Emily Klein doesn’t know she has killed her husband until the day of his funeral.

At first, signs point to a tragic accident. Yet, as Emily pieces together the events leading up to the accident and her own memory loss, she begins to suspect that her husband’s death may have been the result of more than a terrible twist of fate…

But the accident is only the beginning. Because while Emily’s physical scars will heal, the trauma of the accident has awakened old ghosts. She hears strange sounds, catches things that can’t possibly be there in the corner of her eye… Before long, everywhere she looks, she seems to see her husband.

Emily doesn't know who to believe or who she can turn to. And suddenly, she finds herself asking the most dangerous question of all:

Can she really trust herself?

MoMo’s Book Diary recommends this intriguing debut thriller as a 5 star read!!!!!
This captivating domestic thriller had me fascinated from the opening page. There were so many questions which really got my mind working.  I couldn’t read fast enough – page turning at an alarming rate… Trying to guess what comes next… the tension was unbearable. This is a tense read with complex emotionally developed characters which will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final page.

Emily wakes in hospital on the day of her husband’s funeral. She has survived the car crash in which he died – and she was driving. Her memory isn’t clear on the moments just before the accident and as that returns, so do traumas from her earlier life. Someone is trying to convince her that her husband is still alive. She doesn’t know if she can trust her friends, her family, or even herself. The accident is being investigated by the police but when she fears her house in being invaded by a stranger, she doesn’t want to tell the police as she’s keen to draw attention away from the problems of her early life. She’s in a bind and it’s easy to sympathise with her.

This is a nicely paced book in which we range back and forth between Emily’s teen years, the more recent past and current times. I enjoyed the way the story unfolded. It became obvious to me before the end who was responsible but the whys and wherefores were still to be explained. A very enjoyable read.

Easy flowing read but a few too many clues as to "who dunnit", I had guessed rather early on who, why and partly how, it was a bit of a no brainer, but it was still fun to read through to the end and have things confirmed and the loose ends tied up. I think a few more red herrings thrown in might have been good.

Loved this! From the first intriguing line to the shocking denouement that had me wide-eyed with amazement, THOSE WHO LIE unfolds like a Chinese puzzle. Intricate, layered, it's a psychological thriller with clues drip-fed through the pages, meaning you can't put it down. One of those reads that keeps you up late, reading 'just one more chapter'.

Emily Klein wakes up in hospital on the day of her husband's funeral, with no idea what happened, or even that she is the one who killed him. She has total amnesia of the event, so is horrified as she learns what has happened. It's hard to describe the unfolding of the story without giving away too much, but suffice it to say that children, family and friends all get dragged into Emily's nightmare, the crescendo-style plot rising to an incredible, mind-blowing conclusion.

    Domestic noir at its best!

Emily Klein doesn't know her husband Greg is dead until the day of the funeral. From her hospital bed, she doesn't yet know that she killed him. Once home and beginning to recover from the dreadful car crash, she sees her husband at a distance, in coffee shops, around town and in his car, yet when she gets home the car is on the drive. Posts appear on his Facebook account and she begins to get text messages from him, it can only be him as he's the only one who called her Alice when her name is Emily. She thinks she's losing her mind and the reader is reminded of her past when she was in a mental institution after killing her father.

The book switches back to her childhood home with her sister and their abusive father. We get an idea of Emily's mental state and the reason behind her spell in a mental institution. Emily's sister is key throughout the story giving support when she's just lost her husband. Most of the story is in present day, just a few switches to childhood as memories resurface.

Emily's friends are all under suspicion of imitating Greg and she doesn't know who to trust or believe. There are several twists and jaw-drops before all lies are revealed and unravelled at the end.

Emily Klein doesn't know her husband is dead until the day of his funeral...
This alone was enough for the hairs on my arms to stand on end. As I delved further into the book, I was blown away by the opening few chapters, which blew the story wide open. Jeffrey certainly set out her stall from that moment on, and the story unfolded piece by piece, leaving me hungry for more with each turn of the page.
Emily Klien is a likeable character, and I felt for her throughout. It became apparent early on that somebody was messing with her mind, or was it her mind that was the problem? I suspected everyone, and trusted nobody. Was her husband even dead?
This book is a cleverly written debut, perfect for readers who like their books drenched in mystery and suspicion. I cannot wait for what this author has up her sleeve next!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed!!!!

    My Review:
Enjoyed!!!! That ending shocked me and made me speechless. I want to start off by saying that this author is one of my favorites and I finally completed reading every single book she has ever written. With that being said, I can definitely tell that this was her first book for so many different reasons. I won’t get into too much detail with it but will say that she has evolved very much as a writer from this book to her last book published. Now let’s talk about this fabulous read. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book as the blurb didn’t give too much away. In my opinion that was a good thing. I did find some parts of the book hard to read. This author dealt with a few sensitive topics but did it in a way that was soft and gentle. Once I got past those parts I would have to say that I really liked this one. This book had it all in my opinion. It had a good plot that kept you intrigued. It had characters that were good but there were also some that were very evil. Then you had an ending that you never would have seen coming in a million years. To me that is all you need in a book. I would definitely recommend this author and this book. I can’t wait for her next book and hopefully I won’t be waiting too long. I am a very impatient person.

In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 4 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️

4.0 out of 5 stars Deliciously dark and twisty...
Reviewed in Australia on 27 September 2017
This is quite a unique story and I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did, especially as it started off a little frustrating. Deliciously dark and twisty. This story was fast paced and suspenseful with more questions than answers until the exciting finale!

Emily wakes up in the hospital with two police officers, she has no idea why she's there. She quickly learns that she's been in a car accident. While her injuries are painful, they aren't life-threatening. Her husband isn't as lucky - he's dead. She was driving, and reportedly suddenly veered off the road which led to the accident. She can't remember exactly why... which is a problem.

The book jumps back and forth from past to present, including details about childhood abuse and the subsequent murder of her father. Strange things begin to happen in her house. Things vanish and then reappear. She gets messages from Greg's phone and Facebook. Is he somehow still alive, or is someone playing a horrible trick on her? Or perhaps her dark past has led to a mental breakdown and she's imagining things... one thing is for sure: as things escalate, she must figure it out... because it's starting to look like she's in danger.

We are told everything, just as it unfolds. The reader is the witness. There's panic and an eagerness to figure things out, to escape the tension and secrecy. I really enjoyed this book... 4.5 Stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Reminds me of "Hitchcock"
Reviewed in Canada on 6 January 2018
This story reminded me of some of the Hitchcock movies that I have enjoyed so much. The heroine Emily has experienced a lot of trauma in her life from the time that she was a child - an abusive father, an alcoholic mother and some time spent in a mental health facility. Her older sister has been her guardian and her refuge both as a child and later when Emily loses her husband in a car accident while she was driving. The events pick up from this point interweaving Emily's past memories with triggers that she experiences as she tries to overcome her guilt. The plot builds slowly as Emily struggles to understand what happened and how present events seem tied to her past. Who can she trust? What is really happening? It is a gripping story from beginning to end.
