4.0 out of 5 stars 364 ratings

In the far future, intelligent machines resurrected the human race, then disappeared. Now humanity wages war against alien invaders, and the machines are needed once again.

After her brother is killed, Sergeant Sheemi Tanamal wants only one thing—to kill more of the enemy until they kill her, but her father has other plans. Sent into space on a long-shot mission to find their machine allies, Sheemi must navigate forces of hate and intrigue and her own thirst for revenge.

Obsessed by the machines, artist Kellen Beaudin lives a life of secrecy, hiding his drawings from an unforgiving society. Kellen’s origin is deeply intertwined with the machines, although he doesn’t understand how or why. A mysterious stranger shatters Kellen’s safe existence, stirring up echoes of the past. Recruited for a strange quest, Kellen makes an amazing discovery and embarks on a journey beyond anything he could have imagined.

In the most unlikely of places, Sheemi and Kellen will meet and change the fate of millions.

I live in Southern California with my wife and two kids. At some point, after finishing graduate school, not having any more productive way to use my time, and after reading one too many less-than-stellar science fiction novels, I decided I, too, could write one. After all, it couldn’t be that hard, could it? After writing 13 short stories (two published), two unfinished novels, and one completed novel (The Farthest City), I can attest writing of any kind, but writing well, IS hard (at least for mere mortals such as myself).

That being said, I can’t seem to stop at this point. I get to go on all kinds of adventures, visit places no one has yet explored, and meet the most interesting people. And the fact that it’s all happening in my own head makes it rather affordable, as far as adventures and vacations go.

I do most of my writing on the train to and from work, during lunch when I can step away from work, and at the library when I can escape there.

Other activities I enjoy: running, cooking, hiking, poking around in tide pools, the very occasional backpacking trip, and lately just going for a walk.

Favorite Anime and Manga:

Everything by Hayao Miyazaki, Ghost in the Shell (I), Ninja Scroll, Blue Sub 6, Neon Genesis: Evangelion, Kite, The Vision of Escaflowne, Berserk (anime and manga), Death Note, Tekkon Kinkreet, Attack on Titan, Aijin, Blade of the Immortal (manga).

I liked the duel aspect of the story plus the right amount of description for all the characters. Wondering when & how the two groups of heroes from Earth would come together kept me guessing which was a refreshing change. A satisfyingly complete story leaving you to ponder what some of the characters could do next.

I started reading this book on the plane to Menorca. It made for easy reading with good explanations of new concepts and culture. Daniel didn't spend too long introducing the main characters, I wanted to read on as soon as I'd finished the first chapter.

It was an easy read and as long as I'd finished a chapter I could pick up the story and be back with the storyline straight away, on most occasions for a dip in the pool.

I was disappointed however, that at the end of the book I didn't really know Abby, I would have liked to have spent sometime exp!oring her skills a little more. With that being said though I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would certainly read a sequel should Daniel have enough in between moments to write it.

I just didn’t get it... I mean I read it all but for me personally it had too much unsaid, and things sometimes just happened no explanation why ... not necessarily logical happenings either.
Still I stuck with it to the end so it couldn’t have been all bad.

Excellent and inventive story with good characters. The author appears to have resisted the temptation to make this book 1 of a 28 book series and therefore has written it as a complete standalone novel - makes a very welcome change!

Engaging story with some interesting ideas and characters. I struggled to understand the need for some plot mechanics and supporting characters are a little vague.

A thoroughly good read with a proper end. It leaves the door open for a further book but you feel satisfied that this story is at least complete. Wish more authors had the skill.

I found this two-threaded story a bit difficult to follow at times. It used a galactic-wide setting and some the author's ideas were quite original.

Amazing, intricate plot. Incredible imagination of the possibilities of technological evolution.
Highly recommend for Sci-Fi fans. Just sad there is no sequel :(

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and engaging story with interesting and compelling characters
Reviewed in the United States on 17 October 2016
I read A LOT of science fiction and this was a truly great book. It was very well plotted with interesting characters and an original and engaging story line that often surprised and ultimately led to a satisfying conclusion. I was actually sorry when it ended as I wanted to read more! The difference between a best selling mainstream author and an Amazon self-published author is often not the quality of the ideas or writing but rather whether a writer happens to get lucky and catch the eye of a New York publishing house or a big New York agent. I"ll take this book, for example, over most of what Cory Doctorow has written and put it on par with the earlier work of Charles Stross and above his more recent (and rather mundane) efforts. What The Farthest City lacked was legions of editors and marketers standing behind it from a huge publishing machine. It still mainly gets down to not WHAT you know but rather WHO you know and that is a crap shoot, unfortunately. This author is definitely first rate and the novel holds its own against any mainstream sci-fi bestseller and then some.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story, so-so writing
Reviewed in the United States on 2 July 2016
I found the storyline of the book rather interesting, but the book is hampered by a rather obtuse writing style. There were quite a few section that I need to reread a second time to figure out what exactly was going on - this is a book in serious need of some good editing and rewriting. The characters aren't really much to speak of. There's only two of them that we get the point-of-view from, and neither of them is particularly deep, while the rest of the cast is essentially cardboard cutouts that simply perform their plotpoints.

Still, as a scifi novel, I feel that storyline is ultimately more important than other considerations, and this book has a rather interesting tale. As such, I would still give it 4 stars, just with the warning that if you want an easy read or deep characters, look elsewhere.
