Oracle that his wife committed no adultery and the child is his, he has her killed and banishes his just born daughter. His son dies out of anguish. He soon realizes that he was wrong. But it is too late. Now he suffers for what he did.
Sixteen years pass. His daughter is raised in another kingdom. By chance, she comes to his land, he meets her, realizes she is his daughter, and embraces her. He is shown a statute of his late wife. The statute comes alive and his wife forgives him saying she still loves him. He is is now after sixteen years given a second chance, forgiven for what he thought was unforgivable – although his son is lost.
The play is well-worth watching. Its moral is that problems, even the worst ones, can be resolved in a large measure, at least somewhat.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tragedy that becomes sunnier and sunnier, with an incursion in the paranormal

Ey, it was free! The barebones play by Shakespeare. You can see a version of it and follow along on youtube, where the BBC presents it with animated puppets. I love Mamilius and one aspect that I disagree with, that the second part is a comedy because it "ends well", is that Mamilius dies and stays dead. If it'd been a real comedy, he'd have been found "pretend-dead" or saved then hidden from his father's wrath or something..
