About the author

Perfect life? Not a bit! Fiona Gibson's much loved novels are about the messiness of everyday life, when you don't have it all sorted - even at 40, 50 and beyond. To make matters worse, wine makes you sweat like a horse now! Which seems deeply unfair. Marriage wobbles, maddening teenagers and second-chance love - they're all there in Fiona's hilariously relatable stories.
Her newest novel, The Full Nest, is out now. And you can pre-order The Woman Who Got Her Spark Back (out on June 7!).
Fiona started her writing life working on teen magazines Jackie and Just Seventeen. She went on to edit More! magazine, where she invented the infamous Position of the Fortnight. It remains her career highlight.
These days Fiona lives in Glasgow with her husband, where she writes her books full-time and tries to ignore the housework. Her three grown up children have all flown the nest.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 May 2017This is a wonderful feel good story that had been totally submerged. I am a big fan of Fiona's and I think it's possibly her best yet. This book will appeal to women like me: in their 40s and 50s, single mothers struggling on the dating scene with a disastrous record in relationships! I could totally relate to the lead character Lorrie and really rooted for her, wanting her to find happiness. I felt sad when it ended because I really looked forward to putting my feet up to read this!
There were some great twists: the trip to Nice ended in a different way to how I thought it would and the scene as Antoine sits on the settee drinking coffee and reading newspapers that morning took an interesting and clever twist that was unexpected. I liked the way the sex scene and scene after were crafted.
The writing is crisp, effortless, well crafted and fresh. There were lots of different ways of saying the same thing: e.g. walking becomes bowls over, scamper, crawl, clatter, bettles, whisks, tumbles, etc. The sex and romantic scenes feel realistic and sensous. There is also plenty of humour woven through the story - for instance the love bite on Stu's neck was hilarious.
On a down note I didn't like Stu as a potential boyfriend. I couldn't get an idea in my mind of what he was like. He seemed to feminine and not career minded or a high earner! Antoine was a much more desirable guy! Fiona your readers want characters to end up with the most desirable of men - high earners, generous, romantic, good looking and attentive - the sort of men we can't seem to get in real life!!
Well done Fiona and can't wait for your next book!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 August 2018Lorrie is a wonderful character. She has two grown up children and is trying the dating scene again which doesn't seem to be going terribly well. Being in my forties also, there was a lot that I could relate to in Lorrie's life. Apart from the dating I should add. Having read Lorrie's dating disaster's, I don't think I would be in any hurry to join it if I ever found myself single again.
There are lots of fabulous characters throughout the story. I really liked Lorrie's lodger for one. I mean who wouldn't love a lodger that can cook and bake? I loved how comfortable the pair are together and they reminded me very much of a couple that have been married for years.
This isn't just a romance novel. Yes there is love in it but it's also about being grown up and having to make decisions. Much harder for Lorrie, when her children arn't that interested in what's going on in her life and she has a mother who is wrapped up in her own world. I really enjoyed reading of her work life and what it's like working behind a make up counter. Certainly makes for some interesting reading.
The Woman Who Met Her Match is a light hearted and feel good read that I struggled to put down. I really enjoyed my first introduction to this authors work and look forward to reading more by her. A highly entertaining and fun read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 May 2024Really enjoyed this Fiona Gibson book. It was funny and entertaining. The characters were fabulous. Highly recommended for a enjoyable read
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 June 2018I normally love Fiona Gibson's books but I was left feeling distinctly underwhelmed by this one and I can't really put my finger on why - well, that isn't strictly true. I spent most of the book mentally screaming at Lorrie to stop ignoring what was right under her nose and plain to those of us reading this tale and just get on with the business of loving the right man. All this faffing about and mooning over her teenage crush doesn't sit well on a middleaged woman and I just wanted to shake her. Fortunately she saw sense in the end.
My other issue with it was the whole employment thing. I have no issue with her working on a beauty counter. I have no issue with her trepidation when the company is taken over by a large corporation and the way they are expected to work is changed. What I do have issues with are the seemingly seamless way she scuppers their plans and then just happens to have a good relationship with the two elderly women who sold the company who (despite being in their late 70s) are starting a new venture and just so happen to offer her a job for when they open. Definitely all felt too contrived and unrealistic.
There are moments of humour in the book. Especially the descriptions of her handful of dates from datemylovelymum.com. I also found her relationship with her mother quite amusing - there's something about mothers that turn us all back in to spotty 13 year olds shuffling our feet and hanging our head. Yes, her mother is overbearing but there is a real sense that she is doing her best for Lorrie, even if it doesn't always come across that way. Lorrie's relationship with her teenage children is also a refreshingly good one with them all exasperating each other in the way only family can.
The relationship with the enigmatic Antoine is sweet in the flashback to 16 year old Lorrie, strangely chaste and romantic cloaked as it is in the rose tinted hues of remembrance. When she meets up with him again he is all that she remembered and, sadly, he is so much more. You never really become invested in Lorrie pairing off with her Frenchman and I did find him quite offputting as a character and really couldn't see what she saw in him.
Not one of Ms Gibson's finest but it did entertain in places and, on the whole, felt relatively realistic. A good read for long lazy afternoons when all you need is a long, cool drink and some non-taxing distraction.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 June 2018Terrific fun! I dropped a star because the ending is very predictable - once the full cast is in place, you know who Lorrie will end up with - but it was fun getting to the ending (and sometimes predictable is comforting - it's good that things work out just as they should). The writing is tight and funny, and the characters well-drawn and believable. An excellent read for relaxation.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but definitely not a laugh out loud book
The title is completely misleading. The "laug out loud" in the title is oubviously only a marketing trick, because there is absolutely nothing funny about this book.
It is about the daily life of a widowed make-up saleswoman who meets a holiday crush from her youth again, right at the time she is pushed out of her job after a hostile take-over of the company employing her. I won't give any more spoilers, because the book is well written. I couldn't care less about the daily life of a make-up seller, and the storyline isn't anything spectacular. But I nonetheless kept on reading, and the characters are very realistic.
But if you expect a funny book, this one certainly isn't ! It's not even Without this false title I would have given the book 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful 4.5 read.
Lorrie, the heroine, was a 46 year old single woman with two teen-aged children. The children (ages 15 and 17,) wrote her profile and submitted it to on-line dating site. Her children thought it was high time she "got on with her life". Seven years earlier, her partner (and father of her children,) had died instantly in a car accident.
I was rooting for Lorrie the entire book. The dating disasters were hilarious. Her first love from 30 years earlier, when she was a summer exchange student in France, contacted her through Facebook. Would he become the love of her life? Her work life was described well and realistically. She lived her life with grace and a hopeful outlook despite being a woman who loved to eat, hated exercise and was substantial. The author wrote such funny real-life situations. I devoured the book wondering how it would end.
