- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 September 2015I found this compellingly readable, and very moving, though it never strayed into sentimentality or anthropomorphism. I defy anyone, 'horsey' or otherwise, not to fall in love with Roma the gypsy mare. The huge and diverse cast of human characters with whom she comes into contact are sharply and tellingly drawn, the author's a natural story-teller who can give us a world, or a person, in a few well-chosen strokes. In particular the gypsy paterfamilias Bill, a chancer and a dreamer, and his daughter, a frail survivor, rise above their unpromising circumstances to grab the heartstrings. I'm not giving anything away to say that theirs is the thread that runs through the book from beginning to end. And what an end..
Such a treat to read a novel that's both fresh and perceptive but simple, not skewed towards some clever angle or modern preoccupation, but going straight to the heart of things.
Loved it, can't recommend enough.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 September 2015I couldn't remember what this book was about when I got round to reading it on my kindle... and it wasn't at all what I expected and I was delightfully surprised.
It's a very gentle and easy read about the life of a horse. Yes there are clichés but it's all forgivable by the lovely way it is written.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 May 2018Fan Flaherty is a sensitive and highly skilled author who portrays her characters with warmth, integrity and precision. Her perceptive observations of human relationships are perfectly complimented by the obvious love she has used to sketch the life of the gypsy cob, Roma. Roma becomes the lynchpin of a moving story which paints the myriad ways that a horse can affect the lives of the surrounding humans. However, it is not over-sentimental, and Flaherty is brave enough to tackle some difficult issues in both the human and animal worlds. The juxtaposition of these two worlds is at once mature and thought-provoking.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 September 2015I'm not normally one to write a review but after being told to read this book by my younger brother I thought i'd give it a go. My response to it (hence the review) was brilliant. For a first time full length novel the author has done a tremendous job on not only engaging me enough to want to read past the first 10 pages but to encourage others to read this book also! I fell in love with the story and the writing and simply could not put this down. If you're looking to indulge in something special, have a read, well worth the time and effort!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 November 2015A fabulous book. I was not sure if I would like this book after reading the preface of it but I thought I would take a gamble with it. I am so glad that I did, I know nothing of horses but I do know about human nature and it's pitfalls. The criss-crossing through the book of Roma and her keepers lives over the years, made me cry in places and smile in others. Life is complicated, life is hard but it can also be comfortable. It is a beautifully written book with warmth, integrity and a lot of love - I say no more. Read.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 September 2015I much liked Fan Flaherty's 'Trade', winner of a Guardian short story competition a few years ago. This new novel 'Sold' is a great read, with well-drawn characters in episodes (and a clever parallel narrative) linked by the fortunes of the central figure, the horse Roma. There are great moments of colour, and moments of darkness. I also liked the style of short sentences and phrases and the structure of mini chapters in the five parts of the novel – seems to me to suit the Kindle format well and made for easier reading than slabs of close text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this opportunity to sink yourself into an amazing story and some heart-stopping writing..
This is an incredible book, the writing quite extraordinary, the story powerful. It is far beyond being a "horse story", there is no anthropomorphising of Roma, it is a direct and powerful story of her life and those who were part of it. Flaherty's language is riveting, powerful, and from the first page you know you are reading something very very special. Don't miss this opportunity to sink yourself into an amazing story and some heart-stopping writing..

5.0 out of 5 stars So sad, yet full circle
Such a haunting beautiful and sad story about the life and death of a beautiful mare along with her family of origin along the way. Roma will stay on my mind and in my heart for a very long time. Beautifully written.

Once you got to know the characters, it was a nice read. One wonders if a horse remembers all its owners.
