The Game (Cronos Classics) Kindle Edition

On the eve of their wedding, twenty-year-old Jack Fleming arranges a secret ringside seat for his sweetheart to view her only rival: the "game." Through Genevieve's apprehensive eyes, we watch the prizefight that pits her fair young lover, "the Pride of West Oakland," against the savage and brutish John Ponta and that reveals as much about her own nature, and Joe's, as it does about the force that drives the two men in their violent, fateful encounter.

Responding to a review that took him to task for his realism, Jack London wrote, "I have had these experiences and it was out of these experiences, plus a fairly intimate knowledge of prize-fighting in general, that I wrote The Game." With this intimate realism, London took boxing out of the realm of disreputable topics and set it on a respectable literary course that extends from A. J. Liebling to Ernest Hemingway to Joyce Carol Oates. The familiarity of London's boxing writing testifies to its profound influence on later literary commentators on the sport, while the story The Game tells remains one of the most powerful and evocative portraits ever given of prizefighters in the grip of their passion.

Jack London is a master at describing situations. He stimulates one's imagination that forbids the reader from letting go. This book is no exception...a one sitting read!

Never have I seem such a raw look into the emotion we call love. This was very well written and although it used some, let's just say "dated" language, I thought it added to the appeal and charm of the story. The author's style and skill with the written word takes you into the minds of the characters and makes you feel and see their thoughts and identify with the decisions they make and reactions to each other. There were a few things I didn't like, but the things I thought were great about this were so abundant, it would be fair for me to arch my fingers to type the words. Enjoyed this ... and it was free so that made it even better.

A very engaging, quickly moving short story. While boxing is a key part of the story in which London describes the fighter's love of the boxing "game" and his fiancee's belief that she is at odds with his intense love of boxing, you could substitute other activities a young man is drawn to: football, baseball, chemistry, horses, etc. with the same type of complex challenge. However, in this case he is involved with a sport that is potentially deadly.
I could kind of see the inevitable ending, but hoped London would take another route in which the boy would have to make a conscious choice between his game and his love. But, London being London this story was true to his style as exhibited in other works. Of course, this is a very quick read, flawlessly written and would appeal to a very wide range of readers.
