The Angels of Lovely Lane (The Lovely Lane Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 7,596 ratings

As heart-warming as it is heartbreaking, this novel is unputdownable' Sunday Express.
It is
1953 and five very different girls are arriving at the nurses' home in Lovely Lane, Liverpool, to start their training at St Angelus Hospital.

Dana has escaped from her family farm on the west coast of Ireland. Victoria is running away from a debt-ridden aristocratic background. Beth is an army brat and throws her lot in with bitchy Celia Forsyth. And Pammy has come from quite the wrong side of the tracks in Liverpool.

The world in which they now find themselves is complicated and hierarchical, with rules that must be obeyed.
Everyone has their place at St Angelus and woe betide anyone who strays from it.

But when
an unknown girl is admitted, after a botched late abortion in a backstreet kitchen, a tragedy begins to unfold which will rock the world of St Angelus to its foundations.

The Angels of Lovely Lane written by Nadine Dorries was one fantastic read which I enjoyed from page one as I was soon involved in the lives of the four girls who started their nursing career in the hospital famously known as St Angelus.
When four girls begin their training with backgrounds so far apart yet their friendships strengthened as their nursing training continued. I liked how each of the girls had their own stories to tell and the author allowed the reader to fully understand what made the girls the nurses they were meant to be.
What made this book extra special was how the Matron was showed not only as a woman who loved her hospital but a woman who could know love but was not allowed too as she loved the wrong sex, yet it did not stop her ruling the hospital better than any military army.
There were so many storylines taking place within this brilliant book which had me laughing out loud one moment yet within a page my tears poured for the suffering of the patients and medical staff as one.
For me, the main character was indeed Emily who had worked her way up through the ranks of the hospital through hard work and dedication yet she had her own heartache and as you are told her story I am sure as a reader you will understand her pain.
This is one book I know I will return too and as the series develops I know I will patiently wait for the next episode in the lives of Pammy, Victoria, Dana and of course serious Beth as this is one addictive storyline not only for brilliant storylines but mix that in with the history of medical science and the history of nursing through the 1950's this is one series I know I already dread coming to an end.

This book took me a good while to get into, it flitted between each character for a start and was a little hard to follow and set the scene for each as it flitted about so much. It took me almost halfway through this book to really get into it, that's when the story got going.
I'm afraid I couldn't help comparing it to the four streets trilogy and it just didn't grip me like that did, so that spoilt it a tad for me. Saying that once it got going it was very enjoyable and moved in quite a fast pace, found it a little strange that the story in the second half wasnt based so much around the nurses themselves but more around something that was only touched on in the first half.
Overall I felt it was worth a read and I will probably continue to read the next books in the series! Nadine Dorries tells an excellent story.

The angles of lovely lane, by Nadine Dorries. This is a brilliant story. The main character is Dana, living in Ireland, & has applied to a Liverpool Hospital, St; Angelus, to do her Nurses training, much to her father's distaste, he thinks she should stay on the farm to help & marry a local boy on the neighbouring farm. But Dana's mother wants her to get a better life, then she had. the first few chapters introduce us to the people who are associated with the Hospital, theres Victoria, student nurse, & Sister Haycock who is in charge of one of the ward's. Biddy ,the housekeeper who mother's all the student Nurses. the story tells us of all the ups & downs of being a student Nurse, & their friends, outside the Hospital, there are many surprises. It is very well righten and as i guessed by some one who had been a trained Nurse. If you like stories written around Hospital life you will not be disappointed.

I read this on the Kindle

I did find that this book has the same characters as in the Nightingale series

Nightingale series Irish girl who has a guy come over from Ireland after her Angels same but the guy is a nasty one
Posh both from titled families Local within walking distance in both books, dog who could be nasty by home nurse in one Matron in the other

That all said this ws a good book as i read the Nightingale books first i noticed the similarity but if you not read the series then this really is a good read i have even got & started on the 2nd book in this series
The other part i would say in the Nightingale series starts in 1936 & this in early 1950s you would think that it was reversed in the way they don't want the Irish or the local girl & some of the bits in it but not being a nurse & especially never researched these times not sure how acturate they are
You have a nasty Consultant who you just want to see if he gets what he deservers won't say if he does
Then you have the domestics & porters & their lifes ect
I wasn't sure when i read the first part about Emily as this starts in 1940 you then have a bit or a chapter on the other main characters so you do get to know them before they get to the hospital the ending could be better but it does really go in to book 2

Main reason for only 3 stars i do feel that she copied the backgrounds of people from the Nightingale books if you can only get one series then go for Nightingale Girls series much better

Another superb Nadine Dorries story. A heart rendering account of the changing times within the NHS post WWII. Wonderful how this close knit nursing community worked - where student nurses looked out for each other to the greatest extent which created a very strong bond. Wonderful to read about the support structure in the fact that they 'lived in' with a caring person looking out for them as well as making sure they were fed and comfortable. It also highlighted the darker side of life at that time in the disregard for progress. There was a lot more to glean from the storyline - the last 40% of the book was very hard to put down. Some very strong characters in the story. I will be looking out for the next book - the children of Lovely Lane!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compellng New Drama Series!
Reviewed in the United States on 6 January 2017
First in a new drama series from British author, Nadine Dorries,"The Angels Of Lovely Lane" is extremely well written filled with captivating characters and intriguing plot twists throughout! Haunted by her own past, Emily has overcome tragedy and climbed the nursing ranks to become the director of St, Angelus' Nursing Program only to to be met with disapproval and an unwillingness to change from long held traditions by the older staff members including the Matron herself. However, it's a new term and Emily has high hopes for her new student nurses. Dana, Victoria, Pammy, and Beth each have their own obstacles to overcome as they begin their journey into the world of nursing.

I simply love Nadine Dorries' writing style; the characters are so well-developed and her descriptions are so vivid that I immediately found myself transported to another time and place among endearing friends. The most appealing aspect however, is that Dorries has created a cast of strong female characters filled with grit and determination to succeed and to overcome any obstacle placed before them. Each story line is so compelling and intriguing that I found myself anticipating each new page; creating a wonderful reading experience. This is certainly an amazing start to a new series that I highly recommend and look forward to continuing the series!

The title sort of turned me off of this book but the story sounded good so I took a chance. Well, eat my words, I absolutely loved it. I became so attached to the characters and the author creates the atmosphere of post WWII England brilliantly. Nothing is glossed over in this book. Lots of humor too. I've read the whole series now, and have pre-ordered the Christmas book.
