Dawn breaks at Muddiford Beach and the body of a young African man is discovered lying on the sand. Was he a desperate asylum seeker, drowned in his attempt to reach the safe shores of Britain? Or is there a more sinister explanation for his death?

Irritated to discover that the investigation will be a joint one with the neighbouring police force at Salterton CID, Detective Sergeant Kate Redman is further annoyed by her Salterton counterpart, one of the rudest young women Kate has ever encountered.

Tensions rise as the two teams investigate the case and when a second body is discovered, Kate and her colleagues are to about realise just how far people will go in the cause of doing good…

Another gem in this series.....she did use a couple of Americanisms again BUT also wrote realise so she's coming round to English spellings, I hope. It does seem peculiar to set her books here and then to always use Americanised spelling !!
I really enjoy this series of books and I intend to be sticking with them. I do hope Kate won't be taking Tin up on his offer.. He didn't really consider her much before forging on ahead after all.
This was a pretty topical subject where illegal immigrants here are mentioned. Though she did get my back up as she rued how an illegal came here and died saying...."to have survived a perilous sea crossing only to die on a beach of the country that had taken you in" which was wrong because he HAD landed in Greece, not here. This happens all the time, they don't stay where they land, which they're supposed to and therein lies THE massive issue. I agreed with Rav's opinion on this subject. She also challenged someone to name a serial killer who murdered across genders and I immediately thought of Brady and Hindley.
I REALLY liked the addition of Chloe and I hope she'll be featuring again very soon. Kate needs a regular female colleague for a change, let alone a pal. There were a couple of very touching moments in this story that gave me a sniffy pause but also the regular humour among the detectives, too.
And in this book she also spelt discernible correctly, though she did mention that hissing (as opposed to pissing) rain again !!
The only errors I spotted were one apostrophe error (Sanderby's) which was irritating as it was correct the rest of the time, turn off needed hyphenating and she lost a word from this sentence: "....she'd seen at window" and all these mistakes were right at the end of the book for some reason like the proofreader was interrupted before the end. However, this is a tremendous improvement in presentation and I was so pleased to see it and enjoy the reading experience so much.

Another excellent Kate Redman story. With each book, DS Redman becomes a more assured detective and a more rounded character. And Celina Grace becomes a more assured writer.

I like this series for: a very likeable, interesting protagonist; good plotting; good dialogue; good storytelling; British mystery in the classic tradition but with modern themes and approach; light reading.

I particularly like that the murderers are 'ordinary' people killing for 'ordinary' reasons. I have virtually abandoned US murder mysteries (and a lot of British ones too) due to their reliance on ever-more twisted serial killers who kill for ever-more twisted reasons. They are far-fetched, overly violent and psychologically uninteresting. I prefer Celina Grace's books - real people in real situations. Please, keep it like that!

The mysteries are resolved with somewhat too much reliance on Kate's intuitive leaps, but that doesn't really bother me. I don't read these books for the forensic investigation but more for the overall story that evolves across the series.

Yet another wonderful book from the amazing Celina Grace.
I am very privileged to be part of her advance reading team and I sat and read this in one sitting. I was hooked from the very first chapters and have loved seeing Kate grow as a person, becoming much more likeable she isn't the brittle tortured person of the earlier books. She is beginning to make real friends and progress in her career. The other characters are all well rounded and you are left wanting to more of their lives and loves.
The plot echoes some topical disclosures with abuse of charities and is as always very well written. I will be anxiously awaiting the next instalment.

Hm. On the one hand, this was well written: I liked the persona of Kate Redman, and I enjoyed the general procedural.

On the other hand, while the premise had promise, the whodunnit and why was 100% clear: I kept hoping for a twist to prove me wrong but alas, no.

I'll keep reading the Series when they come up at a good price (Requiem was much better) but I'm hoping for a bit more mystery next time.

another enjoyable read and very topical covering the refuge crisis that is going on at the present time. New involvement working with DS Chloe Wapping made the story more interesting and seeing a friendship develop between the two officers, but will it be carried forward in to other novels? or will Kate Redman take Tin up on his offer and go to America.

I will have to admit that I've read this book before, so having read most of the DS Redman books, I thought this was the last one I had to read... But actually, although I had previously read the book, I had forgotten the plot and story line, and also I hadn't realised the friendship between Chloe and Kate had started up, and also at the same time how it all ends with Tin. (Strangely the next out of sequence book was Kate and Tin getting together!). A great storyline and well thought out plot, with the familiar characters and colleagues of Kate all playing their part. I think I need to start again from book 1!

Although I am a member of the advance readers group, I only became one recently and so I had purchased this book prior to joining the group. Celina takes Kate Redmond to another level in this book and Kate begins to have insights into her own attitudes, particularly towards other women in the same profession. I have a feeling Kate has made a very good friend in this book, someone who thinks along the same lines as her and who, one hopes, will become a future confidant. As always Celina handles story lines with insight. sympathy and an unusual understanding for the predicament refugees might find themselves in. A thoroughly enjoyable read once again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kate Redman is back!

In "Sanctuary", the eighth book of DS Kate Redman mysteries, Celina Grace leads us into the in-depth insights of an actual tragedy: the death of a refugee. The beautiful English shores become the scene of an apparent drowning that quite soon will reveal its true nature: an homicide. This time two jurisdictions collaborate on the case: Abbeyford and Salterton CIDs will have to overcome their hostility and learn to collaborate on a compelling mystery.
Once again characters are skillfully portrayed with all the true nuances of the human being, where good and bad sometimes coexist, and clues are never neglected. Kate's personal life will experience a further evolution, her romantic relationship with her fiancé will show a sudden coup de théâtre and a new friend will unexpectedly enter Kate's life.
The smooth and intriguing narrative style of the authoress will lead the readers into an engaging and most unanticipated solution, leaving behind a sour taste given by the greed of the human soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Celina Grace has again superbly crafted an engaging and gripping novel in the 8th installment of the D.S. Kate Redmond series!
Reviewed in Canada on 15 November 2015
The descriptive yet haunting beginning with the sun, "translucent blue waters" and the waves with their foamy white tips meeting and gliding down the shoreline where a body lay face down was hauntingly tragic. A gripping start that pulled me immediately into the story, I needed to know more! Was he a homeless person, an asylum seeker or just an unfortunate victim of a random attack?
As the homicide of this unknown, young black male has occurred on the edge of the Abbysford Police Department's jurisdiction, D.S. Kate Redmond and her coworkers are forced into a joint investigation with the nearby Salterton Police Department. Kate has a particular issue with D.S. Chloe Wapping, the equivalent of Kate's own rank in the Salterton force and directed to work closely with her!
To further complicate an already tense situation, and the homicide investigation, Kate's partner Tin shows up along with a throng of other journalists and reporters forcing Kate to deal with the collision of her personal and professional life.
As always, Celina Grace has stayed current in the stage of world events with Kate and her colleagues pulled into an investigation of an issue that is resounding worldwide!
Sanctuary ends with Kate facing a major, life changing decision, I'm already awaiting the next novel!!!
Thank you Celina Grace for another excellent novel and for the opportunity to read and review as part of your advanced readers team.
I received a copy of this novel to read and give an honest review. I also purchased the novel in support of Celina Grace and her continuing work!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Another good Kate Redman mystery

Number 8 in the Kate Redman Series, a solid "Whodunit" with a likeable protagonist. This time,a corpse is washed up at the beach, and Kate has to work together with a team from the other district - which she doesn't like at all.
All is not as it seems, and as Chloe and Kate learn to work together, more and more clues are revealed.
I quite like this series, although sometimes the way Kate's past creeps up makes the story too sombre for my taste, and sometimes seems not relevant to the plot at the time.
All in all, though, a good read with an equally good narration style, and gathering of clues where the reader has at least a chance to guess who did it.
