A great introduction to this subject and a starting point if you wish to go deeper. Would've got 5 stars had it not been for some typos.

After reading Mary Higgins Clark’s “The Anastasia Syndrome” that includes references to the English Civil Wars and Kings Charles I and II, I decided to read the 51-page Hourly History on this subject and learn more about it. I am very pleased with this short account that touches on all the important events.
It started because of over taxation and the insistence of the kings that God gave them the absolute power to do with their citizens as they choose. While there were always royal problems, King James I assumed the crown in 1603 and united England, Ireland, and Scotland for the first time despite each being very different and each having as a principle religion a different religion than the other two. James wanted more power than Parliament gave him and more taxes. He was dictatorial and persecuted the Catholics despite promising not to do it.
His son Charles the first became king in 1625 with the same attitude and he had severe problems with Parliament. The first civil war, his war with Parliament, was in 1642-1646. The second war was in 1648 when Charles I was executed by Parliament. His son Charles II became king in 1649 with the third war from 1649 to 1651 when England established a Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell, changed the English constitution and the role of monarchy and Parliament. Charles II then resumed the role as king. All told over 800,000 people died in these wars.

Easy read but no references for reading. I do not have a lot of knowledge of this conflict so the book was interesting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Relatively concise and a very quick read, errors noted should be corrected

I really like the English Civil War: A History From Beginning to End butt I noted two glaring errors. the author wrote " this persecution continued throughout the 16th century into the reign of the next monarch, Henry's daughter Queen Elizabeth I, who was herself a committed Protestant", Queen Mary I of England was the next monarch not Queen Elizabeth. The second error is near the end of the book " addressing a group of men gathered around the scaffolding he would be hanged from, Charles said", one paragraph later " Charles I was beheaded". there may be other errors that I did not observe. Still I found this e-book to be most informative for a short read. This book would be good has an introduction to the English Civil War.
