Red Death: A YA Fantasy Adventure Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 81 ratings

Unfairly branded as traitors, Aaliss and her rather odd, younger brother, Wilky, flee Eden and seek refuge in the one place she’d never expect—the land of the Soulless, a medieval world, filled with magic, witches, and where the Red Death plague affects all.

  • WINNER: Pinnacle Book Achievement Award—Best Science Fiction (Dystopian)

~~~
As a Guardian, Aaliss was trained to keep the Soulless away from Eden. Now she’s forced to turn to them for help. Hunted by those in Eden, she strikes a deal with a surprisingly charming prince—the cure for safe passage—but can she trust him?
Only Wilky knows how to make the cure and the king’s time is short, but can they survive the many challenges needed to gather the ingredients?
Aaliss yearns to return home to clear her name, but when her heart tugs her deeper into the world of the Soulless, she questions everything she once believed. Has her soul been taken? Will she and Wilky fall victim to the Red Death, or might they die sooner in the center of a battle that threatens to tear apart the Soulless world?
Or... might Aaliss finally find, against all odds, what her heart has yearned for all along?
    Through this book I got to experience what it's like to live in a different era. But not in an annoyingly historical way. More like in an awesome way!
    There's suspense, highly contageous disease and fighting. Also witches, high priests and kings. Even a little bit of romance. And of course the search for a cure.
    It can be read as a standalone but there are a few loose ends which will be in the sequel.
    I'd definitely recommend this!
    I received a free copy and this is my honest review.
    Great story blending elements of fantasy and sci-fi. Red Death has a relatively big cast of characters (If you’re fine with Thrones, Six of Crows, Illuminae, etc, you’ll have no issues keeping track of who is who but there is a hyperlinked cast list if you do get confused) but they’re all fleshed out and brilliantly conceived. The World of Red Death is well developed, from the Eden compound to the various ‘Soulless’ tribes - its an extra touch of genius to have built up such cultural diversity between each group. Looking forward to getting my paws on the next book, raced through this one!
    As other reviewers have said the beginning can be a bit of a hurdle, but persevere and you will soon get over it and be racing to finish this wonderful book. It did not take long to get to know all the characters, you will find yourself rooting for some of them and hoping that others would come to a sticky end. By the time you get to the climax you realise that this could be our future. I can't wait to find out what lies ahead for Aaliss, Wilky, Eamon and the others, I wonder who we will meet next, perhaps P'mina and Kalhona's mother will put in an appearance, ( I hope the mystery of the witch's dog is also revealed).
    I very much enjoyed this book. It can be confusing at first as each chapter is about a different character but it levels out and you understand how each random person connects and TBH I was hooked straight away. I absolutely loved the basis of the book with the red death and all the different communities and of course the ending was amazing it was interesting, sad, funny, exciting I could go on. I read this book all in one go and I am not normally one to read this genre but thought I would try and and am now very much looking forward to book 2 to find out what happens next. A very good read doesn't disappoint at all.
    This book is 'stuffed' - ie there are active links throughout which take readers to the end of the book.
    I was sent this book when I offered to read and review The Ghost King, the next book in this series. I have never read anything from this author before, but volunteered to read the Ghost King as the cover looked interesting, I had not read any preamble or heard about either book from anyone, and therefore had no preconceived ideas. In fact I would probably not have offered to read it if I had know what it was about, but I would have missed out on so much.
    I got this book three days ago, and apart from working, I just could not put it down. The book is written from several different peoples perspectives, I got to chapter 4 before I found myself peeking at the cast of characters (what an excellent idea) which was really helpful in understanding the relationships and tribes the characters were involved with.
    The book was really well written and the visual imagery in the book was fantastic, I could easily imagine this book being made into a film. The plot was fluid whilst moving across different tribes all the chapters were well connected. I note this book was written for the older teenager population, while i am much older (over 40) and I loved it. I would highly recommend this book and now feel prepared and eager to read the Ghost King.
    Totally scrambled text makes this unreadable even for potentially interesting premise. Even at 99 p it is a complete waste of money in this kindle version.
    5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!
    A very enjoyable tale. The start was slow, but built up to a great adventure. The characters are well developed with just enough detail. You keep turning pages wondering what will happen next. I'm looking forward to book two.
    5.0 out of 5 stars A wild, twisty saga
    Reviewed in the United States on 3 March 2023
    This book starts out fast and keeps up the pace, racing from one exciting adventure to the next as a young, talented warrior girl takes on all kinds of attackers, both human and animal, to protect her brilliant but quiet younger brother who has solved an important social/medical mystery. When they go on the run to escape punishment in a "modern Eden" by going into the Soulless hinterlands, the ride begins! From one adventure to the next, tension builds with each riveting battle, leading to several fights to the death to save the throne and the righteous heirs to it. Throw in some mild romance, some cast-out witches with paranormal powers, a few strange hungry creatures, and Red Death has it all. If you like fantasy novels, you will not be disappointed. This one moves!
    4.0 out of 5 stars Painted with bold strokes
    Reviewed in the United States on 4 June 2019
    The main elements of the story are present: characters with motivations, social divisions, religious tensions, those with tech and those with strange abilities, and a secret some are willing to commit murder for in order to keep secret. The story has good action/fight scenes. There are moments of dire tension. Several characters die. There is good imagery. There are hints of romantic tension, some bits of funny dialog, and some likable characters. The writing is mostly error-free. But, the subtle nuances are lacking. I can’t put my finger on exactly what’s missing other than to say the story seems almost formulaic and not organic.
    Although some of the story elements seem forced, I forced myself to finish reading it. In spite of wanting to try reading something else, the plot was just interesting enough to keep me going to the end. The ending has a good moment and then is awkward. I had to reread the last sentence because it was poorly written. “Hunh?“ Is not the last impression a writer should leave in the reader’s head.
    5.0 out of 5 stars You are drawn into the book from the beginning!
    Reviewed in the United States on 9 December 2016
    This is the first time I have read this genre and I now have a new favorite series to follow. I didn't know exactly what to expect but the twists and turns and injustice throughout holds your interest. Aaliss must take her brother Wilky and run! They must save their lives and leave Eden to escape danger because her brother found a cure for the Red Death. But the High Priest of Eden doesn't want it to get out! So the adventure begins. This is the first book in the series and I will definitely follow this series since I am totally intrigued how some things left undone get resolved. The descriptions are incredible making the scenes visible in the minds eye. Can the kids get the cure out for the Red Death? This book is a fun must read!
    I really enjoyed this book. When I first downloaded the Red Death I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, but as I continued to read the story grew on me and I couldn't put it down. I recommend this as a must read.
