'This brilliantly written and captivating story instantly drew us in and refused to let go. Fresh, funny and utterly fabulous, it’s the perfect holiday read'

Meet the hilarious and surprising residents of number 24 in the warm, witty and wonderful novel from bestselling author Juliet Ashton, author of The Sunday Lunch Club.

When your marriage falls apart, the last place you'd want your husband to move to is downstairs. Unfortunately for
Sarah, up in the eaves at number 24, her ex-husband now lives one floor beneath her with his new wife. Their happiness floats up through the floorboards, taunting her.

A child psychologist, Sarah has picked up great sadness from the little girl,
Una, who lives with her careworn mother three floors below, but is Sarah emotionally equipped to reach out?

The Spring brings a new couple to the house.
Jane and Tom's zest for life revives the flagging spirits, and Sarah can't deny the instant attraction to handsome Tom. Having seen at first hand what infidelity does to people, she'll never act on it ... but the air fizzes with potential.

The sunshine doesn't reach every corner of number 24, however. Elderly
Mavis, tucked away in the basement, has kept the world at bay for decades. She's about to find out that she can't hide forever.

Juliet Ashton weaves a story of love, friendship and community that will move you to laughter and to tears.
Think Cold Feet meets David Nicholls, with a dash of the joy of Jill Mansell added for good measure.

I think we all know people like these characters! The book was well written and the plot twists were unexpected but kept me hooked. I loved how all the characters stories were told and I loved them all individually. I would recommend to anyone who can read!!!!!

Every now and then I do like reading a nice easy book with good characters and story line that isn't too taxing, and The Woman at Number 24 fits this criteria perfectly.  The plot follows the main character, Sarah, as she comes to terms with the loss of her marriage and her crisis in her belief of herself as a child psychologist.  Through her relationship with the other residents we are privy to her thoughts and feelings as she tries to come to terms with her situation.  Anyone would feel for her living in the flat above her ex and his new wife, especially when that ex is pompous, and a lothario who plays on Sarah's vunrability.  The plot is fast paced, and I really enjoyed the Chinese proverbs at the start of each chapter.  Juliet Ashton's prose is fluid and relaxed, like the plot itself, which makes the book enjoyable to read.

Juliet Ashton introduces us to a wonderful and diverse set of characters for the reader to engage with.  Mavis, in the basement, is know for being a grumpy and quite horrible character, however during the book we see a different side to her.  She also has a secret that turns the story on its head.  Jane and Tom become close friends to Sarah, and in Tom's case maybe a bit too friendly putting Sarah in a difficult position.  There introduction to the house is the catalyst for the change in the residents.  In Una Sarah sees herself as a child, she too was caught up in the detritus of her parents divorce, but is having doubts about her ability.  What really comes through from all the characters is their friendship and loyalty to each other, they are very protective over each other, and the house.

The Woman at Number 24 is a beautiful book, and should not be taken at face value.  You may think you know this story but you don't, there are quite a few twists and turns that change the direction of the story and the characters themselves.  It encompasses a range of emotions, sadness, empathy and a lot of humour to keep you entertained.  A great feel good novel.

Living inside the walls of number 24 are an eclectic mix of personalities, each with their own problems, heartbreaks and multiple secrets many would like to keep hidden!

Divided into flats, the house is home to Sarah, living right at the top of the house. Once married to Leo, she now finds herself alone after discovering his affair with the neighbour downstairs. Thinking it would all blow over and she'd carry on with her marriage, she was sorely mistaken when he moved out and divorced her to move in and marry the neighbour. Now living uncomfortably side by side she still harbours romantic feelings of a reconciliation some day.

Living in the bowels of the house is Mavis. Mavis is the miserable, cantankerous sister of the famous novelist Zelda Bennison. When Zelda comes to stay with Mavis, the other residents are unaware it is to see out her days as illness overcomes her.

Following the funeral, Mavis takes on a new persona and decides her life should be lived and that she should be kinder to people. And so an unlikely friendship between Sarah and Mavis begins.

Meanwhile, young Una, another resident living with her mother is suffering from her own personal heartache after her parents split and continue to war between themselves. Not realising that the reason their daughter no longer speaks has any connection to their bitter break up.

Being a child psychologist, Sarah decides she must help the child find her voice, and with the help of Mavis, Tom and other residents they attempt to help Una discover her voice.

This is a charming novel full of likeable characters, including little Mikey, the one eyed baby hedgehog that the gang also take under their wing. This book is the perfect book to while away a few hours with and with leave you charmed, I'm sure.

The Woman at No. 24" by Juliet Ashton is a book that left me with mixed feelings and ultimately deserves a three-star rating in my opinion. While it had some moments of charm and intrigue, there were several aspects that fell short of my expectations.
Firstly, the novel presents a diverse cast of characters living in a single apartment building, which promised to be an engaging exploration of their lives and interconnected stories. However, I found it challenging to connect with some of these characters on a deeper level. While a few were well-developed and relatable, others felt underdeveloped or stereotypical, leaving me with a sense of detachment from their individual journeys.
Additionally, the pacing of the story was inconsistent. At times, the narrative flowed smoothly, drawing me into the lives of the residents of No. 24 with its everyday dramas and secrets. However, there were instances where the plot seemed to meander without clear direction, leading to moments of frustration where I hoped for more cohesion in the storytelling.
Furthermore, I found the plot twists and revelations to be somewhat predictable. As a reader who enjoys unexpected surprises, I felt that the story's outcomes were foreshadowed too clearly, which diminished the element of suspense that I typically seek in a novel.
On a positive note, Juliet Ashton's writing style is engaging and easy to read. Her prose is descriptive and evocative, allowing readers to visualise the apartment building and its eclectic residents. The sense of community and the depiction of the building as a character in itself added a unique and enjoyable dimension to the narrative.
In conclusion, "The Woman at No. 24" by Juliet Ashton is a novel with moments of charm and a compelling premise, but it fell short in terms of character development, pacing, and plot twists. While it may resonate with readers who enjoy character-driven stories set in close-knit communities, it didn't fully captivate me.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. All the characters at #24 were memorable and unique. The plot prooves that everyone is unique, and that no one needs to live on their own island. We can share, love, and be ourselves but discover our desire to make a house a home.
