The Freiburg Cabinet: High in the Chateau, amongst the cobwebs and shadows, the Twin waits patiently to be discovered.. A fast paced thriller of pursuit, revenge and salvation. Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 43 ratings

Tarquin Stanhope's cosy London life has taken a sinister turn. He's being hunted and threatened, but by whom and for what?
Those scary letters addressed to a stranger. What do they mean? Why the violence? There's talk of a cabinet... (yes, a French royal cabinet to be precise, from the Palace of Versailles - a piece worth millions) It was English antique dealer, Oliver Clasper, who hatched the plan to make the counterfeit, but the rash fool stole the idea from Zoltan, and now the Russians want their cut. But wait ...
they're tracking the wrong man! Poor Tarquin. An innocent daydreamer who happens to live in the wrong house in the wrong street. They've nailed him once in Covent Garden, but he's just not getting the message. He must flee to France and get to Chateau Clery fast - they're on his trail and they mean business. But the lucky man's been thrown a lifeline. A guardian angel. Constanta's her name. A Romanian gymnast with the body of a panther and a taste for combat ...

Thomas Charrington is a trained cabinet maker and has spent much of his life working in a series of workshops in southern England. He has engaged in numerous furniture making projects using different timbers to create a huge variety of designs. Over the years he has interacted with many knowledgeable and gnarly characters in the various trades, and some of them undoubtedly populate the pages of his first novel.

‘The Freiburg Cabinet’ reflects a curiosity in those specialists who practice the dark arts of deception, whether it be in the copying of priceless cabinets, or the emulating of paintings and drawings by the grand masters and passing them off as genuine.

He is currently nearing the finishing line with his next novel which he hopes to publish early in 2025. This is far removed from the world of cabinets and craftsmanship and instead transports the reader into the shadowy tunnels of the London Underground where something terrifying, yet strangely sad, is at large.

Five stars are for literary masterpieces, which this is not. But it is a lovely, entertaining romp, which kept me turning pages, making me forget that I am not quite well. The ending is clever, leaving space for the next in a series - please do continue! The subject is a fertile field which can lead us throughout Europe. I wish I could help with some research....

I read The Freiburg Cabinet on my recent holiday in France and enjoyed the fact I was actually staying near to where part of the novel is set. Once started I couldn't put this entertaining book down. It's an intriguing tale with lively, colourful characters and a plot that keeps you guessing till the end. I would recommend The Freiburg Cabinet to anyone who enjoys a good, fast paced read, especially if you have an interest in antiques.

I enjoyed this book. It's entertaining and makes good light reading. I found the sex scenes between Lily and Oliver, awful and unnecessary however.
They added nothing to the story.

Forgery is more often associated with paintings, whereas this book is about the forgery of a piece of antique furniture. That might sound a bit dry but no, the author has created a great fast-paced romp, full of entertaining twists and turns, and with an amusing and likeable set of characters. I found it a very enjoyable read. When can we get a TV adaptation? I can see the cast already!!

Really well written, loved the characters, didn’t want to leave them, hoping for a sequel.
This would make a great movie or tv series. Can’t wait for the next one!
