Quite possibly the funniest book I've ever read!
I'm a fan of Douglas Adams (Dirk gentry series) and You Are Dead is right up there with his work. from the first pages I was smiling reading and on more than one occasion laughing so much I spilt my tea.
the story is rambling with some great explanations of science and physics which are brilliantly funny and has much to say about Mayor's, councils and even gives a nod to Blackpool.

I love this book read it you will too.

This book is very funny, with many laugh out loud moments. It offers an alternative view on how the universe is managed, and what the purpose of human beings is. The author never seems to miss an opportunity to take a humorous side swipe at many of the accepted norms in our constructed societies. The basic story is about a man who dies several times but refuses to fill out the appropriate form in the hereafter; consequently he keeps getting sent back to earth – and the many guises of the bureaucrats who appear on Earth from the hereafter trying to trick him into giving his signature. That’s just the premise for the story. However, The best part of the story and the funniest writing revolves around the man’s hometown of Dead Donkey! Where everything that is abhorrent in life is considered normal! It’s a book that perhaps makes you realise there is very little evidence for most of the things we have strong beliefs in. It is an easy read. It is silly, it is funny, but it is also A witty observation on how we might just be being conned more than we realise!

It starts well and uses humour similar to Douglas Adams in "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" - and it works, but only for a while. I found it became rather tedious at less than half way through when it became apparent that the book was being padded out by this style of humour and the chapters being padded had only a passing relevance to the storyline. It is easy to read, but sadly it is also easy to put down. Perpahs best left for a reeaaaalllly boring journey.

This book started off very well, it was quirky and entertaining. The difficulty I found was that it was dragged out for too long, which, unfortunately did become a little tedious. The whole concept is very clever, but I feel it could have done with a ruthless editor. As a shorter book it would be much better, I confess to skimming through the last third of it to reach the end. Good writing, in principle and I love the idea.

Sorry, only made it 25% of the way through this. It started off quite well, with a qwerky style that was growing on me. However we all too soon for to jokes that the author could not let go of and I left the book when I could no longer endure the beating of dead horses. Half a page of reiterating the same poor joke is not a kind of masochism I'm willing to give my time up for. I wonder if the style improves, as there are another 3 books. But, at the moment, I can't bring myself to look. Sorry.

This book starts with an interesting concept that could have been interesting (and even funny). It wasn't either of those things. It should not be compared to any of the masters of the fantasy comedy arena as it fails in serveral ways:

    1) It tries to wacky and weird without trying nake sure they work together. As mass of strange ideas do not make a good story.
    2) Repetition is not comedy (well it isn't in this book and we get a lot of that).
    3) Comedy needs characters you can relate to in some way (IMHO) and, whilst I suspect it thinks it has done exactly that with its hero, it hasn't.

It is not a 1 star as I finished the book but the main reason was I kept hoping I had missed something that would explain all the 5 star reviews and the fact there are at least 4 more books in the series. There isn't any reason I can see for either.

I actually felt the author was trolling the reader because to get through the book, the hero is brain damaged (and boy don't the readers know that fact). Maybe that was the joke.

Loved it! A bit off the wall, a bit surreal and a refreshing change from most of the books that claim to be that but aren't. I'm a big Douglas Adams fan and I'm always looking for a substitute form him. I've read all of Adam's books and now he refuses to write any more, using the flimsy excuse that he's died. So far this is as close as I've found to him.

Since I am currently evaluating some of the books I read as candidates for possible Halloween reads, for anybody who might be looking for a book of this type, I thought this might be an interesting candidate. However, I have to say that it is not. Despite the number of times the main character, Nathan Haynes, is killed and goes to the afterlife, the book is not at all scary. It’s funny. So funny, it’s almost silly. But that’s not a bad thing. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a hilarious send-up of bureaucrats and bureaucracy.

Just how many times can you die in a day? A very slapstick kind of humour with many implausible turns. But the page turns keep coming as you are drawn deeper into the fast paced tale. The best read I've had in some time!
