Edward Unspooled Kindle Edition
Edward begins penning notes to the child (ever precise, he refers to the gestating being as "Cellular Stanton") as he navigates married life with Sheila, who is unhappy and unfulfilled in Montana; a work partnership with his friend Scott Shamwell, whose own life is teetering; and the emergence of a long-buried family secret and the effect of this revelation on his relationship with his overbearing mother.
Even as Edward's world expands, he must confront questions about whom to let in, how much to give, the very definition of family, the fragility of hope, and the expanses of love.

About the author

Craig Lancaster, a Montana-based novelist, writes stories set in the contemporary American West.
"I have these incredibly vivid memories of visiting Montana with my folks on family vacations, and following my dad, an itinerant laborer who worked in the oil and gas fields when I was a kid," he says. "It was such a vast, beautiful, overwhelming place. From the first time I saw Montana, I wanted to be a part of it."
Lancaster's work, hailed for its character-driven narratives, delves deeply below the surface, getting at the grit and the glory of lives ordinary and extraordinary.
"It's all too easy to turn people into caricatures, but the truth is, we humans are pretty damned fascinating," Lancaster says. "For me, fiction is a way at getting at truth. I use it to examine the world around me, the things that disturb me, the questions I have about life--whether my own or someone else's. My hope is that someone reading my work will have their own emotional experience and bring their own thoughts to what they read on the page."

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 October 2016I am officially in mourning! I have been both looking forward to and dreading this final (sobs) instalment in this fabulous series about a man called Edward Stanton Jr. who started out as a 39 year old and is now a 45 year old man with Aspergers Syndrome, along with a pretty serious case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
I would say it is imperative to read the earlier novels, 600 Hours of Edward and Edward Adrift before undertaking Edward Unspooled, and it is with that in mind that I make this warning.
Do Not Read On If You Have Not Read The Previous Two Novels
Not that my review contains any spoilers for this novel (I endeavour never to do that), but it does state a couple of things that you would already know if you’d read the previous books.
In this final instalment, we catch up with Edward after he has married Sheila Renfro (now Sheila Renfro Stanton). Edward’s life continues to have its challenges, not least that Sheila is now pregnant which Edward is not at all sure about.
Edward Unspooled is told through a series of diary entries to the baby, both from Edward’s perspective, and from Sheila’s.
Edward’s diary entries are funny, insightful and almost childlike (which is very much Edward’s style) and his journey through Sheila’s pregnancy is wonderfully uplifting. As usual, there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments (Edward is pretty funny sometimes) as well as the heartrending scenes I’ve come to expect from Craig Lancaster. Having said that, you can definitely see growth in Edward in this final book of the series.
I love his interactions with his friend Scott Shamwell. For two people who couldn’t be more different, their growing friendship warms my heart.
Edward’s mother continues to make me clench my fists and want to barrel into battle in defence of Edward, such is her downright inappropriate interfering in a grown man’s life, but it seems Edward doesn’t need any help – he manages perfectly well on his own.
This is probably my favourite out of all the ‘Edward’ books, but each one is wonderfully told. I am sure a ‘real’ Edward would annoy the hell out of me, but he would also charm and enchant me, and make me feel utterly privileged to be in his life. That is how I have felt reading these books.
And I shall now revert to my mourning!
Happy reading.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 November 2017Edward Stanton Jr is the wonderful creation from the pen of Craig Lancaster. This is the third book which follows 600 Hours of Edward and Edward Adrift. There is also a tie in to The Fallow Season of Hugo Hunter.
Edward, who has Asperger’s Syndrome is now married to Sheila who he met in Edward Adrift. They have moved back to Billings, Montana after the motel they ran in Cheyenne Well went out of business. The novel comprises a series of diary entries for the child they are expecting. Some are directly for the unborn and others are responses to what the other has written. These entries are delightfully funny, very sad and poignant.
The characters in the book are well drawn. Edward is brutally honest about life, Sheila lives with an air of frustration but also love for Edward. Edward’s best friend, Scott Shamwell is a loveable rouge. Edward’s mother is a rich snob.
The crux of the novel is twofold: the expected birth of their child and Edward’s discovery of a brother he did not know he had.
I just love these books. The turn of phrase attribute to Edward had me laughing out loud as do his conversations particularly with Scott. To appreciate this novel to the fullest extent I would recommend reading the preceding two first.
I do hope there is a fourth book in this series which features Edward and his infant
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 January 2017Edward Unspooled is the third book featuring Edward Stanton. To understand Edward more, I would advise reading 600 Hours of Edward and Edward Adrift before reading this one.
Edward is such a wonderful character. He is someone that the readers take to their hearts immediately. I was so pleased to discover that Edward is now married and expecting his first child with his wife.
The story is told between Edward and Sheila in the form of a diary/notes to their unborn child. This made the whole story really endearing. Edwards entries were so bitter sweet. Due to his Aspergers it does make some of what he writes quite funny. It did feel though that he was constantly being told off by Sheila which I kept feeling quite sorry for him.
Even though Edward is now well into his forties, he is still very much treated as a child by his mother and his wife. As much as his wife wants Edward to stand up to his mother, she is constantly telling him what to do also. As much as I didn't really like this about Sheila, overall you can tell what a good influence she has on Edward and more than anything you can see through these entries just how much they both love each other.
The whole story felt like Edward finally growing up and I was like a proud parent on the side lines cheering him on. He seems to learn so much more than just becoming a parent and I so enjoyed his journey of self discovery.
Edward Unspooled is just a wonderful read. Edward has vast become one of my all time favourite characters in a book. With each book my heart gets bigger with the pride that it is literally bursting with. He feels like he's not only the authors creation but the readers also and I so hope that we haven't seen the last of him.
Sweet, heartfelt, inspiring and an all round great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved!
This is the third book following the life of Edward Stanton. Though you could read this as a standalone, I highly recommend the first two books so you can have the full appreciation of Edward's journey. This is one of my favorite series.
I loved that Edward got another book. I rejoiced in his marriage, but I needed fatherhood for him. And this story went beyond my expectations. I didn't realize the journey Edward would be taking was going to go beyond just impending fatherhood. There was much more going on here, and I loved it. And the way this was written, through Edward's journal to the baby, turned out to be a brilliant.
This story handled Edward's transition to fatherhood beautifully, hitting all of Edward's layers. But there were a boatload of other layers infused in this story. We get Edward himself, with his fascinating depths, Edward's marriage to Sheila, and insights and revelations into Sheila herself. I particularly loved Edward's relationship with his friend Scott Shamwell. We're also introduced to another person in Edward's life, whom I can't wait to read more about. And there's just the right dose of life drama that enriches this story.
I dearly love Edward Stanton. He's one of my favorite fictional characters, and I would be exuberant (I love the word exuberant) beyond reason to have more books about him.
