Reginald Bones: Book 1 of 6 Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 228 ratings

He's a man with two personalities-- Reginald --the socialite, and Bones-- the psycho.

Reginald is content to keep Bones off of death row. Happy to bury bodies in the graveyard they own, day in and day out. It's a morbid business to run, but at least they're on the noble side of death.

It all goes to hell when Reginald breaks one simple rule and falls for a grieving woman at the graveyard. Then Bones breaks the next simple rrule--he gives an inch to accommodate a desperate Reginald.

One taste is all it takes. One hour of proving to Reginald this woman is bad news. Now she's tied up in their basement for a little play-date and Bones is ready to step in and devour her whole.

I was very intrigued about this set of books as there has been a great deal of talk about them in the book circles that I follow and I really wanted to see for myself what all the Oohing and Aahing was all about.

Initially I was getting a bit of whiplash switching between Reginald and Bones as they are two very different guys that co-exist inside the same body, once I got few chapters in to the book I found my pace and could easily follow.

Bones who owns the body is a VERY colourful character indeed. He’s reclusive, dark, gritty, crude, cynical, caustically sarcastic and yep a sadist. He’s a tattooed hulk of a man whose idea of a good time is digging record numbers of graves. But funnily you can’t help but love him as there is a grouchy vulnerable element to him which is adorable.

Reginald is the other side of the coin, the light to Bones darkness, forthright, gentle, patient, optimistic, protecting, logical, methodical and calming. He arrived in the body ten years previous, filling the role of being brave for Bones, for a reason yet to become known.

The two identities come together to provide the ideal package in one body, giving the reader the best of both worlds, and indeed every woman’s dream (Inserting a big sigh and gooey eyes,) and an element of humor when they start fighting.

So 5 years in self-imposed isolation at the family grave yard, suits Bones to a T but Reginald is left patiently and wistfully yearning for more. And that something more comes in the shape of Winter, another stormy bundle but again quite lovable and endearing.

These three coming together make for some very intensely passionate scenes. That coupled with a dark story line to hold the readers interest and keep them wondering, makes it an intense read that I will be following up with book 2 and yes it did live up to all expectations (wink)

Maybe death doesn't have to be the end .... maybe death could be just the beginning ... maybe, just maybe, it can save you ... be prepared to be amazed, hold on tight, it's a fast ride !

Everyone has that inner voice, we all have that voice in the back of our mind, the part of us that offers countenance to our inner thoughts and musings and sometimes we listen to that voice to let it guide us.

Reginald Bones is no different, he has an inner voice it offers no countenance. Bones, the voice at direct odds with him, in every way. Pulling from him, everything he will not allow and yet Bones cannot be denied, he is an intuitive soul.

Reggie is a man sheltered from the normality of life and yet he deals with the most harshest of our emotional spectrum. Death ... producing the ultimate emotion, the ultimate sadness, stripping us bare, revealing our need.

Winter Rose ... captured in a life she detests, doing things that she hates, for the love of her brother, the love that keeps her returning to his soul, where upon we encounter the revelation of the connection between her and her brothers death. Exposed, we come to understand the vile pain she deserves, deserving the bitter side of life, the wretched shadows of her soul pull her ever deeper and closer to Reggie or would that be closer to Bones ?

This clever concept of the voice within being able to take primary lead and yet take a back seat at other times is quite genius in this psychological thriller. Can Iove grow from the darkness within ? from the deepest recesses of our mind ? Do we need to be broken to understand the fractured ? To accept, that, which once divides us actually binds us ? This story reaches into the mind and raises many questions. An intense read, which brings you MORE of the inner mind of Lucian Bane.

    3.5 Confusing stars.
Well this was a difficult read for me. Very confusing and strange in the beginning until the picture forms around the halfway mark of the book and then a light-bulb moment. At which point you are already invested and must read the rest to determine where the story is going.

In all fairness it's a bit hard to give much about the story in this review without making it a spoiler filled one. Suffice to say the characters POV's in this are very different and individual. The male leads are very different and yet the same, one is dark and the other light. One has found the woman who comes to their graveyard to be very interesting and wants to meet her and touch her, while the other looks at her and see the personification of wicked.

Winter Rose is looking for redemption, her day job is nothing to write home about, but the man she watches in the graveyard where she visits her brother intrigues her. She looks at him and yearns. When she discovers the truth of the two, her reaction triggers a storm and we wait for the fallout.

    Be warned cliffhanger inbound.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MIND-BLOWING, MUST READ STORY THAT DESERVES FAR MORE THAN 5 STARS!

Reading this book and afterwards reminded me so much of how it feels when you wind up in an unexpected place. Here's my take on such an experience.

From the ski lift looking down, the mountain is inviting. A breathtaking sight to behold. Your exit off the chair lift is nothing remarkable as the turn is made toward the slopes. One is blue for intermediate level. And the other, a black diamond for a far more skilled skier than you are. A sudden gust of wind stirs the snow. You look up. The gray clouds promising an imminent arrival of the pristine powder—something so unique and beautiful formed in something so dark and foreboding.

Busy clearing your goggles, you’ve missed the fork you were supposed to take. Unaware that you have launched yourself right on to the expert run you have no business being on. The slope drops down and it becomes apparent the error that has been made. You are unprepared, yet determined to see your way down. Except the next big drop sends you flying and you find yourself racing out of control.
The self-talk begins with, “Go across the mountain, not down.” A simple thing you were taught as a beginner.

Easier said than done as you dodge one tree after another at breakneck speed, praying hard you just make it down in one piece. You manage to gain some control once you pass the trees, thinking it may not be as bad as you thought. Another steep drop and now your barreling straight down the face of the mountain. You start to move side to side using the ski’s edges the way you remembered, not gracefully, by no means expertly like the run is designed for. Pride fills you until you see it: The boulder others have used as a jump. Avoidance is key, but you end up hitting it. Now you’re soaring and wondering if you’ll ever live through it. The landing is clumsy at best, but you did it.

You’re at the bottom, heart hammering so hard you’re sure it’ll launch from your chest like you just did on that jump. You come to a stop, thankful you survived, and look back up. Two different runs on the same mountain. And as you watch the snow storm blow in, you observe how one is dark and one is light.

A mind-blowing, must read story that deserves far more than five stars. Take a bow, Mr. Bane. BRAVO!

Beautifully and sympathetically written. This is one of the most unputdownable books I have read for a while.
