DI Helen Grace has always been a firm favourite of mine. Hide and Seek is the sixth book in the DI Helen Grace series and my new favourite. Despite reading book five in the series, Little Boy Blue over two years ago, the plot and that breathtaking ending have been playing on my mind. Yes, it's true, I have spent the last two years wondering about the general health and well-being of a fictional character! Book blogger problems taken to a whole new level, maybe?!

If you're new to this series let me tell you, it is incredibly difficult to start this review as anything I say, anything I hint at could be (is) a massive spoiler regarding a previous book (the massive spoiler is also mentioned in the blurb so don't look 🙈)! I will be as vague as possible and hope you don't mind. Helen Grace finds herself somewhere no copper wants to be, in an environment as hostile as they come. I could make a couple of witty puns about a fall from 'Grace' but I won't torture you, dear reader. I have been champing at the bit to find out what was going to happen to our battered and bruised hero and all I can say is wow, just WOW! I loved the environment Arlidge has immersed his lead character in, I really enjoyed the motley cast of characters she met on her journey into the pits of Hell and I'm sorry, I'm going to say it, I loved Helen's fall from 'Grace', dangit!

Whilst Helen is otherwise engaged, her right-hand woman the tenacious DS Charlie Brooks, is out trying to right a few wrongs. The two plots run seamlessly alongside one another and I was compelled to keep turning the pages, flitting between the two investigations at breakneck speed. I had a fair idea of whodunit from early on in the book but I was completely wrong. The author has added some very believable red herrings which I fell for; hook, line and sinker.

Would I recommend this book? I would. It's true - this is my favourite DI Helen Grace adventure so far. However, I'm not sure this book will work all that well as a standalone. There is a heck of a lot of history that won't necessarily make sense to readers starting with Hide and Seek. My advice would be to start at the beginning and get to know Helen Grace from book one. I guarantee you will fall head over heels in love with her, just like I did. Oh, and don't read the blurb. It gives far too much away in my opinion ;)

Four and a half stars out of five.

Absolutely loved this, just had to find out what happened to Helen when she’d been so convincingly framed. A rollercoaster of a ride, it did not disappoint

Again?! I am astounded that a series of books can all be so good, this is the sixth in the series. Although they don't have to be read in order, I am pleased I have chosen to read them that way. I absolutely, can not say enough good about this book.

Helen Grace shows her resilience to the extreme whilst being locked up in Holloway, the worst place any police officer could be in. The novel gripped me from the start, the descriptive writing had my imagination in over drive and the events that unfold are... well... you really need to read it to find out.

Feeling familiar with the characters in the book, I felt all manner of emotions for Charlie and her determination to prove Helen's innocence. Their friendship is tested to the extreme, the investigation to free Helen is a dangerous path, with sacrafices to be made along the way.

With numerous investigations and suspicions running thoroughout the book, I changed my mind several times. I was so convinced I had the suspect nailed, but no I didn't! Not even close!

I had this as a paperback Christmas present and I could not wait to get stuck in. The quality of writing never wavers throughout the series and the content is equally as drawing as the previous five!

It is with eager anticipation, I will begin LOVE ME NOT.

Absolutely love this series of books. Each one is written in a thought-provoking manner. Each time I think I’m gonna put out the light and go to sleep, after I finish the chapter, I can’t!!! I have to keep reading. Chapters are usually 2 or 3 pages long, which makes it very easy to read. I can easily get through a book in less than 24 hours. Highly recommend

I really enjoyed reading this, no question. The setting was compelling form the start. The Helen Grace series is very easy to read, and generally good writing. However, most of the books have an element of the plot that I can't quite accept.

In this instance there were two:
Firstly, a detective enters a hospice looking for a suspect who is working there, and has no idea the detective is on his tail. Somehow, not only does he escape capture, but he has even set a trap. This didn't make sense to me.
Later on, a detective effectively breaks in to a prison by ramming through a vehicle barrier. I think there's a lot more to getting inside a prison than that, but the details are conveniently ignored.
Another feature of the books is a convenient string of suspects who seem a perfect fit for the crime, but is ultimately each time down to coincidence.
I will continue to read these, as they are entertaining and for the most part very credible. But I don't rate the quality of writing quite as high as some others in the genre.

That hooked me into speed read. Even the plot is addictive. One crime happened in prison, and another finding evidence to help release the protagonist, the detective, out of prison.

Exciting, as events pushed through speedily. This has become one of my favorite noir writers. 5-star.

Each chapter is short, sometimes only two pages. But it is enough. Just right to the point, enough to raise some insights but not enough to know whodunit yet. Brilliant.

And the ending raises an eyebrow. That’s the satisfaction of a novel about why mutilated corpses are piling up.

Didn't like it as much as the previous ones because some of the events in the prison were too ridiculous. For example, the fact that everyone missed really obvious evidence about the murders in the prison apart from Helen Grace. However, it's still good and a page turner.

D I Helen Grace is a complicated character shaped by events that would crush most people but which has given her quirks that helps her deal with her past. That lifestyle has put her in her current situation where she has been disgraced as a police officer and she finds herself incarcerated awaiting her trail. She is defined by a code of ethics not everyone could live by and is now trying to be true to herself while navigating her current situation. Great read.
