The Fiona Mason Mysteries: Books 1 to 3 Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 137 ratings

Travel can be murder… Fiona’s new career as a tour manager for a coach company provides her with plenty of unexpected challenges, including tracking down murderers and terrorists before they harm her passengers. This box set includes the first three books in a series of cozy mysteries each set in a different country. If you like your crime with a touch of humour, beautiful locations, and plots that keep you guessing to the end, then this is the series for you. Perfect for fans of M E Beaton, Elizabeth Peters and Sara Rossett. Buy the boxed set to solve three cozy mysteries today! Blood on the BulbFields Fiona’s first assignment turns into a nightmare. As if coping with difficult passengers were not enough, one of them disappears in mysterious circumstances. Suddenly a full-scale investigation is in swing headed by the autocratic Peter Montgomery-Jones who doesn’t make Fiona’s job any easier. The reason quickly becomes clear. The missing man was undercover on the trail of diamond smugglers. When his body turns up Fiona must face the fact that she has a murder in her party. The body count quickly mounts up when they move on to Amsterdam and Fiona needs to work out which of her passengers is the killer before she becomes his next victim. Blood in the Wine Fiona’s Rhine Valley tour gets off to a disastrous start when one of her passengers is found brutally stabbed. Fiona is determined to find the killer before his wife is formally charged with his murder. Peter Montgomery-Jones needs to track down the plans of a guidance missile system before they fall into the hands of revolutionary Uzbek terrorists. She thinks he is pompous and patronizing; he thinks she is interfering and impetuous but if either is to achieve their goal, they need to work together. Blood and Chocolate Fiona’s tour of Belgium goes horribly awry when one of her passengers is found dead soon after the assassination of a British MP at a rally. Could there be a link between the two deaths? Once again, Fiona finds herself at odds with MI6 chief, Peter Montgomery-Jones who always appears to have his own agenda. Reviews ‘There’s no doubt that Miss Cranswick can weave a murder mystery. What she also does though is engage you with so many characters, with so many balls in the air, that another writer might not be able to pull it off. She also seems well travelled because each of her locations is fabulously detailed. In fact, so engaging is Fiona Mason that I did wonder if the author herself had been a little bit of an amateur sleuth.’ ‘Judith Cranswick's Fiona Mason is a very likeable woman. And she's smart. Sort of a latter-day Miss Marple. She gets involved, against her will, in mysterious doings. And, since she's a clever woman, knows when something is 'just not right', She follows up on her intuition and the facts.’ ‘This is a good old-fashioned murder mystery in the vein of Agatha Christie and Minette Walters, capturing the light tapdance of Christie’s more popular novels and Walters’ engaging style whilst adding Cranswick’s own uniqueness to proceedings.’

Fiona has taken a job as The Travel Manager (rep) for a coach company specialising in exclusive European coach tours. She is middle aged and recently widowed with time hanging heavy on her hands, having spent the last 9 years nursing her ailing husband. Each book has a different tour destination and Fiona gets involved in solving the murder, or murders, that follow her around Europe. Her sleuthing skills are very logical and she invariably finds herself working with MI6 Chief Peter Montgomery Jones who is, by book 3, obviosly developing 'tendresse' for her.

The books contain the tour schedules for the the destinations and they are beautifully described. Judith's characters are believable, especially the more nasicistic, demanding and unpleasant tourists and the cheery coach driver. The plots are compelling but one or 2 of the technological details are a little dated - eg people in the first book still using film instead of digital cameras - this improves in the later books. Best described as being of the cozy murder genre, these books are a good relaxing read. The boxed set is good value too.

I enjoyed all 3 books in this series. Had read the first, some time ago and was anxious to continue the trilogy. I was not disappointed. All 3 a fusion of suspense with an insight into coach travel on the continent. The plots twist and turn and I had no idea until near the end who the culprits were.

As I have written a review for each of the individual books, I don't intend to say a lot here. I will say that getting the three books together was a great bargain and I loved each area that Fiona Mason's tours went to in each book. I especially loved the second book, Blood in the Wine because it reminded me of the wonderful cruise of the Rhine we took as my special 60th birthday treat. But I actually thought the plot in the second book was the best. Of the three, I liked the third one the least, but I've already explained that in my review of it. I think that mysteries on tours is a brilliant idea, it means the setting for each book is different - and Judith Cranswick would make a great tour guide herself, I feel, because her descriptions are excellent. All in all, I enjoyed the books and have downloaded the next one to read.

I cannot remember when I have enjoyed not one, not two but three stories so much. On the surface a series of books with the same two main characters based around a bus tour would not be the most obvious to grip attention and induce eager page-turning but somehow and with great skill Judith Cranswick has hit the jackpot here. Her research into the countries featured in each book is immaculate. The text is well crafted and, as a teacher of English as a foreign language, I really appreciate the excellent use of English. I am a fan and look forward to more Cranswick tales. Thank you for writing these.

I absolutely loved this set! The way it manages to immerse you in the setting is wonderful, there's so much variety due to the many places visited by Fiona who I related to instantly. All of the local detail is spot on and you really feel like you are along for the ride, well thought out plots with depth and surprise makes these books a fantastic read.

I like your books, but I am not really able to remember which of the characters are which and end up slightly confused. I think that it may be that so many characters are introduced at the same time. Nevertheless they make for a pleasant read.

Both my wife and I loved the three books. My wife thought I would not like the stories but I could relate to all the Coach trips we have been on and the characters 'spring to life'. We purchased the books through Amazon so I do not think they are pirate copies,(re e-mail sent earlier and your reply). Let us have more Fiona Mason novels. All the best.

Just finished reading all three books and really enjoyed them. Setting the murder mysteries on a coach trip was a great idea - it's a travelogue as well as a mystery! There were some great characters and the question is will Fiona and Peter get together - I definitely need to read the rest of the series.

I read these books again during Covid 19 lockdown here in Australia.
They are intriguing, A perfect balance of mystery and travel details with excellent characters. Reading about these places made me feel far less trapped during lockdown. This author is excellent.

All three books were very enjoyable. There were lots of characters but I enjoyed the large, friendly and informative bus driver. Never truly understood her relationship with her semi police contact. Thought she could have been more confident in her contribution, but that was a personality thing. In the last book I thought too much time was spent the police discussions. I thought her writing moved well, except for the police discussions.

2.0 out of 5 stars good tale...needs editing

A fair enough sequel to the previous tales but needs a lot of editing...misused words, spelling errors, etc.
This episode seemed to drag on and could use a little spicing up,or cutting back.

I have enjoyed each of the three Fiona Mason mysteries I've read, although I liked the third book in this compendium, with its slow-as-molasses in January meetings of various bureaucrats as they hunted down a possible terrorist, the least. I appreciated the fact that each of these books was very well written (although I am a pedant who frequently argues with the author's use, or lack, of commas!), well-edited, and had characters of surprising depth along with a hint of slow-blooming romance. I enjoyed every minute of the armchair-tourism aspect of the novels, too. Since each of the books had a large number of characters, I definitely appreciated the character list provided at the start of each novel, which prevented confusion. The entire book was certainly an wonderful diversion from the recent onslaught of inane and often trite cozy mysteries I've been reading. Truly, a very good book, and one I can recommend..

    5.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed reading Books 1 to 3

I enjoyed reading Books 1 to 3. The characters are varied from book to book. The description of the different tourist sites make me feel as though I am one of the travelers. Fiona is a interesting lead and I enjoy her interaction with Winston and others in her group. The stories keep your interest and I often think I know who the culprit is only to find I have to rethink my choice. I look forward to reading more from this writer. Give these books a read you will enjoy them as I did.
