- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2016This is a very good book and an interesting story. I just hope he writes more in this genre as I've checked his other books and he either writes novellas that I never bother with or about things that don't appeal to me. He did so well with this one that he should stick with this style, I think !!
It was one of those tales that could so easily happen to anyone...........one little lie and how it snowballed into the events it did. It was cleverly done and makes you think. Zach was an interesting character. You manage to go through a lot of differing feelings about him throughout.
It had some mistakes but not tons. Twice he got the apostrophe wrong in teachers', once in Marshalls which didn't need one, he does that American thing of using discretely as opposed to discreetly. They all seem to do this. He used respectable and not respectably, missed out words in some sentences like them/of, used an and not and, then made and not gave....
So I hope he decides to write more like this.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 October 2016I downloaded this to my Kindle app and I enjoyed it. There is no real lead up, it starts straight into the story, I did get a little distracted about half way through as the story seemed to be getting a little far fetched but as I read on I got more into it and I finished it, having glad to have done so. There is a little foul language and it can get just a little gory, which I didn't particularly like but I persevered. I wouldn't say it was one of the best books I have read but it was enjoyable to a point and I would recommend it. I would consider reading another book by the same author.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 May 2017This story confused me. The central character, a young teacher is relocating and en-route in her car on a wet and stormy night in the middle of nowhere, by herself, she picks up a male hitchhiker. "Dumb", I hear you thinking. And so it is. Our intrepid heroine thus embarks on a fairly long list of making dumb decisions. The premise of this book, I think is that if you tell small white lies, things can escalate and they certainly do here. From an untruth told to get the aforementioned creepy hitchhiker out of her car, to murder. So this book purports to be a morality tale. Little sins have a way of turning into big ones.
I also found myself not really knowing at times how to pigeon hole the characters. The creepy hitchhiker and the buff boyfriend both turn out to have sides to them that initially isn't obvious. I don't necessarily think that's a criticism, but an observation although it can serve to unsettle the reader, who may be unsure where the story is going at times.
All the above said, I still think this is an engaging book. I enjoyed it, I did want to know what happened to everybody and, despite her lack of ability to make rational decisions, found myself rooting for the central character.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 January 2017This is another great read from Jeremy Bates - every book of his I have read I have enjoyed. This one starts with a simple lie, and from there things spiral out of control. A simple story that grows more complex with each page. Small lies lead to bigger ones which get our heroine in more and more trouble, wondering who she can really trust. A real thrilling page turner which of course did not go as I expected! A great read for those who like thrillers, I shall definitely be reading more books by Jeremy Bates as I am really enjoying his writing.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 April 2018White Lies is a proper page turner. It's easy to read, quick paced and good fun. Sure, the story is a small one and very self contained, and occasionally I thought the main character needed to get a grip and take control, but I was entertained the whole way through. A good 'beach' read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 July 20162 stars only. Not my type of thriller but I am sure their will be others who think it an excellent read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 July 2016This is outside of my usual reading matter but I thought I would give it a go.
The first part of the book was suspenseful and I liked the premise of one lie leading to unknown and terrifying consequences.
Unfortunately the actions and consequences became quite unbelievable.
A professional teacher gets taken in quickly by someone who she thinks is going to help her after she told her first lie. Silly typos spoilt it.
In this day and age it is hard to believe the people do not carry their mobile phones with them all the time, also hard to believe the way the other teachers behaved.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 September 2016Highly recommended read to anyone whether your a first time reader of a Jeremy Bates book or a regular reader of his work absolutely gripping story and definitely didn't see what was coming, had to read on to see . 5.0 out of 5 stars White Lies
I received a copy of White Lies" by Jeremy Bates through the Goodreads Giveaway Contest.
I loved this book . I was gripped right from the get go, and I couldn't put it down. The chapters were short, and I found I was nervously flipping the page to see what was going to happen next.
Katrina Burton was driving from Seattle along the Cascade Mountain Range in Northern Washington in a heavy downpour. She was heading to Leavenworth, where she had been offered a job teaching high school English. Her travelling companion was her dog, a boxer named Bandit. Then she came across a stranger, a man walking along the highway and she decided to stop and give him a lift. His name was Zach, and he said his car had broken down...but she never saw any broken down cars on the route. He had been drinking. It turns out Zach was a teacher at the same school as Katrina. In the car Zach made her nervous and uncomfortable, and she told him a white lie...that she had a house in town and a cabin on the lake. This was the start of many lies to cover up the previous untruths.Katrina lied to fit in. These little white lies lead to some terrible consequences.
I felt that Katrina's character was weak at the beginning, and sometimes I wanted to just shake her and warn her to smarten up,but as the novel progressed her character definately became stronger.
This was a well written and exciting thriller.White Lies by Jeremy Bates is an excellent read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Spannend, aber recht unrealistisch
Spannend, aber manches ist doch sehr weit hergeholt... Außerdem finde ich die Schreibweise etwas wenig fließend. Die Geschichte ist dennoch interessant
