Sunday Dinners: A funny, feel-good family comedy Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 2,543 ratings

A hilarious, charming and heartwarming family comedy, perfect for fans of Beth O'Leary and Mike Gayle.

Creating a happy family is one thing. Keeping it that way? That’s where the real challenge begins.

For years, the Wilde family’s Sunday roast dinners were sacred – a time for Greg, his wife Lizzy, and their three kids to come together around the table, sharing laughter, stories, and far too much gravy. It was the glue that held them together.

But now the kids are grown, Greg and Lizzy’s marriage is starting to fray at the edges, and the once-unshakable tradition of Sunday dinners is beginning to feel more like a battleground than a bonding ritual.

As each family member navigates their own struggles – love, parenthood, and identity – Greg starts to realise that maintaining a happy family is far messier than he ever imagined.

Sunday Dinners unfolds through the chaos and complications of the Wilde family’s monthly roasts. A heartfelt comedy about the highs and lows of parenthood, marriage, and the unbreakable (and hilarious) bonds of family.

I absolutely loved Sunday Dinners with the Wilde family! It is a fabulous read, all the more so because there are so many situations and feelings I can relate to - not The Retreat though, definitely not The Retreat - buy the book and you will see what I mean, hilarious LOL!

Once a month Greg Wilde cooks a Sunday dinner to ensure the whole family, Lizzy, Lucy, Matt, Hollie and Nan Joan get together and it's here we discover the complexities of thecharacters, alternated in each chapter detailing the highs and lows of what's going on in their lives. Jon is an amazing author, from a middle aged menopausal woman to a young teenage girl, Jon's writing is just superb!

Sunday Dinners is full of drama, sad times, humour and very very funny 'one liners' I laughed and cried throughout.

Please go buy the book, it's a MUST read!

I initially enjoyed this book and found it very entertaining, but unfortunately it was much too long and at the end couldn’t wait for it to be finished. It’s a real shame as it’s very well written.

The monthly Wilde family roast. Each roast and the life that happened between it and the previous family roast told by different members of the Wilde family. Dad Greg, Mum Lizzy and their 3 grown up children Lucy, Matt and Holly. The family monthly roasts also featured the lovable grandmother Joan who you could just imagine sat at the table.

Loved this book, wasn’t sure when i read the first couple of chapters but I started to fall in love with each and everyone in the family. So relatable and heartwarming. Didn’t want it to end.

The second book I’ve read by this author as I loved The Summer Holidays Survival Guide so much. This didn’t disappoint either. Jon Rance has an incredible talent at getting to people’s emotions and sharing how the characters are so believable and very fragile at times. Another hit for me and I don’t know which one to choose next from my newly discovered, favourite author.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant read about an "ordinary" family.
Reviewed in the United States on 28 February 2016
If you like stories about ordinary families, you'll like this one. "Ordinary" might not be the right word, as there is probably no such thing as an "ordinary" family, and neither are these people all that ordinary! In this book, the individual voices of the (mostly adult) children speak alternately, and so do the mum and dad. They have clear-cut characters, and although the book has no exceptional highs or lows, it is a pleasant read right to the end. I found the father of the house a little bit on the "limp" side -- no Superman, he! You might, however, recognize your own family here. Recommended as a pleasant, if not overly exciting, read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely, descriptive tale of a real family
Reviewed in the United States on 20 April 2019
This beautiful tale of the Wilde family is so authentic and wonderfully English (I'm just a jealous American now caught using more than a few British-isms each day) in its use of a monthly Sunday Roast as it's foundation. I found myself rooting for each character even with their obvious flaws and challenges, most especially in simply communicating with each other. Jon Rance is such a charming writer, so much so that I find myself wanting to introduce my family to his. Cheers to Mr Rance for this novel and the many others he has been kind enough to share with us. I'm eager to read whatever comes next from him!
  • A. Fernandez
3.0 out of 5 stars A good read but 50% cliché
Reviewed in the United States on 15 March 2016
From the very beginning the writing seemed very trite- the way the family dynamics were introduced and such. I kept reading because I thought maybe it would get better...and it did to a certain extent. There is good plot development that sometimes catches you off guard but then other times you know exactly what's coming because it's straight out of a romcom movie or something. Writing aside, it's a nice story about a family that loves each other and goes through life together and also apart. One story, different perspectives approach. It's neat to see the different family members each w their own personalities and such, yet still bonded by the familial love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book with a great scheme
Reviewed in the United States on 14 May 2018
It feels real, with a range of family issues that will feel familiar to most readers. There is a lot of love expressed, and a lot of feeling. The end of the book is sugarcoated, but most of it is more realistic. My only other complaint: too many scenes with tears running down faces!
