Dark Siren (Half-Lich Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 304 ratings

He's the last person she wants to see, but the only one who can help. The hunt is on.

Supernatural bounty hunter Alice Werner loves her job. She gets paid the big bucks to take down her targets and doesn't ask her clients too many questions as long as the money's good. But when a girl goes missing in a case that feels all too familiar, Alice can't help but act.

Concern for the girl's safety draws her quickly into danger. Compassion keeps her involved when the stakes begin to rise. Desperation forces her to call on an old flame for help.

Despite their unfinished past, Alice and Isaac Moreau - a prominent Mage - must work together to save the girl.

When clues reveal more than meets the eye, Alice must face her deepest fears and confront demons from her past to protect the victim, and herself, from a fate worse than death.

Dark Siren is the first book of the Half-Lich Urban Fantasy series, a collection of tales set in the grim, unforgiving metropolis of Ashwood. This is a supernatural thriller like no other. If you like mysterious supernatural creatures, fast-paced suspense, and conflict-ridden romance, then you'll love this.

It will be very interesting to see how this series develops. The heroine has been left weaponless and therefore unable to continue her work. The new city looks to be an entertaining environment, plus the character count is expanding to ensure that a wide range of situations will occur.

The stubbornness of the heroine in this story is refreshing, where a haunted woman, Alice, struggles to keep to terms with her own nature. This is a truly imaginative story that keeps on developing in the magical essence. As I neared the climax of the story it became increasingly harder to put the book down.

The start is something out of the best horror movie out there. Very dark brooding and spooky. You really feel the tension ratchet up with Nate and Emily's part in the story.
Then it comes to Alice's part of in all this. Alice is a bounty hunter of all things that go bump in the night. Her weapon of choice? An old Polaroid camera called Trapper. Very creative thinking.
I can't help but think there was something lacking. It felt a little lost to me. I found myself wading through bits information that was repeated almost like and infill. I stuck with the story with the hope of it picking up but there were parts that made me wonder how the entities got back to where they came from - the reflection - if they had to have come through a portal to begin with. They just seemed to vanish when they escaped from the chest of souls. Then they reappear later in the final part of the book only to have come back through a portal again. I'm wondering if I missed something somewhere?
It's an ok book. Not sure if I will read the next in the series yet.

Struggled with the first chapter, as not sure where it was taking me or if I wanted to continue. Glad I did, the story and characters developed very nicely. Interesting perspective on paranormal stories and magic. Look forward to reading the next two and others by these authors. The

A dark fantasy novel, not one for those who don't like horror related things. A love interest thrown in along with magic and soul eating. Not one to read on a dark night!

I loved the book from the start, especially the cinema scenario, it had me reaching for a cushion to hide behind.

The characters are really well written and it is a book that will have hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical Siren!

Its often the case that we judge books by their covers, both literally and metaphorically. With such outstanding cover art as that visaged here, it was a pleasant experience to see my expectations pan out herein! The captivating artwork of the 'cover' on the outside is more than matched by the enthralling and suspenseful plot and writing style(s) of the inside. Indeed its hard to distinguish the collaborative efforts of the authors, their individual styles meshing seamlessly, so that for all intents and purposes, you'd expect to find upon closure that a single author was involved, had you not already been made aware by the cover that two individual writers contributed.

Whilst being undoubtedly a fulfilling and complete novel by itself, its both standalone enjoyment and an exciting opening to chronicle concepts and potential which matches the authors prophetic statements at the rear of the book; which announce their plans to spend, and I quote, "a very long time" developing. The unique introduction of a little known type of supe via the main heroine character, Alice, was a pleasant surprise: whilst having made certain predictions regarding race given the title of the book, it was both enlightening and rewarding to find I'd made some incorrect assumptions about content having taken a literal approach to the title. The relationship is there in a roundabout kind of way, but only upon completion is it revealed in its entirety. The very apt and utilitarian chapter names become more and more intriguing the further progress, an effect rarely seen done so well for this reader/reviewer. Do be sure however to have a good allotment of time up your sleeves once you come to start reading, as like any truly rewarding reading experience, once you start you won't want to stop.

An excellent supernatural suspense, I've already followed the link to pre-order the second novel in the series - set for release end August. A definite 5 star [☆☆☆☆☆] novel and must read inclusion in any and good library!

5.0 out of 5 stars Even though I was aware it set the scene (much like a supernatural/criminal tv series does)
Reviewed in the United States on 30 July 2016
The prelude to the story felt a bit slow. Emily and Nate allow a horrific evil to interact with the real world causing a set of events to unfold. Even though I was aware it set the scene (much like a supernatural/criminal tv series does), it took me 3 days to read those first few pages as the writing didn't feel compelling enough. However ....

The moment I hit chapter one and I'm thrown into the protagonist's world, the pace of writing picks up, and it hooks me further with each page I read. I start to believe in this world that the author creates and can visualise it so clearly. Alice being the main character; is a strong, spunky, assertive woman, unsure, yet confident in a way I'd perceive as instinctively wreck-less. Her personality appears to be abrasive yet as a reader, I'm privy to background information that allows me to feel compassion and admiration simultaneously.

Isaac is a man with exceptional abilities. He is handsome, smart, dark with secrets of his own and Alice needs his help to find Emily before she is lost to the Reflection. Alice knows that being around Isaac will be difficult because of their past relationship but she does what is necessary. Together they use all their knowledge and power to the fight evil entities; one that is intimately linked to Alice and more powerful than Isaac alone.

Even though it was slow to start, the writing is succinct, clear and I look forward to reading more in the Half-Lich series.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked very much!

This book was a what the hell; its my birthday purchase.

And I liked it. I liked it quite a lot. It reminded me a lot of Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin series.

Alice was an interesting character whom, from what I gathered, after spending time in the Reflection (I'm going to take a wild guess and say that it's an alternate dimension where the Fae and their ilk live) . Alice spent time there and came back to a magic camera and new powers she's not totally sure how to use. And to complicate matters, she's part vampire that's got a more Asian bent: she's a soul eater.

Alice works as supernatural investigator. Her camera actually traps nastiest that go bump in the night, or anywhere they inhabit, really. As I was reading, I wondered if Alice could make spirits move on without Trapper (the camera), but I suppose that's a question for a later book.

Alice is asked by Nate (a recently unemployed theater worker because the theater was shut down) to save his friend Emily, who was taken into Reflection by Nyx, the dark siren herself when they were viewing one last film in the old theater. To get Emily back however, Alice needs the help of Isaac her one-time lover and a Necromancer to boot.

Together, they manage to get Emily, but in the process, they let Nyx out.

For me, in this bevy of characters, Isaac's guardian The Good Doctor (a plague doctor from Venetian times) was the most interesting. Part guardian, part teacher and totally interesting as characters go. I hope to read more of this duo in the second book.

I would totally recommend this book, even if it isn't a what-the-hell-it's-my-birthday purchase. :)
