The Reluctant Trader: A fast-paced political thriller Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 234 ratings

A story of political ambition, greed, love and revenge, The Reluctant Trader is a fast-paced thriller following fictional events in just one week at the end of January 2016, the start of what, by any yardstick, was an extraordinary year in British politics.

When disgraced former soldier, Adam Fraser, goes to work for well-connected tax-exile and billionaire, Ricky Al-Shawabi, as an oil trader, he finds himself at the centre of a British operation trying to expose Al-Shawabi as a criminal tax evader. However, the tentacles of Al-Shawabi’s operation reach high into the British political system. Before he realises it, Fraser is embroiled in Ricky’s deadliest deal yet: supplying laundered money to ISIS in Iraq. When the British authorities threaten to shut down the whole operation, little does anyone realise what the political repercussions are likely to be in Downing Street.

This fast-paced political mystery is set in London, Monaco and Iraq. It provides a fictional backstory behind some of the extraordinary events that shaped British politics in 2016.

About the Author

David Robinson was a partner and chief operating officer in a global accounting firm, and latterly held the same role in a global law firm. It took him 36 years and several million air miles to do, arguably, what he should have done several years earlier: give up the day job and focus on a lifelong ambition to write thrillers. Page-turners. Action and adventure stories with twists and turns right to the very last page. With few parts of the world that David has not seen first-hand, he uses his personal knowledge, connections and a professional interest in technology to craft fast-paced thrillers that are very much set in the real world. Locations that he knows personally. Present-day plotlines that try to be as credible and true to life as possible. Fictional backstories to events currently in the public eye. David lives with his wife close to the city of Cambridge, England. Together they support several local charities, including the world-renowned Cambridge Union debating society where David is a trustee. For many years before COVID 19, I was a business leader: always out and about meeting people, travelling the world regularly. Endless plane and train journeys provided ample time for reflection. In between work, I would read books and plan for a different life.

These days, despite lockdown, I am happy to be grounded, living my new life as an independent author. Working from home and living the dream. Writing thrillers, the sort of books I always hankered after on yet another long-haul flight. Fast-paced, contemporary page-turners – with plenty of twists and action along the way. Books about topical subjects that I love researching.

Most of the time, when I’m not researching a new book, my wife and I live in England, close to the fabulous city of Cambridge. The walks are fantastic, the bike rides not too challenging and the streets full of interesting and inspiring people.

I thoroughly enjoyed this action packed, past paced thriller set amongst the world of political intrigue and treachery. It is well written, lucid, intelligent, and thoroughly researched. It's characters and locations are authentic, well drawn and accurately researched. I would highly recommend it and our staff book club are all reading it with alacrity. Many of them find it a cross between " The Night Manager" and Dan Brown!! David gets better with each book, so do put it down on your Christmas lift.

I loved this book. It ends up with numerous people having side conversations or investigations that criss cross back on each other (trying not to give anything away) and all wraps up nicely in the end (which is always nice).

Mix of Government shenanigans, MI5, MI6, the NCA and a wealthy dodgy character that can "fix anything". The back scenes with the Civil servants reminded me the great Yes, Minister (and Yes, Prime Minister) series.

It's all fairly plausible, if sometimes a little too neatly wrapped up, but great fun. I don't often dole out my 5* reviews to books but, this one, I'd happily read again. Highly recommended.

Having previously enjoyed the Dossier and the Gambit, this is another fast paced yet vividly topical and cleverly written thriller from David Robinson, with plenty of political intrigue and well thought out and wholly believable characters. A thoroughly enjoyable read from a writer who is clearly worthy of the best-seller list. More please!

Fast paced thriller with interesting locations and characters. Scarily believable. I liked Adam Fraser as a character and found him compelling. Some of the other characters were less well rounded but this is a female perspective! Looking forward to reading the next one.

Another great read from David N Robinson with The Reluctant Trader keeping the reader engaged throughout the book and ending with an unexpected ending to ensure this 10 out of 10 review!

Well written story. I have given it only three stars because there are a number of implausible coincidences which form major parts of the plot.
  • Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 November 2016
I have to say that I enjoyed this book, enjoyed it a lot actually. OK, some similarities to The Night Manager, and the politicians all seemed recognisable, but the plot had some good twists and turns. I read it on the way to and from work, and it made me look forward to the journey.
It is certainly a topical plot, with both political and big business strands, and set in beautiful locations.
If I was to have any minor quibbles then perhaps the characterisation of some of the lesser players could have been better, but if Adam Fraser returns to action then I would be very happy!

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting triller by a new author
Reviewed in the United States on 26 April 2017
This is an intriguing triller with lots of action and sub-plots. Adam, the main character, is a former soldier who ventures into a sub-culture of high finance, trading and political influence activities designed to protect the participants identities. There are lots of secrets in the world he has entered. But Adam has a secret of his own but that he keeps from the reader until the closing chapter.

The author and I were associates in his prior work life before writing. I am very impressed with the creativity and writing style. I enjoyed the book very much.
