Jennifer Peacock-Smith was born in South Africa in the late sixties to passionate parents struggling to find their place and to make a difference in their worlds of apartheid, feminism, and strict religion. Little Jenny quickly found herself falling through the cracks in their battle to be different, better, and "cleverer" than those before them or around them, and her mother’s fight to break the moulds. Born a girl instead of a boy, bubbly instead of serious, fun and talented instead of academic, everything about her was “wrong".

Neglect doesn’t always look like dirty or starved or diseased or beaten. Neglect is chronic and often invisible. In a small bubble entirely cut off from the rest of the world, scrawny little Jenny's voice, squashed by her parent’s need to find their own, is swiftly silenced, again and again. However, her shine refused to die and survived within her as a spark, a fighting spirit, and a sense of hope that defies logic.

It took five decades, six countries, multiple diagnoses, and ultimately a physical and emotional collapse for Jennifer to successfully find her voice, to thrive, to get the medical and psychological care she needed, and to begin the journey to a place of sanity and peace. Her story is one of crushing loneliness and isolation, but more than that, it's ultimately a story of resilience, hope, and redemption in ways that she could never have imagined.

A mentor, counsellor, artist, and now a successful author, Jennifer writes for various blogs, The Mighty, and other public spaces on neglect, emotional abuse, anxiety, disability and chronic illness. You can find her on most social media platforms under @JPeaSmith.

She is the author of "The Lion and the Peacock” and the first in her epic story “My Africa My Home - The Fault in the Family Memoir #1”.

At first I wasn't sure that this book would be for me. I don't particularly struggle with anxiety, but people close to me do, so it seemed worth a read. It is refreshing to see anxiety explained in a way that is easy to understand. The author uses descriptions that resonate with both the anxious mind and the calm, non-anxious mind. This book isn't quite a self-help book, but nor is it a self-indulgent tale about mental illness from the author. I like it! We all feel better when we know WHY something is making us feel the way it does, and this book is like a manual for anxiety and I think it'll equip a lot of people with the knowledge to help themselves. Looking forward to the next book.

Really interesting and clearly written... really easy to understand. Would recommend to anyone studying or wanting to understand psychology as it really enlightens and brings to mind what others are feeling and thinking in a different perspective, doesn't only relate to anxiety but it relates to so many different attributes in life.

Not just another book about a cure for panic attacks. For many years, decades actually, Jennifer had battled to find relief, if not a cure. Many psychologists, doctors and Cognitive Behavioural Therapists tried their best, but although Jennifer is forever grateful to all who gave time and effort to her cause, nothing worked. Through her courage determination and the study of biology and physiology she came up with a self help method. Not a fad, but something that works.

I was very curious about this title,. How on earth could someone write about conquering anxiety using a lion and a peacock ? All became clear very quickly. The author's friendly sharing of her experiences engaged me immediately. I feel I learned a lot from this short book, which I am sure would help me should I ever suffer such a frightening attack. Thank you to Jennifer Peacock Smith for her candour and engaging way with words.

I read this with an open view as knowing someone who is a victim of panic attacks . whether this technique will be of any use I don't know but the book gives a good understanding of what it must be like for the suffer and how debilitating it is a different take on how to idea with it.

This is great read on anxiety and panic attacks. It was a real eye opener on how debilitating and life affecting things like this are. It is also a reminder that we really do not know what is going on in other's lives, yet it is still easy to judge just by looking.

The techniques she uses makes sense, and may help even if your symptoms are not as acute as Jennifer's.

It's one thing to read a self-help book by an expert, it's quite another to read about a debilitating condition and how to deal with it by someone who has experienced that condition. Jennifer Peacock-Smith suffered crippling panic attacks for many years. She'd sought help for those many years with an open mind and an open heart, it's just that nothing seemed to work for her. This short book is about her struggle towards understanding and ultimately managing her attacks. She takes us step-by-step through her experiences of different treatments until she tries a new approach -- to understand what is happening to her and how she might manage it rather than fight it or fly from it. The coping strategies that she devised give hope for other sufferers.

Quick to read - but masses to pick up and work on. This is an honest and courageous personal account of what it is like to be bound up by anxiety attacks and how to overcome them.
I will return to this book again and again - and definitely recommend it to anyone who has been battling with anxiety.

5.0 out of 5 stars 11/10 Spoons- Great Read on Anxiety and the Management Thereof!
Reviewed in the United States on 11 January 2017
After following Jennifer Peacock-Smith's medical journey through EDS via her blog, I was super excited to check out her first book on anxiety. As a fellow EDSer, I think it is safe to say many of us harbor anxieties disproportionate to the problems but still very real possibilities when fear overtakes us.

In "The Lion and the Peacock, Jennifer describes her journey with anxiety and how she's gained better control of the onset of panic attacks through an interesting and effective technique born from her intensive research and real life experience. The author gives many examples of how she's employed the technique and details the process of overcoming the loss of control resulting from anxiety. This book is a great read for encouragement and information on anxiety management.

Jennifer uses interesting analogies to illustrate her experience in a way that rings a bell of familiarity within my own story. I recommend this book for anyone dealing with anxiety, managed or not because Jennifer's tale brings to light the reality of the struggle whilst providing hope that with hard work, anxiety might go into remission. After reading this, I am even more excited for the release of her upcoming book "It's mah Eeds!" This book gets 11/10 Spoons from me!

A quick and easy read. Well written and engaging, Jennifer explores how she struggled with severe anxiety attacks for years, how treatment options failed before finally revealing the technique she used to triumph over her anxiety.

I would have liked to have seen the library books that the author referred to in the book, listed in an appendix.

The sample of the author's upcoming book that was included at the end was beautifully written and I can't wait to read more!

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting insight into the reality of panic attacks
Reviewed in Australia on 20 January 2017
An articulate, engaging and interesting read that helps describe the struggles of people who have panic attacks, and some practical strategies told from a personal perspective. It has helped me to better understand the complexities of chronic panic and I would be happy to recommend the book to others who are seeking support and a strategy for combatting a disabling fear.
