Holy Habits Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 135 ratings

The call to Christian discipleship is a call to adventure. Holy Habits explores the nature of that adventure through a rich mix of biblical material and inspiring stories. The nurturing role of the ten holy habits of discipleship as seen in Acts 2 is then explored. The ten habits are: biblical teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, prayer, giving, service, eating together, gladness and generosity, worship and making more disciples. Each chapter has suggestions for further reflection and action that can be used individually or by smaller or larger Christian communities.

Product description

Review

Holy Habits is about the heart of the Christian Life - about being shaped by Jesus Christ as we follow him. Andrew writes simply and compellingly from his own experience as a church leader and pioneer, and most of all as a human being seeking to know and share God's love. He takes the rich traditions of Christian discipline and translates them into language that everyone can access and put into practice. His book will help you find holiness. I commend it warmly. --Paul Bayers Bishop of Liverpool

Just the job! An accessible and authentic account of Christian discipleship, full of encouragement and insight. Which when linked with the material on Holy Habits becomes a resource for Christian fruitfulness for each and every small group and local congregation I can think of. --Martin Atkins Team Leader and Superintendent Minister, Methodist Central Hall, Westminster

Grounded in practice and real-life stories and surrounded by theory, erudition and wide reading, this is one of the best books I've read on discipleship. The examples come from all round the world, from different sources, from Fresh Expressions and traditional Christians, from elderly people and young ones, women as well as men. I love the way the habits are every day, ordinary, do-able ones. This feels very godly. --Lucy Moore Messy Church

This book takes the reader through the past experience of the Church. It seems to be saying "let's keep doing the same thing we've done in the past! Something different will happen surely.

There is so much happening in the world wide Church and it is happening in places where leaders and people together are willing to change at the leading of the Holy Spirit of God. I've been a part of a group studying this book and its other resources and there is no, that is no, challenge or encouragement for change. The Methodist Church has wasted it's time and money in supporting this comfort food. I'm disappointed.

Saw the article in the national Methodist magazine " Connection" and bought the book. Really good bible background for each 'habit' as well as practical applications. I have already used it in a number of services as the practical community response to Acts 2 passage on the life of the spirit filled early church. Hope to get circuit involved looking at the themes.

This is a very useful book that takes 10 Holy habits from the last few verses of Acts Chapter 2. It offers a simple understandable model of discipleship that draws on a lot of current resources and thinking on the subject. In some ways it feels a little light as it's not really saying anything that other books aren't saying, however it does draw the ideas together in a way that is accessible to the average person and avoids being academic or aloof.

A good way for Christians to start the year. Eloquently written but not preachy. I really wish my church was up for it. I'm left with a very definite sense of 'if only'.

This is an exploration of features of the early church and how we might adopt them in the 21st century. I would like for it to have been a bit crunchier. The Jesus of the New Testament is supremely loving but He is also a bit scary ("Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?"). He walked through crowds intent on lynching him and upset money changers. Andrew's Jesus is just a bit too cuddly for my taste.
