The e-book is very informative and detailed in relation to doing the 5 - 2 diet. It guides you through how to do the diet by eating normally on five days of the week then fasting for the other two days. When it says fasting it doesn't recommend complete fasting but rather to cut down the calorie intake significantly to approximately 500 to 600 calories. For most people this would produce weight loss over a period. I would say that this diet is good and would be easy for most people to incorporate into their lives but I also would say that this would be best done over a set period of 3 - 6 months then perhaps try to eat a balanced diet 7 days a week and not have 2 days where you eat very few calories. I really enjoyed reading this e-book as I was aware of the diet but didn't realise how it worked. received this book for free in return for my unbiased and honest opinion of the product. Very good book.

About a year ago I did the 5:2 diet leading up to my wedding, I lost 20lbs in 3 months. A year on, I saw this downloadable book and thought it would be a good idea to read it to get me back in the 'zone' as have decided to lose weight following the birth of our twins!

It's an informative read, and it explains all the health benefits of the fasting diet and how it's not just about losing weight. It details benefits of the diet and how to do the diet. It's motivating and helps to set a person on the right foot to start the 5:2.

With regards to the diet itself I know it definitely works and I never thought I could get through a day of fasting but it's amazing how quickly your body deals with change, especially when it's for the better.

Overall, an easy (about 20 minutes) and informative read.

i got this for free to check it out and leave an honest review, its short, easy to follow and actually makes perfect sense, i only marked it down one star because it repeats its self so much, a little bit annoying but not that much. it took about 20 minutes to read through and gave me some very helpful ways to fit this diet into my every day life, shows you the benefits and pitfalls and explains repeatedly how it works. i might even give it a go, its very easy to follow and theres no major callorie counting, no off limit foods, no red foods green foods yellow foods, no points to add up you eat what you like ... its that simple.. its hard to review without actually telling you how the diet works and kinda giving you no reason to buy the book lol

its a diet for people who hate following diets. simple, yet seemingly effective, after reading it you will be .. well Duh! sounds simple enough so give it a shot, lose a few pounds, fit into those skinny jeans for the summer, im gonna give it a go !

I lost 30 pounds on the 5:2 diet in 2014 before my wedding. Since then, I have dabbled in doing fast days but only lost back to this 30 pounds. I know it works but sometimes, when you have been doing something on and off for a while you need to try something new to get results.

I need to lose another 15 and wanted something that would give me a kick start. In the past Weight Watchers failed, Slimming World failed and although they worked up to a point I cannot afford the 'diet' fat reducing pills any more (they did work but at £50 a month I cannot do that)!

So I know the 5:2 works for me but I need to get back to basics.

The big part for me wasn't just the food - it was the booze. I love a glass of good wine, a gin and tonic, a cider, a beer basically I love my booze - not huge amounts on a Friday and Saturday but a couple of glasses a night. On this you really should try and avoid so I have done for the first week. Its not easy - fasting and low calorie meal planning I have done and can do, this is much more of a lifestyle change than I ever had to do with the 5:2 - with that I just didn't drink on my fast days. So far its been pretty easy to do this. I bought one of those waterbottles with a fruit bit and often have a mint and cucumber version going so I don't miss it. I also love fizzy water so try to make sure I have a bottle in the fridge as I like it cold.

I tend to avoid breakfast during the week as I am so busy in the morning I don't miss it. This means I tend to fast Monday to Friday at least until lunch. I then can have a really great lunch (normally avocado based so feels like a treat) and what I feel is a more 'normal' dinner - without having to cook separate meals for the family! I do this by having the 'protein' and veg and cooking separate carbs for my husband. I tend to keep these to things I am not that fond of so I don't get tempted, such as boiled potatoes and oven chips which he loves. It also means, as I go to the gym 4-5 times week, I can have a lovely lunch afterwards. At the weekends it works a little differently as I do like to have breakfast when I have more time. This means, I tend to have something egg based for a 'brunch' type meal, as suggested in the book. I then might have some soup lunch time and then proper meal. Sunday, traditionally we always have a roast. So what I do is just make it so I can have some version of a roast - using most of the time 600 of the 800 recommended a day and eat it around 3. This is what has worked for me and just an idea of how I make this diet fit around me rather than the other way around!

At work I am normally 'good' because I am busy and can't just nip out to get something - but I do ensure I have a few nuts (literally 3-4) always on me just in case as I sometimes have to do lots of driving and I worry about feeling the hunger and a little 'shaky'. This doesn't happen often honestly

I think thats a good thing. I've lost 6 pounds in my first week. Second week in, after the weekend which I found much harder than the week, lost a total of 10. This doesn't cost huge amounts of money, doesn't take huge amount of preparation - just a bit more thought.

I think even if you don't stick to everything - taking on board most of the lifestyle guide Michael offers will benefit your health long term and if you lose weight too - Fab!

Highly recommend especially if you know Michael's 5:2 idea works for you.

Please feel free to comment if I can help I would love too as I know how hard ordering online can be! Dieting is such a difficult and complicated subject. If you found my review helpful please click that button if not give me a comment as to why it wasn't so I can try and help in the future.

**Disclaimer: I downloaded this book for free in return for a review. I always strive to be as honest as possible in reviews and would never recommend a product that I didn't feel warranted my support**
This e-book benefits from simple tips for the beginner faster and from simple language accessible to most.
However, it is extremely short (less than 15mins read) and the chapters lack detail. It seems to be the e-book equivalent of a leaflet about the diet. The book does not go into any depth about the science behind intermittent fasting, despite some evidence that could be used to back up claims.
If you are expecting a very short overview and introduction to the 5:2 diet - this e-book is for you.
Unfortunately it does not live up to it's title - it is neither an 'ultimate guide' nor a 'complete guide' and I would recommend wider reading around the subject for anyone interested in the diet and its benefits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! Love this "diet"!

I have always struggled with weight loss and have tried every single diet out there, after having gastric sleeve surgery and losing 90+ this is the only "diet" I have been able to follow to lose the last 20lbs to reach my goal weight. After 2 years of having my gastric sleeve surgery I was not losing any more weight, I actually gained more than 15 lbs because the more I try I just cannot eat healthy, I hate salads, and I hate fish. If I eat chicken, its either with pasta or breaded (nuggets). After the weight gain I decided to go to a weight loss clinic and Dr put me on a diet exactly like this book describes. 2 days of "fasting" (not really fasting because you do eat), and 5 days of regular eating, that is it. No list of prohibited foods and no yucky salads! I lost 15 lbs the first month and around 9 lbs the second month. This book also shows you how to modify it if you need to accelerate weight loss (which my Dr never told me about) or if you want to slow weight loss, kind of like maintaining your weight once you reach your goal. It also gives you precautions and tips for when you are on the program for more effectiveness. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has trouble sticking to a diet and does not like super healthy food. It is soo easy to incorporate it into your lifestyle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good intro to an easy and practical way to stay trim. Recommended especially for a beginner.
Reviewed in the United States on 28 January 2016
So simple -- "The 5:2 diet, or fast diet, is a diet which stipulates calorie restriction for two non-consecutive days a week and unconstrained eating the other five days. The diet originated and became popular in the UK, and spread in Europe and to the USA. It is a form of intermittent fasting. The diet became popular in the UK after the BBC2 television Horizon documentary Eat, Fast and Live Longer written and presented by Michael Mosley was broadcast on 6 August 2012 and many books on the diet quickly became bestsellers, soon after", according to Wikipedia. This book is full of good advice, particularly for a beginner - like exercise, eat nutrition-rich foods, etc -- but the basic concept is well presented. Although considered by many in the medical profession as a "fad diet" - it's really a nice life-style pattern to adopt -- like do a fast day before a party day, or if you've been eating too much -- it's an easy device to normalize and stay reasonably trim -- I received this product in exchange for an honest review --

4.0 out of 5 stars Direct and to the point - Author includes basic advice for novice dieters
Reviewed in the United States on 25 January 2016
Elizabeth Goldsmith has shed some light on the 5:2 diet. I like that it was a light read and she gets right to the point, however, as a book that is called "The Ultimate Guide.." I expected more info on the diet itself.

Keep in mind there isn't much to the 5:2 diet it's a fairly simple and direct diet or "food pattern", as the author describes so eloquently. The only downside is that I feel like most of the book involves basic advice for novice dieters, such as, exercise should still be part of your lifestyle, eating healthier food alternatives should be part of your lifestyle, this shouldn't be viewed as a diet but as a lifestyle, etc. lolz.

What would have helped to give 5 stars is perhaps a couple of sample recipes for the fasting days, reference to studies, links to bloggers who offer advice, etc. For example, instead of saying you should focus on nutrient rich foods on fasting days to eat your nutrients and not feel hungry - give examples, like:

    - Spinach is rich in iron and 1 cup is only 7 calories
    - Avoid dressings in salads and use citrus juice such as limes or lemons with salt and pepper
    - Use herbs to add flavor to dishes in lieu of condiments

Other than that, I am happy with the book and looking forward to test out this new "lifestyle" :)

5.0 out of 5 stars I do like that when your starting out you have a choice ...
Reviewed in the United States on 28 January 2016
I am always ambivalent to try a diet that i have to fast in. I need food to maintain my schedule and keep up with 3 boys, not to mention i actually will get dizzy or run out of fuel, even get cranky.

However, once i read this book, it isn't actually completely not eating, it is reducing your calories intake for 2 days, well drastically reducing them, but at least you still eat and not just drink water or whatever the other fasting diets have you drink. It explains a food pattern and that incorporating exercise in your lifestyle should be part of it too. As an advent walker i think it will help me lose wight quicker.

I do like that when your starting out you have a choice to choose which days you want to have as your fasting days. I plan to start by not having my days be consecutive until my body gets use to the fasting days. This diet seems easy and once i have conditioned my body, i would like to try to have my 2 days consecutively. With exercise and the 5:2 diet, i'm looking forward to seeing how much weight i will lose.

The 5:2 diet is a form of intermittent fasting. Before I read this book, I had tried the 5:2 diet before. I really liked it a lot, and still use it from time to time. I found it a gentle introduction to intermittent fasting and gave me confidence to try other fasting regimes. I am currently using a more aggressive intermittent fasting plan, but I will likely revert back to the 5:2 plan as I get closer to reaching my goals and need a maintenance plan. I love the simplicity of intermittent fasting. With the 5:2 version, you simply reduce your calories to 25% of your normal intake two days per week. As the book mentions, fasting days can be any two days that you choose, or any two days that work with your schedule. Intermittent fasting is nice because if you are going to a party or other social event, or want to go out to eat at a nice restaurant, you can plan your fasting days so that you get days off when you want to indulge. The fasting days don't need to be consecutive, and I found it easier when I was just starting to not have consecutive fasting days. As I became more accustomed to it, I found it easier to sometimes do consecutive days. I love that with intermittent fasting I can still have my favorites, I just have to give them up during fasting day. On a fasting day, you can eat all your allowed calories at one meal, or you can divide them up for two or more meals. This book also notes that people with certain conditions should not do intermittent fasting of any kind, so it would be a good idea to read this book and check with your doctor to make sure that it safe and healthy for you to start this program. I received a discount on this product in exchange for an honest review.
