Review

A clever but all too believable crime thriller that's right on the money when it comes to creepy, twisted plots -- Claire Frost ― Fabulous

I loved it. It's
a brilliant, compelling read, with characters who came alive and were completely believable, as was the heart-wrenching portrayal of the anguish suffered by the parents of a missing child -- Debbie Howells, author of The Bones of You

A
tense, clever look at how quickly paradise can turn into hell. I read it in one sitting -- Erin Kelly, author of The Poison Tree

I couldn't put it down. Every single character in Gone Astray has a strong and unique emotional story to tell, and Michelle Davies manages to extract every ounce of threat from the powerful emotions of envy and greed. The relationship between DC Maggie Neville and DCI Umpire is compelling, and it's great to see an FLO take centre stage. Gone Astray is highly recommended, and I can't wait to read the next one -- Rachel Abbott

Lesley Kinnock buys a lottery ticket on the spur of the moment and she wins the jackpot. Little does Lesley realise just how much of an impact this win will have on her loved ones. Lesley, her husband Mack and their daughter Rosie, move to a mansion on the other side of town away from their friends and family. One day Lesley returns from shopping to find that Rose has disappeared and she contacts police. DC Maggie Neville is one of the two Family Liaison Officers appointed to support the family. However, Maggie has problems of her own. Lesley & DC Neville must work together to prevent a tragedy and find Rosie before it is too late.

Wowzers this is one heck of a debut novel. There is one main plot but there are several sub plots which are not complicated and which feed back into the main story.

Maggie, the lead character, is a Family Liaison Officer and she is tasked with supporting the Kinnock family. She sees this case as an opportunity to make amends for the mistake she made in a previous case and to redeem herself. She has problems in her personal life, both family and romantically. These problems threaten to affect her work. Lesley is like a fish out of water. She has won a large sum of money but she doesn’t really know what to do with it. She and her family move to a bigger house in the posh part of town but Lesley wants to be amongst familiar surroundings and feel comfortable, Mack is a businessman, who loves having this wealth and he makes sure that everybody knows about it. Mack flaunts his wealth. Mack is hiding something but it isn’t what you might think at first. Mack is also hot headed, which does not help the investigation at all.

Reading this book felt a bit as though I was on a rollercoaster ride in that there were lots of twists, turns and stomach churning moments. As the book goes on secrets and lies come tumbling out of the closet so to speak. Clues and subtle hints are given throughout the book and in a sense the reader is being drip fed highly relevant information even if the reader doesn’t realise at the time.

Michelle is very talented in that she can create and increase the sense of drama. At times, whilst reading this book my heart rate increased rapidly and I had to hold my breath on more than one occasion as I feared what was going to happen next. I totally immersed myself in this book and I really did feel as though I was ‘living’ this case as a silent witness.

I loved this book and I can’t wait to read more from this fantastic author, who deserves to go far. I wouldn’t be surprised if this series is snapped up by a television company and adapted for television. In fact I am already thinking who could play the various roles. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

The Kinnock family have recently moved from their modest estate to a mansion in an upmarket gated community after a win on the Euromillions saw them bag 15 million pounds! They are fast finding out however, especially Lesley, that money doesn’t buy happiness and she finds herself missing her old, comfortable house and friends. Her husband Mack is loving being able to show off his newfound wealth and to go off golfing whenever he wants, but is finding the constant demands and begging letters tiresome. But when Lesley returns home from shopping one afternoon to find their teenage daughter Rosie missing, they are plunged into a nightmare that brings all their fears, and a few secrets, to light.

DC Maggie Neville is assigned as one of the FLO’s to the Kinnocks, her first foray back in the role after being suspended on her last case due to a clash with her boss. Even more surprising than getting back on the job so quickly, is the fact that it was her old boss that had personally requested her. Trying to put that aside and focus on the job at hand, Maggie gets back to what she does best and sets about helping the family cope with the situation, while also trying to gather as much information from them as possible that will help the case. With an interesting family dynamic and secrets of her own to deal with, can Maggie juggle both her family and work demands without burning herself out?

This is an excellent debut novel and first book in a series. It is a fast paced story with a well executed plot and I really liked the way all the strands of the story came together. All the characters are realistic and well-developed, but especially Maggie. She comes across as a brilliant, but flawed heroine and I am really looking forward to more from her.

I'd sworn off 'whodunnits' after reading Girl On A Train and Gone Girl, both of which I found to be implausible, frustrating and boring with unbearable characters I wish had been the victims rather than the narrators. When Michelle Davies' book was recommended to me by a friend I somewhat reluctantly gave it a go, and I'm so glad I did. Her characters are flawed but not too flawed, they're believable, on the whole likeable and the story is gripping from the first page. I read it in two sittings, the first on a plane where I was so engrossed I hadn't even realised we were landing. I never once thought, 'Oh, as if!' at any point in the story and the execution of a great, original idea was not disappointing. I've just downloaded her second book and am hoping for more of the same. Highly recommended!

I found it compelling but not gripping. The build up to each character was okay. Some of the background detail, however, I found to be overdone and somewhat tedious in places. On the whole quite enjoyable.

I have really enjoyed reading this crime novel and especially like the main character, DC Maggie Neville. She is depicted in a very realistic way when she is juggling her commitment to the job as an FLO, her family troubles and inner conflict when she wants to follow her instincts whilst not disobeying orders. The story itself had a lot of surprises with expectations turned on their head. Highly recommended and I look forward to reading the other books in the series.

Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this but found myself skim reading halfway through. Gave it two stars as I may give it another shot...if I'm desperate....
