Wizard in a Witchy World Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 2,347 ratings

Modern day wizard Felix Slade knows better than to meddle in the lives of witches. But when a chance encounter with a beautiful witch, Gabriella, sparks a vision of her demise at the hand of a werewolf, he knows he must act. To make matters worse, his vision reveals feelings he has for this woman he's only seen from afar and in that moment his life is changed forever.

Trouble has been brewing in sleepy Leotown, but explodes when Felix witnesses the gruesome murder of Gabriella’s coven leader and ends up number one on a short list of suspects. It's a poor start to their relationship when Gabriella and her coven sisters attack Felix while looking for answers. With her foot literally on his chest, Felix begins to doubt what he felt in his vision - that is - until the werewolves actually show up.

Wizard in a Witchy World is the first book in the Witchy World series – an urban fantasy, paranormal fairy tale.

Interview with the Author

Q - So, what makes the Witchy World series special?
A - I'm an avid reader of urban fantasy and my goal was to create stories that are exactly what I love to read. My top picks favor stories where the heroes, simply put, don't quite have it all put together just yet. I' have always been a fan of witches, wizards, werewolves, vampires, and the like, who are in the process of discovering their new-found or undeveloped talents.

Early on in my writing career, I received a piece of advice I haven't forgotten - love your villains. When I reflected on this, I realized that all of the best sellers followed this, now obvious, advice. As a result, I spend as much time developing my villain's reasons for doing what they do as I spend trying to figure out how my heroes will work their way through seemingly overwhelming odds.

Finally, I like to mix a little romance into the storyline. For me, a good story starts with the character's relationships with the people around them. I'm also a big fan of strong female characters. In real life, as in my stories, I find strong women who know what they want to be exhilarating.

Q - What order should I read the books in?
A - I've written the series so you can read the books in any order. Each book is a complete story and all threads will tie up nicely by the time you're finished. Reading in order will give a slightly better context to recurring characters and I'd suggest the following sequence:
As a Crow Flies (available with newsletter signup)
Wizard in a Witchy World
Wicked Folk: An Urban Wizard's Tale
Wizard Unleashed (coming soon)

Q - So, why should readers give these books a try?
A - Because the Witchy World series books are exciting tales of adventure in a world not so different than our own! Do you believe that witches exist, that werewolves prowl the streets and magic is real? Is it possible that ordinary people might possess extraordinary talents?

Ultimately, readers who enjoy entertaining thoughts of the paranormal and exhilarating, fast-paced adventure will enjoy the Witchy World Series.

Jamie McFarlane is a graduate of Colorado School of Mines with a Master of Science in Mathematics. An avid reader, tinkerer, woodworker and metal sculptor, Jamie is just as likely to be seen smelting aluminum cans in his garage as he is tacking random, discarded iron objects into a small army of beasties that adorn his home’s landscaping.

Jamie’s writing career began as something of a dare which later turned into a tribute. In his late teens, Jamie was well known as the family story-teller, spinning fanciful yarns about ordinary events, usually with the objective of escaping well-deserved trouble. One day, his mother, often the target of his mischievous tales, challenged him to commit his words to writing. Jamie promised he would but time passed, as did his beloved mother. In 2014, Jamie made good on his promise and published his first book.

Jamie is the author of a growing library of novels and novellas of military science fiction titles including Junkyard Pirate and the Privateer Tales series.

I was a bit reluctant to start a new series by Jamie McFarlane, if it was good, then it might get in the way of him writing his excellent Sci-fi series!
Turns out it’s really well written, and has a compelling story & set of characters. A nice blend of urban fantasy with a dash of comedy & heart-warming relationships. Now I want Jamie to write like the wind, for sequels to both genres !

I don't normally bother with urban fantasy, but I was intrigued by this and, being free, figured I'd give it a go.
A good deed for the day leaves the main character hip deep in the power struggles of the local witchcraft community and in the bad books of a particularly unpleasant werewolf. Getting out and figuring out what it has to do with him drives the story.
A fun read, the characters are likable and well rounded, the plot well paced and involving without being too convoluted. Some revelations at the end felt a little rushed, a few more threads throughout the book wouldn't be a bad idea but that's a fairly minor gripe.
None of the 50 Shades of Twilight that puts me off most UF but with a core of believable, genuinely sweet romance in there none the less.

This is a story that grabs you and wont let go. It's fun to read and the story is firzt rate. The main character is funny and interesting and he has some cool spells up his sleeve. I loved the inclusion of a few female trolls...they make nice additions. Maggie, the raven gets more and more interezting as the story goes on. Altogether, this story had fun, great imagination and action, and was a very pleasant read.

Felix Slade is a wizard recently moved to town. He is suspected of a murder by the Police,
though he knows a werewolf was the killer. But how could he tell that to the police?!
He is attacked and later befriended by some witches, though there are some bad witches involved
in the story. I did find it a little strange that he would find a female troll sexy - but hey, this IS a fantasy story!

His powers were interesting - no wand needed - and I enjoyed the troll character. It took a while to
figure out how the inherited house figured into the murders and the werewolves. This is a stand alone
book, but there were some things left unexplained - Felix's relations for one - but I expect that will become
clear in the next book. An enjoyable witches and magic read.

This book was throughly entertaining. Each character was described in a relatable manner. I could clearly picture each individual as the story unfolded. The police officer's reaction to his dilemma was believable (I can see a story unfolding there), especially in regards to his relationship with his wife and his present situation. This book was intriguing, a light read with enough intricacy to keep me interested. I was easily able to lose myself in a world of fantasy for the entire day.

Wizards, witches, werewolves and sexy trolls! What more could anyone ask for in an urban fantasy book?
It is well written with a couple of mistakes (when did 'drug' come in as the past tense of drag?) which do nothing to detract from the story.
I really enjoyed the book and hope the series continues.
I look forward to reading more of Mr McFarlane's work.

This was a very interesting read and at times it seemed quite funny. I did find the main character to be a bit fickle and at times not quite relatebale but I thought the whole plot was rather good. It reminded me in ways of The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher but perhaps in a lighter way.

Jamie McFarlane has created a fascinating alternate dimension in our world within his story about magical creatures. Right now we could use a few of his wizards, witches, werewolves, and shape-shifters in Ukraine and Russia to take out Mr. Putin and his army. Jamie's characters are well developed, and

I usually read sci fi but occasionally dip into the occult world, this is by far the best I've read. I couldn't put it down. Nice intrigue, good plot, and fascinating interactions between unique beings.
I wanted a distraction and escape and this book fit the bill. Well done and great writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written with a fresh perspective
Reviewed in France on 13 August 2017
Very nicely constructed start to what I hope will be an equally interesting series. Unusual, as the story is from a males perspective, but it brings a much appreciated fresh, and invigorating, twist to the somewhat over visited genre. Also, rather than falling back on predictable non stop action of the PI genre to keep the pages turning, the author keeps it light whilst building both characters and suspense. There is some nice realistic, but not graphic, adult interaction too, no spoilers, but it should satisfy the romance requirements for most mature readers, and shouldn't be offensive to younger readers... In fact, there is some male perspective honesty going on that is probably a better yardstick, or role model/aspiration material, than the two dimensional frat boy characterisations that abound in the coming of age with a mystical twist genre aimed at young readers.

So found him thru the Liam Hoffen stories and thought I'd see how he handled another genre. Is there nothing he can't do? I loved this book. Another amazing hero, rounded in character, a nice guy who gets the girl, powerful, right-thinking, noble... this was a wonderfully entertaining read from the first word til the last. The plot unfolded at just the right pace. I loved it so much! Great characters, meaty story, motivations that worked. Did i mention I love it? Jamie McFarlane has fast become a fave writer of mine... and that is saying something. Xxxx

Hier passt fast alles!!
