There's no hiding off the grid.

Joe Pickett's old friend Nate Romanowski is off the grid, lying low while the FBI search for him. But they're not the only ones looking. Meanwhile, Joe's heading south, under orders from State Governor Rulon to investigate a rash of crimes and an uptick in secretive federal activity along Interstate 80...

As they pursue their quarries, both men will be drawn deep into the Red Desert, 9,000 square miles of bleak, punishing terrain, home to a secret that could take them both down.

Books 7-12 Joe Pickett, fired from his job as a Wyoming game warden, is working on his father-in-law's ranch when he receives a visit from Governor Rulon. It's elk season in the Rockies, but this year one hunter is stalking a different kind of prey. Could Joe Pickett's foster daughter, seemingly killed six years ago, still be alive? When he'd first saddled up, Joe had thought of this as his last patrol. What he hadn't known was just how accurate that thought might turn out to be. Review

I love Joe Pickett -- Michael Connelly

Exhilarating... Gung-ho stuff' ―
Sunday Times

A real treat... The glorious wildlife and natural beauty of Wyoming come through loud and clear... I guess that after 16 books in the series, you might expect another Joe Pickett thriller to be a little tired and formulaic - but
Off the Grid is absolutely not. It is a great read for anyone who loves a really good thriller written by a master of the art' ― TripFiction

Like Box's other work [this] reflects his enthusiasms: the wild animals that make the inhospitable uplands of Wyoming their home, hawking and falcons especially, and guns. Much of this is interesting if only because on these subjects Box clearly knows what he is talking about, and his love of the desert comes through ―
Crime Review

Game Warden Joe Pickett is as interesting as ever in his sixteenth adventure... Box manages to make the wide open spaces of the bleak, stony Red Desert seem interesting' ―
Literary Review

Solid-gold A-list must-read -- Lee Child

Heart-stoppingly good ―

As usual a thoroughly enjoyable tale from this splendid series. Refreshingly non PC but based on the decency of an ordinary man these stories are well plotted and paced and are based on great characters

Well Nate is certainly back in the running in this story, literally that is. I do feel sorry for him always having to be one step in front of the government wanting to hunt him down and haul him in jail. Captured and offered a deal, again, “Do this job for us and the slate is wiped clean”. How could he refuse? Oh yep, just one condition if he gets caught he is on his own. That is some sour deal! At least he gets to work with his beloved birds of prey, he is after all a Master Falconer.

Joe too is heading for more trouble than he bargained for by the request of Governor Rulon. There are some rather delicate pieces of equipment going missing that is causing a lot of concern. Luckily there is some other activity on the area that gives Joe the perfect cover for having a snoop round. Think birds, a wild bear and some pretty bad guys that you wouldn’t want to meet anywhere, never mind in the middle of nowhere, ok Wyoming. Now Joe is all for a good hunt, with the right equipment, permits, and in the season for it. What he hates is blatant killing of wild life where a carcass if left to rot and not even the meat is eaten. So he is in for a blood boiling session but there is a much larger complication at the camp than he could have ever guessed.

It’s a wonder that I hadn’t ground my teeth to nothing by the time I finished reading this book. Thing is as a reader you are expecting things to take a turn for the worse and it just crushes me when it involves a character I have grown to love. I suppose when people are pushed into life or death situations it can bring out some surprising reactions.

Joe Pickett is a cracking character, dedicated to his job, his family and his friendship with Nate. I always feel a little homesick when each of these books end, as I long to be back in the fold of the Pickett family.

This book had everything from conspiracy theories and two people with the same dream to terrorists and political activists and much more. This was Nate and Joe at their best and worst. With the wonderful Governor Spencer Rulon doing things in his unique way.

Using contemporary threats to the nation as the basis the author has produced another enjoyable, readable novel. Being too old to explore his US I love his description of locations well off the tourist beaten track that make me wish I were younger and had the time to explore them. I like the way he brings in the hero's domestic life without smothering the reader with schmaltz.

His involvement of 'big brother' government within government is worrying if its real but nowhere near as depressing as P M Williams portrayal of the US. Well worth spending your pennies on just for the landscape and wildlife descriptions and look on the central theme as a bonus.

Off the Grid by CJ Box is another in his series featuring Joe Pickett and Nate Romanowski. If you haven't read any of Box's novels I would recommend going back to the beginning of the series starting with Open Season.

Joe Pickett is a Wyoming game and fish warden, Nate is his somewhat mysterious falconer friend who lives off the grid (hence the title) avoiding federal government who have a long running vendetta against him. This is a page turner which combines stunning descriptions of the wild country of Wyoming with a plot being hatched by a group of middle eastern terrorists (kind of popular baddies at the moment). A good holiday read.

Joe Pickett has grown older and his cases lead him from accidental murder in his home region to being some kind of special agent for Govenor Rulon - and this time he has to deal with islamic terrorism. Still, the author manages again to stay away from stereotypes and simple solutions. The overall message is Joe - his love of nature and his view of humans as part of a natural circle. Apart from that the novel is a breathtaking thriller, introducing Sheridan Pickett as a new hero and leaving enough loose threads for more stories which I can't wait to read.

The Joe Pickett series is one of my favourites and this book does not disappoint. It has all of the usual themes of the Government messing with people's lives and a little bit of woo woo. We get some quality time with Nate and Joe is his usual hapless yet incredibly effective self. I think this is the only time I have come close to liking Governor Rulon in any of the novels.

If you haven't read any of the Joe Pickett series I recommend reading them in order. The series is worth the investment of time and although all of the novels are enjoyable, some are stronger than others. The latest book is definitely one of the best. As someone who lives in Australia part of the appeal of this series is being exposed to an area of wilderness so different to the wilderness we have here. Also, the interaction with wild game and the hunting culture is such a different world and Joe's job is fascinating.

I started this series with book 14 and then immediately devoured the earlier books. Since then it has been torture waiting a year for each new novel.

Likeable and sometimes quirky characters, great story line, a bit of sleuthing, a bit of danger, a bit of adventure. I gave it a try because of the low price…how can you lose? But I enjoyed it so much, I went looking for more titles…all of which were WAY too high priced. Moral of the review… They grabbed me. I bit. Now they’re sucking me in. Lol. Hoping for more price drops.
