Safe Haven - Rise of the RAMs: Book 1 of the Post-Apocalyptic Zombie Horror series Kindle Edition
The planet has succumbed to a monstrous virus. Those who die from the infection return as savage predators hell-bent on spreading the virus to the rest of the human population. The UK and Ireland are the last hold-outs, but when the infrastructure supporting their self-imposed quarantine collapses, it's everyone for themselves.
Mike Fletcher and his sister Emma live in Leeds. With the city’s streets overrun by the dead, their only option is to flee. They take their younger siblings and set off to find their last remaining relative in the far north-west of Scotland.
As they travel north they encounter other survivors – but who can they trust? Their terrifying journey will require them to confront horrors both human and inhuman, in the outside world and within themselves. Will they ever find a safe haven?

About the author

Christopher Artinian was born and raised in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Wanting to escape life in a big city and concentrate more on working to live than living to work, he moved to the Outer Hebrides in the north-west of Scotland in 2004 and has lived there ever since with his wife and dogs.
He released his debut novel, Safe Haven: Rise of the Rams, in February 2017. This was the first instalment in a post-apocalyptic zombie series. There are currently twenty-eight books available in the Safe Haven universe, including the best-selling and award-winning sister series, The End of Everything.
Also available from Artinian, is the fast-paced, best-selling survival horror trilogy, “Relentless”, and the new post-apocalyptic/dystopian series, "The Burning Tree".
In October 2017, he won the prestigious Zombie Book of the Month Award for Rise of the RAMs. In December 2017 he was also bestowed with the "Best New Author" award by the Reanimated Writers group. In addition, Safe Haven won the "Best Series" award in the popular GMZ poll. The End of Everything: Book 1 also won the Zombie Book of the Month title in May 2019.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 September 2024I’ve read so many zombies books that I now struggle to find something new. This story started off strong and stayed that way. It’s got great potential and i am looking forward to reading more. The author does a great job of bringing the story to life and making you care for the characters!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 February 2024I loved this book, it was an amazing read. The main characters, Mike and Lucy, are outstanding the others are a bit wishy-washy for me. In the situation in which the group find themselves, Mike is definitely the number one person that I would want by my side. It is so well-written that it makes reading it so easy, the pages just flow. It's a fantastic story and I would recommend anyone wanting to lose themselves to read it.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 March 2025Great take on the somewhat overdone zombie apocalypse theme, it's very much like a cross between the walking dead and 28 days later, I'm looking forward to reading the rest
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 March 2020Is it just me? Are my standards too high? Or am I just living in a world of zombies who will mindlessly consume any old trite an author feeds them?
I really wanted to like this book, and I'm still looking for that elusive 'semi-realistic' zombie novel to immerse myself into, but I have to say this story felt a little too embarrassing to read at times. Unfortunately, it's hard to give a critical review without providing spoilers, so I'll try to keep this as vague as possible.
To his credit, the author can write. The words flow off the page and nothing feels too stilted or needlessly flashy; the author just wants to tell you a story, not try to impress you with his intellect. This is rare with indie authors, and it's why I've given an overall neutral score, (since other readers may disagree with my opinion about the rest of the book).
My main criticism with this book is that both the characters and the situations feel forced to the point of being unbelievable. Take the main character, for example. He's twenty years old, yet he's somehow more competent at everything he does than every other character combined. With a screwdriver he is more capable at taking on a horde of zombies than a squad of marines with rifles. Every strategy he comes up with will have doctors and other professional adults following his instructions because they can't come up with anything better. Probably since every character other than the lead protagonist is essentially a cardboard cut-out - utterly useless on their own, and in need of his protection.
This leads me onto the dialogue, which helps to illustrate this point. Whenever Mike comes up with any plan/notion/whatever and someone disagrees, they'll barely be given a sentence to argue their case before we go back to Mike being given several paragraphs of uninterrupted speech to elucidate his argument. Although the cardboard cut-outs may be uncomfortable with his ideas, they'll reluctantly agree that his idea is the best.
Also, the dialogue provides far too much exposition at times, and is the one element of the author's writing that can sometimes feel very unnatural. For example, a character races through a dangerous sequence of events and barely escapes with their lives, but then gives details of every enemy position, their perspective/most likely strategy, even the amount of ammo the enemy used when recounting it moments later.
And finally the situations feel forced. When character A meets character B and a small glance is exchanged, you instantly know the author is going to try to pair them up. Cue character A going to location X and, oh look, there's B again. Five miles down the road: who's this? It's B? Take a trip around the city, turn a corner... and you just bumped into B yet again. Facepalm!
Again, there was little wrong with the actual writing, and the story started off surprisingly well. It's just that every subsequent chapter seemed to get progressively worse until I simply couldn't read any more. (I made it about half way through the book.) Teenagers will probably enjoy this book a lot more than older readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Action a plenty
If you're into the 'zombie' genre then this is an excellent first book in this series. There is plenty of action and suspense. There is sufficient unique world building to avoid the feeling of a cookie cutter zombie book. Crucial elements of this book are the family relationship dynamic of the main characters, the broader view of what constitutes 'family' and the thematic treatment of moral decision-making as black and white contrasted with as black and white plus a whole lot of shades of grey and the translation of these world views into action. You'll want to jump straight into book 2 once you've finished this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and fun
This is what a post apocalyptic novel should be. Simple and fun. The characters are engaging and their story unfold with the action, not at the cost of it. Great read and I look forward to the next volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Characters!!
Nothing I love more, that a book about normal people, trying to make it in the APOC. That is this book. Well written characters, and a great plot line, actually found me unable to put this book down, until I finished it! Great read, and I am for sure getting book two now!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Story
This story had me from Chapter 1. If I'm ever in an apocalypse, I'd want a Mike in my life. He seemed like the only one capable of dealing with the situation. His need to protect his family is strong. If not for him, with the assistance of Doc, they wouldn't have made it. I was in tears when he finally reunited with his siblings. I appreciate this book wasn't short but well written. I didn't notice any typos and misspellings. I believe this is my first by this author and I'm excited for Book 2.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good first book
I enjoyed the book, it has plenty of action and interesting characters, although they don't seem completely fleshed out to me in this first installation. I will check out book 2 and see how it continues, purely because of the action that kept my focus.
