I spent some time in Italy and had the pleasure of eating Italian food prepared by Italians (better known to me as "the grandmothers"), and this is the first cookbook I've come across that uses the style and ingredients I saw there. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to enjoy proper Italian food.

One bit of warning... the anchovies used in Italy are fresh, not preserved. If you can't gain access to fresh anchovies, you might try using fish sauce instead. A staple in Thai cookery, it's now (finally!) available at supermarkets. It stinks to high heaven, but after it's simmered a while with the other recipe ingredients the smell goes away.

Apropos of nothing... Italians have - at most - three toppings on their pizza, and cheese would be counted as one of the three. They would also NEVER include sweet corn as one of those toppings.

No pictures and Italian food is rather boring in my opinion, I prefer British, Mexican and Chinese. Am I the only person in the country who cannot stand Indian food and finds Italian Restaurants' massively over-priced?

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple! I Like That!
Reviewed in the United States on 1 November 2010
I found this Kindle download pretty useful. The previous reviewer worried about a translation. Can't be sure what that means. I had no problem reading it in English. Being three quarters Italian, and yet not having an Italian last name, it doesn't bother me that the names aren't Italian. Having a non-Italian name doesn't make me less Italian.
As far as "Simple Italian Cookery" goes I find it a pleasure to read. None of those silly pictures and detail on how things should look after being prepared by detailed instruction. Perhaps it's my advantage of growing up in an Italian household with an immigrant mother from the Abruzzo that helps. Also, I was nurtured on Italian food and culture that lead me to be a chef for the last 35 years.
If there is any fault of this little book at all, it's that it may not appeal to those looking for a coffee table cookbook.

1.0 out of 5 stars This edition is a scam
Reviewed in the United States on 12 April 2019
The publisher of this Createspace edition is scammer and the text has copied from digital versions like those available at Project Guttenberg, but it has not been copied well or with any care.

Many of the recipes are missing ingredient lists. The text has not been formatted, and all the text for recipes, sections, or subsections appears the same. The table of contents does not include page numbers. There is no sourcing information to indicate where the text was copied from.

This publisher should be banned from the platform as it is clearly an abuse of the system. It also violates Project Guttenberg's terms of service as it does not include the sourcing information as required to reprint Project Guttenberg texts.

Had this publisher spent 15 minutes formatting the book correctly instead of just doing a copy and paste hack job, I would have been perfectly happy with this edition, but they have failed. They have failed spectacularly. This edition does not deserve even a single star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great recipes!
Reviewed in the United States on 10 August 2017
I loved the recipes but the format and grammar are terrible. The recipes are very unique. Some of the measurements seem to be a bit off but it is obvious what it should be. The book if full of recipes, a lot more than what I expected. There are about 5 recipes for tomato pastes and sauces.

Great job on the awesome recipes! Terrible job on the format. I still highly this cookbook for the recipes.
