The Music of Us: WWII love story (Still Life with Memories Book 3) Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 303 ratings

From USA Today Bestselling Author, Uvi Poznansky, comes a passionate wartime love story:

Lenny goes as far back as the moment he met Natasha during WWII, when he was a wounded warrior and she—a star, brilliant yet illusive. Natasha was a riddle to him then, and to this day, with all the changes she has gone through, she still is.

“Digging into the past, mining its moments, trying to piece them together this way and that, dusting off each memory of Natasha, of how we were, the highs and lows of the music of us, to find out where the problem may have started?”

To their son, Ben, that may seem like an exercise in futility. For Lenny, it is a necessary process of discovery, one that is as tormenting as it is delightful. He often wonders: can we ever understand, truly understand each other—soldier and musician, man and woman, one heart and another? Will we ever again dance together to the same beat? Is there a point where we may still touch?

★★★★★ “The author's own passion draws you in, makes you feel every wrench of what the characters feel. This powerful, poignant story is absolutely mesmerizing."

This is a WWII romance going back and forth between England to the US, touching upon the plight of war brides. It is a wounded warrior romance, which can be read as a standalone novel as well as part of one of family sagas best sellers. Still Life with Memories is a family saga series tinged with family saga romance, fraught with marital issues, and wrapped with a second chance at love.

Another wonderful book from Uvi Poznansky. “The Music of Us (Still Life with Memories Book 3)” is mesmerizing. The author tells stories in a beautiful style that is both lyrical and poetic, a style that makes it a pleasure to read her books. Reading Poznansky is like entering a dream, a very real dream – colorful, imaginative and flowing. Highly recommended. Five stars.

Words can be melodic, and author Uvi Poznansky’s book at times reads like a symphony. This is the music of love, elegantly written with an essence of bittersweet romance. It is a celebration of the wonderful feelings people experience during the early days of getting to know each other, written in the heartbreak and shadows of later years.

The book does end abruptly, with the specter of uncertainty hovering above Lenny and Natasha as they deal with the possibility of her illness (this is revealed in the beginning of the story). I am not a fan of continued stories, but I must add that the author’s focus was on the story of the pair’s romance before marriage. As Ms. Poznansky successfully described that period in full, this book should be regarded as complete.

As a warning to those who read this book and wish to read the next offering, stop reading when you reach the words “Continued with Dancing With Air, Volume IV of Still Life With Memories.” If you read further, you will find spoilers that will reveal information about the previous as well as the upcoming books.

Though this is not a genre I usually read, I was captivated by the excellence of the prose and the presentation of the story. While a romance novel, there is no in-your-face sex or objectionable language to get in the way of what is a wonderful story relating the growth of love between two people. Five stars.

This book goes hand in hand with the author's "My own Voice" and the two work very well as a set.
The core of the story is Lenny's marriage to his second wife, Anita, a much younger version of his ex-wife Natasha, who has early onset Alzheimers.
The narrative aided by letters brings new revelations and peel further layers of the family. The author also uses tape recordings in the book, making this a very accomplished piece of story telling. While I don't often like 'clever' or constructed plot devices, here it works extremely well.
The author has a unique sharp and poignant writing style and with the change of perspectives she gives the characters further depth. Great writing, a fascinating premise and wonderful insight in human nature make this a read very worth your time

As always, Uvi doesn’t disappoint. In this brilliant painting Uvi skilfully depicts rich historical facts and engaging characters of well studied 1940s where we learn about fascinating WWII military servicemen, get insights into the sufferings of the civilians, observe the intriguing lives of artists and musicians, and compare the technology of things. All the while Uvi outlines the psychology of why people do what they do without judging.

With deep understanding of human nature and keen observation on how people interact Uvi shows the turmoils that moves protagonist Lenny to stray from his beloved even when in the beginning true love rules and in the end family values never cease to exist. Uvi teaches us about Alzheimer: what it does, what it changes, how it begins.

Fun, captivating, wise. After reading this, because of Uvi, we sure won’t be too quick to blame others and will instead think of the reason behind their actions. And if you’re a writer, remember Uvi’s excellent writing tips!

While reading The Music of Us: A WWII Story, written by Uvi Poznansky, I couldn’t help but wonder if Beethoven’s’ Fifth was the muse that fostered the love between Lenny and his Natasha, the piano player extraordinaire. Will the pianist who learned the beauty of classical music from her deceased father who fears she'll develop Early Onset Alzheimer’s as he did suffer from it, too? Wonder also if the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy would overshadow her number?

Despite that, did she perform her best when a young man steps out of the venue’s line and heads backstage out of avid curiosity?

Yes. Hence came God Bless America, but I digress.

I adore how Ms. Poznansky constructs such alluring sentences and how so many of them stand out in this incredibly captivating story – Oh! One quote that has stayed with me is, “The memory is a liar.” Shared by the character Natasha as she confides her grief and fears regarding her own future to Lenny, a young man who’s in the military and just happened to be on the stage clowning around as he recovers from a wound, initially hoping to see Betty Grable, and that’s where I stop – you know, to avoid those inevitable spoilers….

This story unfolds in two points of view – Lenny’s and Natasha’s, plus also including Lenny’s recounting of dialogue spoken from Natasha, as he viewed it, and the driving force, in my humble opinion, of much of the story.

An example: When Lenny is overseas, he’s going through a rough patch – you’ll have to read the story to find out what it is, but - the situation worsens, and he asks to be granted emergency leave to return home. His commanding officers approve it, provided he accepts a mission of a highly respected nature, not to mention emotional import. The emotional portion of the sequences had me in tears because that’s how I respond to exceptional writing. Maybe the scene sparked a personal memory, which reading a story by any outstanding author is wont to do, because of the way the words are presented and give rise to the touching factors when a reader is deeply invested in such a poignant read.

Meanwhile, a reunion is in the works while Lenny is home dealing with his sad circumstances - to his amazement, and mine, too. Although this part of the story is fraught with misunderstanding and bumbling errors that could conceivably sabotage the budding romance with his pianist Natasha, true love does run smooth, if only temporarily, and that’s all I will say about that – because the war continues on, and Lenny has to return to it… this is where I zip it. Read the book, you know you want to.

There were also sweet lessons to be learned in this story, too, and gentle reminders. Natasha taught me about ‘spirals’, a cool but practical way to arrange flowers in a vase. Lenny, while out on his first date with Natasha, jogged my memory of the pleasures of creamy tomato soup with cheddar toast until, groaning with hunger pangs, I made the food, and continued to read.

These two characters were innocent souls beginning love’s journey at a time before I was born – so through the author’s prose, I was able to visualize the streets of New York, the orchestra seats at Carnegie Hall, the town of London after it was bombed, and Scotland where Lenny learned how to become a soldier.

As the notes of The Music of Us drew to a close, I realized the journey of Natasha and Lenny had only begun in this tale, and because this sweet, realistic, and engaging tale had already etched a place in my heart, it is only fair I get acquainted with these characters, their son Ben, and perhaps Natasha’s father because I’ve become smitten and need to learn more. There are more stories in this series to be enjoyed.

Five golden stars awarded to Ms. Poznansky, for moving me to tears, increasing my respectful admiration of an author I’ve always enjoyed reading, and for allowing me to savor every phrase she used to move this story, ones I privately wished I’d thought of for myself. Bravo!

If you've ever read anything by Uvi Poznansky before now, you'd be familiar with her wisdom and often precise insight. If not, you will learn that this author has a mesmerizing talent in both her novels, blogs, interviews and articles, for observing the intricacies of life and human motivation and is able to deliver these in the most gripping of ways. The Music of Us (Still Life with Memories Book 3) is no exception. I found this to be a beautiful masterpiece of chapters, which draws the reader into a tapestry of history, war, love and a new understanding of the human spirit. For those who have not read books 1 & 2, I would recommend doing so, but if you've stumbled upon The Music of Us first, it will be of no consequence. This read, with its fascinating array of historical factors, music, art and a detailed view of Alzheimer, is so enthralling in its detail that it will more than satisfy. Yet, it isn't just Poznansky's devotion and captivating observation that is a thrilling experience, it is likewise her unique artistry of words. She captures the reader with flowing beauty. I felt the life and atmosphere of the 1940's, and was so absorbed in the story, a likewise yearning for a time I never knew. This novel will truly move you, take you into Uvi's realm. Her words unfurl like silk and touch the reader on a deep level. Highly, highly recommended.
