The Scarlet Thread (Fated Destruction Book 1) Kindle Edition
My name is Kaidance Monroe, and sometimes when I touch people, I see how they die.
I see death with a single touch. Cast away by my parents into the cold embrace of a juvenile detention center, I swore off human contact. No more touching, no more visions, no more pain.
But everything changes as my eighteenth birthday approaches. A stranger breaks through the fortress I've built around myself, bringing with him danger and a magnetic allure I'm powerless to resist. He doesn't recoil at my curse; instead, he reveals a chilling truth: I'm not a freak; I'm a target.
Suddenly, I'm on the run, plunged headfirst into a realm where ancient myths pulse with life, shadows stalk with intent, and my cursed touch is a weapon sought by unseen enemies. My sanctuary? A hidden mansion, nestled among the whispers of forgotten gods and mythical creatures, becomes my training ground.
Here, I hone my abilities, bracing for a war that looms on the horizon. Within these walls, amidst the looming threat and mystical secrets, my heart becomes entangled in the most dangerous game of all.
Certainly not my would-be killer.
And I never imagined how far he would fall.
There's something strange about Sitri, my rugged savior who disappears into the woods at night and seems to shadow my every move. Is he my jailer, or my shield? Our bond is fraught with tension, each moment a dance on the knife-edge of trust and betrayal.
When my friends are in danger, I'm forced to team up with Puriel, the fallen angel who tried to kill me - he's beautiful and deadly. He wields the sword, but the death it claims is mine to carry. Can we escape this sprawling estate of lost gods and mythological creatures, and whose death will pay for our freedom?
As secrets unfold and alliances shift, I'm forced to confront the truth: in this game of gods and monsters, love is the deadliest weapon, and choosing sides could cost more than just my heart.

"Percy Jackson meets Mortal Kombat. This book seems quite close to the Percy Jackson series, if it had gore, death and totalitarian dictatorship." ★★★★★
"Weaves Greek mythology into real life in a way that makes it excruciatingly hard to stop reading. This is not your G-rated fantasy. It's harsh, twisted and real." ★★★★★
"A dark Gothic Greek mythology urban Fantasy with a highly original and very well-written plot. There are several unexpected twists and turns here and a real shocker at the end." ★★★★★

About the author

D.S. Murphy lives in castles and writes YA dark fantasy and science fiction. He wrote his MA Thesis on Harry Potter and his PhD dissertation on Paradise Lost, and believes that words are magic. When not dreaming up epic tales with dragons, aliens, vampires, mermaids and fallen angels - either hunting or falling in love with each other - he prefers to sip espresso and chase kittens, half buried in a pile of books.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 June 2021We meet Kaidance Monroe as she's drawn into a dangerous world of two competing forces, with supernatural beings and the gods of Mount Olympus battling for ultimate power. Kai learns she has a gift she's unaware of, but she is our ordinary hero, forced to fight other people's battles as well as her own and try to survive in a culture seemingly more lethal and treacherous than the mortal world she came from. Richly drawn, full of life and death emotion and deadly stakes. I loved it. Can't wait to read all the books.

This is an enjoyable story. I liked how the Greek Gods & their descendants were brought up to our timeline & it mixed in the Fates individual powers & how they effect one girl, Kaidance Monroe, very personally!💔 She's put in danger & pulled in different directions until she makes a decision to protect her two bestfriends.🙏

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 March 2017I enjoyed bits of this. I’ll say some good things first. The heroine is painted well: Kaidance, a disillusioned teen girl, living in a kind of juvenile detention centre.
Quickly, we come to understand that she’s not a bad person, just that she’s got freaky powers that led her parents to put her in here unjustly. (Going to add here – I think there was a little too much backstory drawn out in the first two chapters to do with this, which halted the momentum of the story.)
I particularly liked the first meeting/interaction between Kaidance and Puriel.
“Before I could stop him he licked his thumb and brushed it against my cheek to wipe away the blood…That’s when I saw the stars. I thought I might have blacked out. My vision was filled with millions of them, whole galaxies, everything converging together into one blinding light, and then nothingness. Just empty, black void.”
Okay, other than that I found the next bit – when they get to a kind of house/training camp way too Percy Jackson-esque and the characters (stroppy, antagonistic girl), (hot, nymphomaniac guy) a bit of a cop out. I’m definitely up for using the Greek Gods and their well-known characters as a foundation to build a character, but not to find anything unique and different in them is disappointing.
Overall, not a bad read for pace and action, but I felt it was somewhat lacking in substance, especially from the promising and interesting meeting between the MC and Puriel.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 September 2018I love mythology and this book just overflows with it. It was interesting to have gods, who having lived for thousands of years, appear to have learned little about humans. Accused of having killed her young brother, and frightened of hurting anyone else. Kaidance is in a young offenders institution. Life changes when an unknown man starts to test her abilities. Suddenly she finds herself hunted by people that appear to want something from her, but what exactly isn't clear. An exciting story that has several twists in it.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 April 2022Great book, well the first half of it, there is no second half to be found anywhere! The 2nd book doesn't even pick up the story from where the first half left off. Frustrated is an understatement. Poor play.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 October 2016Wow! Brilliantly written, feel for the main character straight away. Very disappointed that this was getting sooo good and then just stops because "surprise" it was a taster so the author could judge the reader reactions!!!!
Well D.S Murphy I loved it and definitely want more so write fast my lovely because I'm a quick reader and you definitely have a new fan in me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kept me wondering and wanting more
I like Derek's books and this one, The Scarlet Thread didn't disappoint! Yes there are few editing errors, but hey no one is perfect and didn't effect the story. Just downloaded book 2 and can not wait to start reading! Thank you Derek for a really good read :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly addicting!!
I've long been a fan of mythology..... GREEK, Norse, Celtic.... You name it.... I've also been fascinated by the stories of the Oracles of Delphi, and The Fates (3 sisters who are the arbitors of our fates... Past/present/future.... Birth /death)....this story is a feat for someone like me. If you enjoyed the books of films of Percy Jackson then you'll also most likely enjoy this. An unknowing Samantha is "gifted" the Fates powers as a three day old infant. Not exactly what anyone would want as it came with no training. Suddenly the slightest touch gives her the knowledge of that persons death if it was a violent/not natural kind. When she sees her baby brothers death even her parents didn't believe her. After all, who would believe a 9 year old that they know exactly how their brother would die? Most would assume either crazy talk or sibling rivalry. No matter what she did to prevent his accident it still occurred. As nobody believed how Sam knew beforehand.... Her folks and the courts deemed she was the one who dis the deed. Thus landing her in a juveline psych hospital. Many years later a visitor appears and promptly breaks her out if this place. Imagine her shock when she learns first that he believes her innocent. He also believes she has these powers.... Then imagine how gobsmacked she is when she ends up in a mansion with half the Olympic Gods!!! She slowly learns more about her powers and their limits... And at the same time is deducing just what everyone's motives are. Who is telling the truth? Who is deceiving her? Sure Zeus sounds like a grade a jerk as he's trying to kill her for no good reason.... But does it instantly make the other side good? Jump into this first part of Sam's adventure as she learns about her self and those around her.... I can't wait for the second part set to come out any time now. Love, betrayal, mythology, mystery, you name it this has it! Hold onto your horses and Minotaurs people as this ride is definitely going to get bumpy.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is ok
I thought it would be better but it is good though. I think everything was a bit slow until the end, which encourages you to buy the second one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic.
Loved this book. It was a quick read, but captivating nonetheless. Looking forward to the second installment! Several mythology concepts overlap, which is refreshing. Very well done. Love the modern twist!

4.0 out of 5 stars Thread of life?
Summary
If she touched you, Kadence could see how you would die. Not when or even where, just how… As a little girl, she tried so hard to tell others when she saw her brother die. No one believed her, until he really died and she was the suspect. She was convicted and sent to juvenile hall.
Then, one day, someone finally listened and believed that she had the power to foresee death. She was going to leave this prison and be free! But, at what cost? Why would anyone believe her and want to save her?
Conclusion
This book combined Greek mythology and the darker sides of human nature. The constant search to differentiate good and evil, right and wrong could be confusing and difficult at times. What one might believe was correct might also be wrong in another sense.
