Marked: A Shadows in the Dark Novel Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 953 ratings

My jealous boyfriend was in town. After a playdate, he left the room. His phone started going off repeatedly. It seemed important, so I grabbed it.

It was his wife, giving him a pregnancy announcement.

I may date men with money, but I’m not that kind of girl. I had no idea he was married, and we’ve been dating for months. I haven’t felt that degraded since my mom pimped me out to her dealer to cover her debt. I’m not the one to be played.

So when my bestie begged me to get a tattoo with her, I agreed. This hot guy offered to do mine. I had no idea if he was even truly an artist since he was a client when we got there. I didn’t care. I was out for vengeance, so I let him give me a tattoo of his choice.

I never expected him to make it dirty, right there in the chair. I’ll give my ex something to be jealous of. I have options.

Little did I know, that guy was an ex cop turned assassin, and he’s not letting me go.

Note from the author: This is a dark, standalone romance that may contain some psychological or emotional triggers. Please read with caution.

I found books when I was going through a hard time in life. They became my means of escape when things got bad. I realized quickly how much I loved to take a backseat to someone else's life and watch the journey unfold. That began my journey with books in November of 2012. I constantly had a book open on my Kindle app. Never in a million years would I have imagined myself as a writer, because I never thought I was creative enough. I'm living proof that things will fall into place when they're meant to be. People will make their way into our lives when we don't expect it, setting the path for what we are meant to do. Never give up on people. Never stop taking a chance on others. Someone took a chance on trusting me with her work when she didn't know me from a stranger on the street and gave me the opportunity of a lifetime as our relationship progressed, which led me to editing and writing as well. This is my dream I never knew I had. As soon as I sat down and gave writing a shot, it was like the floodgates opened. Now, I am lost in a world of fiction in my head, new characters constantly screaming for their stories to be told. Continue to dream and to go for them. No one ever found happiness by sitting on the sidelines. Sometimes we have to take risks and put ourselves out there. Thank you for all of your support, and may there be many books to come. XOXO- C

OMG this book had a little bit of everything in. Two people having similar childhoods but one gets a break and the other is still fighting . Kaston lives to lives one of good and one of dad doing good. Lux lives life in a routine that helps her cope with her childhood. But a chance meeting sets a ball in motion. There is plenty of spice to this book now off to read book 2

Reviewing on behalf of Relentless book chics ramblings and reviews

Kaston Cox isn’t a typical book boyfriend, he’s dark and mysterious and has many demons he’s had to face throughout his life. As an adult, he’s a criminal’s worst nightmare. He puts right the wrongs inflicted on innocent people by being a hired hitman and ridding the world of evil. His father taught him everything he knows and there was always one rule: never allow emotions to form. Numb and heartless are the only two ways to live. He never had an issue following that, until now.

Lux Larsen is a woman who knows exactly what she wants and she seduces men to get it. She loves sex and is good at it so uses it to her full advantage gaining designer labels, cars and other luxuries. She’s definitely not ashamed and doesn’t believe in double standards, men have been doing it for years. Lux doesn’t believe in love, it’s for weak minded people and weak is definitely not something she is.

When Kaston and Lux meet, neither of them realises how much their lives are going to change. Sometimes when you least expect it, fate comes along and throws you into a situation and what happens as a result is beyond your control. Late one night, Lux witnesses something she shouldn’t and becomes “marked’’ so she gives Kaston 2 options.

I loved the relationship between Kaston and Lux and there were enough twists in the book to keep you guessing and wanting to turn the page to find out what happened next. This was the first book I’ve read by Clarisse and I’ll definitely be reading more of her work, I’m looking forward to shadows in the dark #2.

5.0 out of 5 stars and it’s one of the best I’ve read in a while
Reviewed in the United States on 22 April 2016
First of all, if this is on your TBR list, bump it to the top NOW! I waited far too long to read this book, and it’s one of the best I’ve read in a while. I’m contemplating 5 stars, which is rare for me because that would mean this book is one of the best I’ve ever read. That’s quite a commitment, as is this read. This is a full-length, dark and sexually charged story with devastating situations, psychological triggers, a sweet tinge of madness, and compelling characters that are not going to be far from me for a long time. Do not take this read lightly. Settle in, savor it, and let yourself feel it. Too much? Then go find a romantic comedy. Kaston and Lux have needs and your full attention is one of them, they deserve it. If you want to know what the story is about, read the full synopsis. Lux and Kaston are both damaged at the core of their being and had two very different paths to finding each other. At the risk of sounding dramatic, their darkness’ finds each other randomly and recognize each other as a need instantly. Their hearts are what struggle to accept it. Both characters have their individual stories given full attention by the author prior to being together, and while it makes for a longer beginning to their story, it was so well done that you realize how necessary it was. It gives you a connection to each of them. It’s long, but not frivolous. I see that readers who did not like this read, either didn’t get far before they made up their mind or their reviews showed a lack of comprehension of the story. Basically, they just didn’t get it. Stories this good take time, and Charisse Spiers obviously put a lot of time into this. It gave you a chance to understand them, therefore, care about them. Nothing is sugar coated; Lux and Kaston are beyond rough around the edges. The profanity, the sex, and the darkness were all a part of their reality. You have to be willing to go there with them and the reward is amazing. There are a lot of layers here with what Lux and Kaston each have to go through. Again, these are damaged people, and for love to conquer all, it is a process. I’m not even sure who was more “Alpha”! I laughed out loud, but worse than that, I cried (Damn you Charisse Speirs!), on more than one occasion. I don’t cry. I’m not a crier. And yet, ½ a box of Kleenex later, I’m grinning like a damn Cheshire Cat. Bring on Kross and Delta, I dare you! And thank you. This book was amazing. Ok, 5 stars it is.

Es war eine gute Geschichte mit interessanten Charakteren und einem spannenden Verlauf. Es hat Spaß gemacht, das Buch zu lesen. Zeitweise war es aber wirklich zu dramatisch und theatralisch geschrieben.

    3.0 out of 5 stars I didn't enjoy it. 2.5 stars
Reviewed in Australia on 25 February 2019
Ok. Bottom line, I didn't like it. So many times I just wanted to quit reading but I am stubborn and there occasionally would be moments to peak my interest.

    So the why.
There were so many words - I know, kind of neccessary but sometimes less is more. There were so many explainations, declarations, speeches and inner monologues that were repetative or could have been more direct and succint. Sometimes their thoughts and conversations were so complex, I was left thinking - what? What are you actually saying?
Also the sex scenes. Don't get me wrong, I like a steamy scene like any other woman and there were some creative moments but it also filled around 75% of the book, making it drag on forever and feel like it wasn't ever going to get to the point. Sometime a stories progression is more important than the never ending chemistry or explaining everything to death over and over and over. It really did take me a long time to finish this book. I didn't find Lux and Kaston likable either which didn't help.

I can appreciate what the author was trying to convey (thats why I'm giving a generous rating) but the execution was lacking.
