Pitch Black: A Romantic Thriller (Blackwood Security Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 7,983 ratings

What happens when an assassin has a nervous breakdown?

After the owner of a security company is murdered, his sharp-edged wife goes on the run. Forced to abandon everything she holds dear - her home, her friends, her job in special ops - she builds a new life for herself in England. As Ashlyn Hale, she meets Luke, a handsome local who makes her realise just how lonely she is.

Yet, even in the sleepy village of Lower Foxford, the dark side of life dogs Diamond’s trail when the unthinkable strikes. Forced out of hiding, she races against time to save those she cares about. But is it too little, too late?

Pitch Black is a romantic thriller with a morally grey heroine and plenty of dark humour. Please be aware that while one mystery is resolved in this novel, Diamond’s story continues in books two and three of the Blackwood Security series.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Elise Noble is an English rose with a few thorns who loves chocolate, sleep, and well-defined abs. Not hers, unfortunately. She lives near London with a horse who eats all her money and a dog who eats her car keys. Always an avid reader, she took up writing after inspiration struck in an old manor house and still pinches herself over the fact that people read her books.

Elise writes romantic suspense with gutsy women, protective heroes, and a healthy dose of humour.

Intrigued from the start, I really liked ‘Ash’ what a great character! Having recently lost her husband in tragic circumstances, she tries to deal with her grief by running away. However she didn’t count on meeting Luke.. Won’t say any more, but I would highly recommend this book if you like a bit of intrigue, mixed with a bit of romance, and a lot of excitement.

Wow, this book had me so hooked I stayed up until 2am to finish it and would have carried on to book 2 if I could survive with no sleep.

Diamond/Ashley has lost her husband, is threatened to stop investigating his death so disappears on her friends to try and cope with everything.

The beginning of the book is mostly about Diamond, her past life and how she got to where she is now. It's not the most interesting reading about her working in a stable, but it really does lay the foundations for the second half where things really speed up and the book becomes the page-turner I just knew it was going to be.

Ashley's relationship with Luke seems to get start getting her back on track, and then she is forced to reveal who she really is and the sweet quiet life they have created disappears.

I loved all the undercover/covert/investigation side of the book that fills the second half and all the new characters (actually friends/colleagues of Diamonds) we get introduced to has me realy looking forward to the next book.

The great books keep me up all night reading, makes me buy the next book in the series, makes me re-read them again and again. Don't you love to hate these books! How do the authors do this? One of my favourite books and my favourite author. If you love this book you are in for a great ride with a prolific author, great books and not a lot of sleep.
UPDATE: which version, clean or original. I have read both and loved both. Same story with a few changes but it doesn't matter which you read, the plot, characters are all brilliant. A good book is a good book. I do prefer the original because I am used to Emmy swearing and now it is just not her without the swear words!

Ok husband murdered and you work for a private security company doing investigation work. Not dealing with his death ash goes to the UK and rediscovers herself. A few little dramas, a bit of humor and a little romance and there you go. Was this entertaining yes, the characters and dialogue were good, I liked it but it was missing something and I really don't know what. Definitely a page turner but I think it needed some grit. Luke started out interesting but in the end if I was ash I would have done the same.
Overall it was more of a drama than a thriller. The title of the book didn't fit and perhaps it should have been called finding myself. Definitely worth a look.

Was up to 50% and almost gave up. However, it picked up then and turned out to be a reasonable novel.

Following a traumatic time, 'Ashlyn' is the re-invented result. False name, passport and with a little money, Ash flies to England where she takes a job as a groom. The brother of an owner of three horses becomes involved with her but all is not as it seems.
This brilliant well written book has a great plot which keeps one interested the entire read. Dilemna? Yep, there's plenty. Recommended reading.

What a fantastic author Elise Noble, truly can’t put down this book series. I am on book 5 and they capture you within the first few pages. They are full of action, SAS style, but it’s coupled with love, affection, emotion and each character has a great story line, gritty and wonderfully written. Recommend to anyone plus the full version has explicit love scenes but for anyone who is maybe prudish, you can buy a censored version. I however believe the full version is beautifully written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now I want to read them all.

I have only read two of Elise Noble's books "Pitch Black" being the first. I loved the storyline which was a bit over the top but written in such a way as to be credible and such fun to read. All the characters blended well in the story to the extent that I want to read more and more of their exploits. And the earthy language only enhances the story telling. Don't know that I want to read the clean version.
Being a very old person I maintain a notebook of favourite authors. Elise, you are now deservedly in the mix with Harlan Coben, John Sandford, Lee Child and Peter James.

5.0 out of 5 stars Step over to the dark side!!
Reviewed in the United States on 12 September 2016
This was my first introduction into the work of Elise Noble, the author of this exciting novel but I am now a total fan of her and Diamond, the tough-as-nails, cunning and emotionally damaged main character in this story!
I drawn into the story from the beginning...the description of the pain and loss, fear of the unknown and an unquenchable need to escape her world are universal feelings that most people have experienced at some point in their life! And it was depicted so honestly without melodramatics that I immediately was drawn to this character as though she were someone I already knew! And each character was just as fully developed and interesting as they were introduced into the storyline! And what a storyline it is!!
I thought fairly early on that I had it all figured out...and I couldn't have been more wrong! There are unexpected twists and turns all along the way! You won't see this one coming!!
Although the story didn't end with a HEA that ties everything up all nice and tidy, it ended with a good-enough-for-now that leaves the reader satisfied for the moment and hopeful for the future...and definitely anxious to read the next story in this series!!
Buy it and read it today! You will be happy you did!

Diamond receives a threat after her husband was killed and she feels she needs to escape. She leaves behind a successful security company and the only life she was comfortable with including her close relationship with her colleagues. Hiding out in the sleepy village of Lower Foxford, little does she realize that circumstances will force her out of hiding after her new boyfriend's sister is kidnapped. A great read. Suspense, action, humor, and romance all in one book!
