Product description

Review

Action, romance, heartbreak, betrayal, agonising guilt and heartstopping tension: Broken Sky has it all. Oh, and fascinatingly detailed Spitfire dogfights. And delightful future-historical period detail. And TWISTS; dear Lord, the twists. And by the way, it's more than suitable for fully-grown adults as well as young ones. --Awfully Big Reviews

An adventure we couldn't stop reading... Fast paced and stylishly written, Broken Sky has us dying to pick up the rest of L.A. Weatherly's suspenseful Broken trilogy. --iBooks

An intriguing and wonderful mix of dystopian fantasy linked with disconcerting reflections of history and military, plus it's full of thrills, suspense, espionage and romance... I found myself completely immersed in this fascinating and original novel and quite simply didn't want to come up for air, I loved it and can't wait for the second in the series. --LoveReading4Kids

Broken Sky has that rarest of qualities - it feels utterly fresh and unique. --The Zoe-Trope

A book that will blow you away. --Reality's a Bore

One thing that I love about this book among a million other reasons are the characters... Amity - She's my girl. Not the typical YA heroine and that makes it even better. She's straightforward and brave. She stands up to what is right even if it means risking her life. --Beatrice Learns to Read

A gripping story with heroic characters. The scenes of aerial combat are thrilling, the whiff of corruption is chilling, but the tender romance between Amity and her beloved fellow pilot, Collie, is endearing. --Armadillo

Stunning trilogy, as someone who reads an awful lot I've been struggling through much of the new young adult fiction where books have little or no plot or are replicas of the Hunger Games. This is not like the Hunger Games - it's more like a rewrite of World War 2 in a world that is similar to what our world was like then, the exception being the history before the war is different. A lot of aspects of Nazi Germany are present in the book, with dictatorship and concentration camps featuring, and the main characters are relatable and the plot is really good. A lot of events echo World War Two as well. Only issue I had was I stayed up until midnight to read the first one and had to wait until the next day to read the second and third - couldn't put them down!

Broken sky is a fantastic book about the lives of two girls called Kay and Amity. These two girls have never met, however every thing they do has an impact on the others life. Amity is a peace fighter and Kay works for Gunnison the ruler of the central state.
This novel is a bit slow at the start but after a chapter or two this book is constantly keeping you on your toes.
If your enjoy romance, action and a little bit of politics this is the book for you. And not to mention there's two other books to come.

The first few chapters was a little slow and dull. The story picks up and my god, I could not put the book down. The story is intense, it keeps you at the edge of your seat. It's brilliant, it really messes with your feelings. I have finished the series. I had to take a break from the third book sometimes because I was either crying or mad at the author lol. It's just that good when it makes you react like that.

With so many beautiful reviews out there for this dystopian novel, I'm shocked to be writing an opinion that's less than thrilled at a measly three stars. This book has so much going for it; absolute bags of potential. But it just took such a long time to take off, and I couldn't connect with the characters (or really the plot) because of that.

Amity is a Peacefighter. This means that she can fly some pretty cool planes against an opponent equally as skilled. She could be fighting for anything. She doesn't know. But she does know that whatever it's for, it will be worth it to prevent the needless deaths caused by war and disagreements between countries.

What I really like is that this book is unlike any others I've read of this genre. It's set in the 1940s so has a really appropriate, old fashioned feel to it that makes the atmosphere of the book really unique and exciting to read about. There is no question that this author can write well, and I found myself continuing to read even through the quiet moments when the pace slowed, when I'd usually give up, because the writing flowed so wonderfully.

I think the ideas behind the book are clever and there is so much going on from the 40s setting to the astrology theories being thrown around. I really enjoyed the hint of fantasy in there. I don't want to say too much more for fear of ruining some of the concepts which are fun to discover yourself along the way.

So with so much potential and loads of great ideas, it's a surprise that this doesn't have a whopping five stars from me. But the plot is so very slow, with disjointed world building given out in tiny pieces so it never really grabbed my interest. I prefer faster plots where the reader is grappling to find out the next part. I wasn't in this case. Equally, I struggled to connect with Amity, the main character. Although she has an interesting back story, with a slow burning love interest (thank God!!), we don't really see much of her personality too often. I love figuring out characters and feeling like I just get them. With Amity, it was difficult because of how little information we have about her.

Overall a good book, with excellent writing and some really interesting ideas. I think the sequel will be fantastic, but this was more of a scene setter with a slow burn rather than an action packed adventure like the blurb led me to believe.

I read a massive amount of books every year, and YA is a genre that despite being in my 30s, I do really enjoy. But, reading so many, they can become repetitive in storylines and love triangles and general dystopian lifestyle.

Broken Sky is a new environment emerging on the market. Set in the future after a nuclear apocalypse. I would advise reading it slowly, allowing time for all the details to sink in as I began reading too fast and ultimately became a little confused with the Astrologers, Peace Fighters, and all the different terminology used in a very fascinating and creative manner to create a life time that we could feasibly see happening in years to come, but all the same terrifying in the way it mirrors dictatorship and unpredictable controlled behaviour.

Here we meet Amity, a member of the peacefighter corps, and one of their best flyers. It was in her blood to go down this road of life after her father instilling the love for the Peace Corps into her from a young age- heck, even her name, Amity, was named for peace and recovery from war. So when she discovers that the Peace Corps are corrupt, to the point of arranging murders and deliberately thrown fights, she is shaken to her core that all she lives for, breathes for, and believes in is actually not honest and true. Throw in the appearance of her childhood best friend Colie who up and left without a word despite his promises to keep in touch, and Amity finds her world well and truly thrown upside down and inside out.

The ideas behind Broken Sky are so original that they're a breath of fresh air. But as I said, do take it slowly when you're reading - it's not fast paced, but there is an awful lot of information to take in and keep in your mind as you weave through the different lives of all the characters.
